Summary: When Do Hippos Play? is a rhyming book by Daniel Errico. This is a very short and simple story that walks readers through a day in the life of a hippo. After the rhinos and elephants have gone to bed, the hippos begin to play. They float in the water, they eat the grass by the river, and they dry off their bodies. Once the sun begins to come up again, the hippos go to bed while the rhinos and elephants are waking up. The story ends leaving the rhinos and elephants wondering what the hippos do at night while they are asleep.
Analysis: I thought this was a cute book but did not offer much of a plot. The author did a great job rhyming the last word in each sentence, but some parts seemed a little repetitive. However, I do think this would make a good book for children who are just beginning to learn to read and rhyme. The author gives examples of more complex rhyming words rather than the simple 3-letter words that are often taught when first teaching how to rhyme. This helps kids learn to expand their rhyming skills into longer and more complex words.
How I would use it: I would use this book for language therapy. I would definitely use it to teach rhyming skills to young children who struggle in that area. This book would also be great for phonological awareness and could be useful to use in therapy while clients are also learning phonological awareness in the classroom.
This book was a very cute read. Kids would love this book as it rhymes throughout and tells a sweet story about what Hippos do at night, I really enjoyed the illustration in this as well. They appear to have a style that looks like it was made with crayons or colored pencils which I am sure kids would love and relate too. Overall it was a cute book and very simple, younger kids would love it.
This book was all about how the hippos played at night. I thought the illustrations were really cute and it had bright colors. I just didn't really think it had a lesson in it so I probably wouldn't prioritize adding this to my classroom in the future.
