Thank you, Thread Books, for the advance reading copy.

I would say this is more of a memoir than a self help guide. The author describes his life and his experiences so far on what him resilient today.

References in the writing have medical terms with some background explanations on the same. However they are short and written in such a way that anybody can read the book, gain something good out of it.

If you pick up this book, I feel you would gain more from this section on “The Five Pillars of Mental Resilience”. It benefits me the most when I read the book.

I appreciate the fact that the author focuses on important parts that build us as social beings: on building confidence, building connections, discussion on emotional intelligence, relationships and physical health.

Also, try to think and analyse about the “MIND” method in the book. It helps.

If you are particularly down and looking for a quick lift-me-up, then go for the second half of the book. It works like magic for me!

This is such a good, short uplifting read. Totally recommended.

Think Yourself Resilient focuses on how to let us turn surviving into thriving. The book is written through the author's observation and practice, from his professional and personal life.

We pursue greatness and face tragedies every day and we have to have faith in our abilities to handle these situations. Resilience is the emotional robustness to succeed when there are many inevitable and obvious reasons to quit. Resilience is working towards any goal, it is courage, endurance, and adversity.

James Elliott introduces a model called the Five Pillars of Mental Resilience, which is the idea that an individual’s mental resilience is supported by five key building blocks:

- confidence,

- emotional intelligence,

- physical health,

- goals,

- and relationships.

Each of those chapters contains a detailed plan on how to develop each pillar to maximize our mental resilience using the MIND method,

A very useful guide to achieving the understanding that we can undo or unlearn whatever blocks us. We cannot perform beyond our own level of self-worth and self-esteem. We really can learn how to build mental resilience.

I really enjoyed this book, which is written and narrated by James Elliot. James tells us about his life story, and what it was like to grow up with abuse, and then break free from it to create a powerful and inspiring life for himself.

He then gives us tips and techniques on how we too can improve our life. He shows us how we can cope more easily with stress and fear, how we can deal with obstacles in our life, how we can build confidence, how we can improve our health and emotional responses, as well as how we can reach our goals and build healthy relationships.

I found this book really interesting, useful and inspiring. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author/narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

A fantastic book. I listened to the audiobook version which is read by the Author. What an amazing life journey he has led and still lives shared here. What I loved is none of it is sugar coated. He shares the real lows, the scary times, the times he failed along with highs and success. His admirable record in teaching resilience to various police forces, the NHS and even political parties is incredible. Resilience is needed everywhere from our own life to those in positions of great responsibility.

Whilst many years were spent in the armed forces this is not a book about war stories or disasters. James makes that really clear. Inspired to learn about sports psychology and seeing how the way athletes learn resilience especially in the mind can be effective for anyone when applied. There is no psychological babble here, it’s easy language and stories anyone can relate to, no matter where you are in life. He shares much from his life so it does have a memoir vibe but it appealed to me even more.

I found this really inspiring and can definitely take away messages from this to apply to my own life. A lot of “self-help” books leave you wondering why you bothered but this is a cut above. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to improve their life even in a small way. There is something in here for everyone. 4 solid stars!

Many thanks to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for my review copy. All opinions are my own.

**Listened to the audio book**

Always looking for self-help books and non-fiction books on the topic of resilience.
I was left really disappointed with this book.
It's sold as self help - but its more of a memoir with a bit of self-help thrown in.

I wasn't really interested in James Elliott's personal story, and wanted help and ideas on the topic of resilience. This book DOESN'T do what it says on the tin.

The only plus side of this book was that the narrator of the audio book was the books author - which is always a good shout in my opinion.

✨Audiobook RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨REVIEW: Thank you to @threadbooks and @netgalley for my advanced eCopy! This was my first self-help style book and boy did it open my eyes!! James Elliot had a great way of putting things through his personal experiences and even relating to the medical/science side behind your brain and body responses. He explains his guide to mental resilience within 5 pillars and each chapter focuses on one. I really enjoyed that the author was the narrator of the audiobook and it helped explain the story quite a bit. However, if you don’t have a lot of time dedicated (ie only want to listen 15-30 min/day) I recommend either taking notes or doing the physical book. The only reason I knocked my rating down one star was because the chapters were long and no true “breaking points” making it hard to just pickup for a few while traveling to point B. On the other hand, I really enjoyed listening to his perspective versus reading because I could close my eyes and think through my own experience. This book made me truly think about my frame of mind and how I personally will make changes.

✨PROS: GREAT information and really helped shift my mindset

🚨WARNING: Potential triggers include looking at your current state, behaviors, and relationships.

I liked how the author links is own personal stories, to explain the science behind what he is talking about. This made it more enjoyable to read, as it was more real. The book has a lot of detail & is helpful.
I've read a lot of similar type of books and this one was a good one.
The section on physical fitness was also interesting and linked in well with the rest of the book.
Thanks to the publisher & Netgalley for an advanced copy.

I’m going through a bit of a self discovery drive in my reading and so this book claiming to help me think myself resilient appealed immediately.

Part memoir part motivational speech Elliott provides his practical advice based upon personal experiences and those he’s helped build up their mental resilience. I found the addition of his personal experiences to be incredibly effective in providing context and authenticity to his writing.

I don’t feel there is anything revolutionary in his concepts but it is delivered without pretence in a simple down to earth manner. I listened to the audiobook which Elliott in his friendly and approachable northern accent added to the accessibility of his words.

There are some real points of reflection I experienced whilst listening and the exercises were simple, not elaborate and easily applicable in a busy life style. There’s a few I have adopted since listening.

Finally I feel (although as a woman would not like to assume) but the fact that Elliott as a former military man discussing this topic can only help reduce the stigma and make it more acceptable for men to discuss their mental struggles.

1. This reads more like a memoir than a book on resilience and that’s definitely not what I expected when I picked this up.

2. This book offers nothing new on resilience but if your goal is to learn about this author’s life then this might be the book for you.

Gostei de puder ler sobre técnicas de como melhorar a resiliência mental e como a própria história do autor se desenvolveu por isso.
