An ordinary, stable, middle-class family is thrown into turmoil by the tragic death of the youngest daughter in an accident, as family members struggle with unimaginable loss and learn to how to cope, grow, share, and grieve once again. A first novel. Tour.
The title page of this book says it was published in 1996. I know that was 30 years ago, but this book felt very dated and probably would have back then too. Feels like it was written by an elderly person trying to address contemporary issues, even for back then. The author did look elderly on the back cover. I guess that’s why the main mother character came across as much older than she was, more like somebody in their 60s or 70s than a woman with high school and college age kids probably in her 40s. It was a fast read when I had time to get into it, but I came away from it not really caring for any of these characters including and maybe especially the deceased daughter.
A sad premise, the loss of a daughter and how it affects the family dynamics, each member. I found it hard to get in to. I never felt connected to the characters and it didn’t make me cry. The author never let me inside, I felt I was just perusing in the edges.
