This book presents a critical examination of Machiavelli's thought, combining an accessible, historically-informed account of his work with a reassessment of his central ideas and arguments. Viroli challenges the accepted interpretations of Machiavelli's work, insisting that his republicanism was based not on a commitment to virtue, greatness, and expansion, but to the ideal of civic life protected by the shield of fair laws. His detailed study of how Machiavelli composed The Prince offers a number of new interpretations and he further contends that the most challenging--and underestimated--aspect of Machiavelli's thought is his philosophy of life, in particular his conceptions of love, women, irony, God, and the human condition.

Maurizio Viroli is Professor Emeritus of Politics at Princeton University, Professor of Government at the University of Texas (Austin) and Professor of Political Communication at the University of Italian Switzerland (Lugano).

Um dos melhores trabalhos que li sobre o florentino. Viroli consegue mesclar com fluidez as obras políticas de Maquiavel, com suas cartas enviadas aos amigos, colegas de trabalho, e suas outras obras menos conhecidas, como os discursos realizados em sua época de Secretário de Chancelaria, constituindo uma narrativa fluida e concisa.

O principal tema de análise é a "filiação" de Maquiavel à tradição retórica romana. Neste ponto se encontra a quebra que o autor florentino faz com a tradição humanista de seu tempo. Nesta perspectiva, o autor nunca teve pretensão de escrever obras históricas, políticas nem filosóficas. Sua única vontade era de alcançar a fama e a notoriedade nas artes da persuasão, e no aconselhamento dos líderes de um país. O príncipe, longe de ser um tratado político, é apenas um compêndio que resgata a retórica dos antigos, trazendo para o seu tempo (e agora para nós, na posteridade) os ecos dos grandes discursos dos homens públicos da maior República já fundada, Roma. Os Discursos e a História de Florença, são a mais nítida exortação patriota, e a declaração e amor à Terra Natal.

I thought it was okay. Certainly didn't need that much backstory on some parts. Besides that, it's not that special, because it explains stuff that we know mostly.

Also I was kind of under-informed on many terms that made me feel like I don't know English, so that's on me.

Excellent as introduction to Machiavelli, especially if one is too lazy to read him herself. Consequently, it gets a bit tedious for somebody who is acquainted to Machiavelli's oeuvre.
