Comic Book Artist. He studied pre-medicine at the University of Tennessee, and then moved to Aspen, Colorado, and later San Diego, where he taught martial arts, became an award winning water skier, and began drawing comic books. In 1994, he was hired by Top Cow Productions in Century City, California, where he was the co-creator of "Witchblade", a comic about a voluptuous female detective who fights evil with the aid of a mystical weapon that attaches itself to her arm and gives her superpowers. Turner later founded Aspen MLT, a Santa Monica publishing company that created online comic adaptations for the NBC television series "Heroes" and titles including "Fathom", a deep-sea story about a female superhero. He was also a regular cover artist for "Superman/Batman" and "The Flash". Turner's work was in demand for special editions and similar projects, and he drew covers for DC Comics' "Justice League" and Marvel's "Civil War". The milestone 500th issue of "Uncanny X-Men", released in July, 2008, featured one of Turner's special edition covers. He died of complications from chondrosarcoma, a form of bone cancer he had begun treatment for in 2000.
Exotic, locations, addictive adventures, absolutely gorgeous artwork with a great, super-strong female character. This massive, action-packed compendium is one of the pride and joys of my bookshelf collection.
A guilty pleasure? Perhaps, but like "Supergirl" it is one I relish, and the story-lines are imaginative and engaging. But it is the visuals that truly shine here. Like the early "Witchblade" run, this is the Top Cow style at its artistic peak.
"Tomb Raider" has very recently moved to Dark Horse and began a new run. I have not checked it out yet, mainly out of fear the new approach will lack the exhilarating buzz of the Top Cow run.
Bottom line, if you like "Indiana Jones" type adventures and James Rollins novels, the "Tomb Raider" Top Cow run is a bundle of four color crack joy you will love.
This was my favorite of the Top Cow Compendium volumes, which collects Tomb Raider issues 1-50 of the first comic series.
The art was off the charts sexy as you'd expect. I personally enjoyed the more down to Earth stories which featured Lara Croft as a hot female Indiana Jones rather than the more outlandish stories dealing with Time Travel and Lara coming back from the dead by way of a weird Egyptian mummy god.
Overall this was a solid entertaining read, and fans of the character should enjoy it.
The iconic heroine Lara Croft presented in full throughout these 50 issues. Good stories and turning points, depicting the same universe from the videogames. The final issue and ending sums up very good what this comic/story is all about. It took some time to read it all, but did it in a methodical way. Also, good inks and graphics.
3.5 - 4 stars Strong start , Lara charismatic as ever, Chase Carver an awesome character. The decline came as expected in the middle, some arcs were so weak in plot ans stupid that I struggled reading. Alternating issues from good to bad all the way through. The late issues were intriguing enough to make me pick the compendium and finish it after a looooong hiatus.... I'm particualrly fond of issue #50 which was an awesome conclusion. Debating over if I should read TR Journeys, but I will once I have the time. In conclusion, The classic beats the new! I miss the old Lara so much it hurts! :)
This compendium is a beast of adventures for everyone’s favourite Tomb Raider - Lara Croft. Over 50 issues, several big name artists and writers Lara’s adventures range from bombastic and a little cheesy to outright terrible. It’s to be expected that an long on-going series has dips but the rate that the Tomb Raider comics fall is sad. The first 20 or so issues are drawn by Andy Park (with some fill ins) and Andy continuously does justice to Lara with him drawing her as most realistic and never overtly sexualised. Once the art changes to Tony Daniel Lara is drawn like she has terrible fake breasts and often in clothes that go beyond skimpy. Yes, a huge part of Tomb Raider was Lara’s sexual appeal but to draw her so continuously wearing next to nothing stops being sexy and becomes silly and distracting. There are scenes wherein Lara is fighting for her life but the art depicts her doing this with either an extreme amount of side/ under boob or constantly in her pants. It’s a bit creepy. Overall these are fun comics that play with the character quite well and are a good way to get adventures with Lara outside of the games/ movies.
The original Tomb Raider video games (1 up to angel of darkness) will always be my favorites. And this collection captures that essence in a way that the Angelina Jolie movies could not, though that's admittedly not saying much.
