What if one thing could change everything? “I’m overwhelmed by debt. I need to be more intentional about my spending—and start saving.” What one thing could you do today to start recovering financially? “I want to go after my dream, but I’m terrified I don’t have what it takes. What if I fail?” What one thing could you do today to begin developing your confidence? “My spouse is preoccupied and distant most of the time, and I’m starting to resent it.” What one thing could you begin doing today to improve your relationship? We all have things in our lives we want to improve. The problem is, they’re such big things that we start to get overwhelmed and then we feel discouraged and... well, then we give up. Sometimes we don’t even try. In The Power of One Thing, Intentional Living coach, family counselor, and radio host Dr. Randy Carlson will tell you how to achieve a better life—starting today—by harnessing the power of focusing on just one thing that will move you toward your goals. Approachable and easy, this plan will give you a feeling of accomplishment and hope, inspiring you to keep taking small steps toward where you want to be. The result? A series of “one things,” lived intentionally over time, will help you overcome significant challenges, achieve even your biggest dreams, and build new healthy habits for your life.
I really enjoyed reading this book - it’s about intentional living which is my thing ☺️ - he challenges our thinking in many ways, but One Thing at a time.
Paralyzed. Overwhelmed. Confused. Stuck. Sometimes getting started is harder than the journey itself. Dr. Randy Carlson has a solution.
Do ‘One Thing’.
Choose just ONE THING and do it well. That’s it. That’s all it takes to start.
One Thing.
In The Power of One Thing, How to Intentionally Change Your Life, Dr. Carlson systematically goes through nine different life areas, coaching on how to choose and change that ‘one thing’ that holds you back from living the life God desires for you. Is it your attitude? Emotions? Words? Decisions? Dr. Carlson will help you find your way.
He even has a chapter titled, ‘The Power of One Thing to Unclutter Your Life’. Hands down our favorite chapter. No shock there!
I think the reason this book resonated so deeply with me is Dr. Carlon’s commitment to get you moving! To encourage you to take action. Taking action is the heart of Action Plan Ministries, and as we’ve said before, “A good idea will remain only that, just a good idea, unless you put action behind it!”
I love action. It's the only effective means to change.
And I love that Dr. Carlson promotes healthy, intentional, positive, life-changing action.
Dr. Carlson says, “Living a better life is easier than you think! Instead of making big resolutions that quickly overwhelm you, The Power of One Thing invites you to begin moving toward change one daily, intentional step at a time. You’ll learn how to figure out which positive change can make the biggest payoff in your life; you’ll get practical tips from those who have already benefited from this plan; and you’ll see how your one thing, lived intentionally over time, will help you to achieve the dreams you’d almost given up on.”

This is definitely a very challenging book...but in a good way. You should see my copy, it is tabbed and highlighted. I even went through and pulled out some quotes I really liked and posted them above my computer as motivation! I finished this book in a couple of days, but it will be a book that I keep on my bookshelf and will most definitely come back to it time and time again as a reference. I love how Carlson points out that the easiest way to make a change in your life is to do one small thing at a time (e.g. if you want to un-clutter your house, don't set out to clean the closets, attic and garage in one day...start with one office drawer today and do a little more tomorrow and so forth). In Part One he addresses the concept of "One Small Thing" and gets you to think about what area you want to change. In Part Two he breaks it up into 9 chapters and overs a different area in each chapter (e.g. Attitude, Words, Decision, Emotions, etc.). I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to change anything in their life and have been unsuccessful up till now; whether it be weight-loss, martial problems, clutter, or disobedient children.
