Then one monumental day he stumbled into what he now believes is the career he was made for and, in turn, the life he was meant to live. The Power-Based Life was developed out of Mike’s desire to help others discover who God created them to be and, consequently, the work they were designed to do. But what exactly is a power base? As Mike explains through heartfelt personal accounts, notable sports stories, and biblical references, a power base is the center of personal strength used to meet challenges that, once discovered and maximized, will lead to a more significant, satisfying, and successful life. He offers twelve strategies designed to tap into your specific points of personal strength, such as Cultivate a Winning Attitude, Defy the Skeptics, and Practice Radical Mercy. These principles empower you to rise above life’s challenges and identify and embrace your goals and dreams. Find true meaning in your work and how you can impact the world by strengthening your body, mind, and spirit.

The Power-Based Life: Realize Your Life's Goals and Dreams by Strengthening Your Body, Mind, and Spirit

The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt

I was pleasantly surprised by this book.  I expected it to be a boring, self-help book with a lot of mumbo-jumbo about how you can attain any goal by just thinking about it.  But it wasn't!

It is an engaging read, full of real-life examples.  It's well written and keeps your attention.  The book is subtitled: Realize your life's goals and dreams by strengthening your body, mind and spirit.  Mike Flynt knows a lot about realizing life goals.  At age 59, he went back to play his senior year of football at his collegiate alma mater.  Almost 40 years before he had been expelled from the very same school for fighting and never got to complete his football career there.  Now he has.  It took a lot of power - mentally, physically and spiritually for him to go back and fulfill his dream.  He tells about the process in this book.

The book starts out talking about using your power bases - your strengths.  He says "you should celebrate the thing you do well and stop worrying about the way God didn't make you."  Once you find what you do well, there are 11 things you do to grow.  Master the basics - "Find out the most basic things you're supposed to do; then do them over and over and over until you do them perfectly."  Change your attitude by changing your perspective.  Visualize your goals.  Defy your skeptics and believe in yourself - "You have to wonder how much greatness is lying hidden in our society today simply because these men and women of future greatness are surrounded by the negativism of this world."  Be ready to commit to your goal - "Commitment is a lifelong discipline of giving away all that you have for the sake of one awe-inspiring goal."  Know the team you are playing for.  Be yourself and be transparent with others.  Turn your adversities into your advantages.  Be compassionate and merciful with others. Maximize the time that God gave you instead of focusing on the urgent.  Keep your body healthy for a long life.

Each of these power bases is covered in an easy-to-read chapter full of stories and applications.  I would say this is a great book to read for anyone considering a life change or anyone who is ready to follow their dreams.

I got this book free from the booksneeze.com program from Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Flynt is a personal trainer of sorts for athletes. He’s developed some principles that will help you better tone your body. In The Power Based Life he turns that idea spiritual. He says that you need to:

(1) Play to Your Strengths. Figure out what you’re good at and do it, don’t spend time on things you’re average at. Find your talent and figure out a way to make money at it.

(2) Mindscape: Cultivate a Winning Attitude. Your circumstances don’t have to dictate your attitude. You do this by practicing positive self talk and by memorizing and quoting attitude Scriptures out loud.

(3) Visualization: See What Can Be. This is the idea of, “If you can dream it you can achieve it.” He says to picture yourself accomplishing an action and you’re more likely to actually accomplish it. Visualize it in detail and regularly.

(4) Belief: Defy the Skeptics. Negative attitudes spread. Don’t let it get to you. Also you need to have a healthy self-esteem and he says that you can know if your self-esteem is healthy or not by whether you have a good sense of humor, you’re open to new ideas and experiences, you project an attitude of flexibility and inventiveness, you preserve harmony and dignity under stress, you speak with ease and spontaneity, you are comfortable giving and receiving compliments and affection, you can speak honestly about accomplishments and shortcomings. This was probably the section I found most interesting. I’ve never heard someone give specific things like this to identify your self-esteem level.

(5) Committment: Move Forward Relentlessly. You have to want your goal more than anyone else, you have to want it longer than anyone else and you have to want it exclusively. You’ll have to give up things to get to your goal.

(6) Team: Know Who You Play For. The church is members of one another. How is that so? Flynt’s got a whole list of ways that we are members of one another.

(7) Identification: Fly Your Flag. Flynt decides that he’s going to carry his Bible around with him everywhere to see if people will treat him differently. They don’t, but he realizes that he treats them differently because everyone who sees him knows he’s a Christian. Note: Be transparent! This builds friendships.

(8) Adversity: Turn Your Difficulties to Your Advantage. Use your mistakes to give other people hope. Be positive even in struggles and you’ll turn them into success.

(9) Compassion: Practice Radical Mercy. We don’t know people’s whole story. There’s a reason they act like they do. We should cut them some slack.

(10) Time: Maximize Your Moments. Make the most out of your life. You don’t know how long you’ll have.

I wasn’t a big fan of this book. I wouldn’t recommend it. Pretty much everything you need to know you just read. Part of why I didn’t like it was because Flynt’s taken principles my mother taught me when I was 10 and put them in a book. I already know that stuff. Give me something I don’t know. He also uses Scripture out of context. I thought I was going to be able to say that he didn’t use a single Scripture in the entire book in context, but he finally made his way around to it toward the middle of the book.

Author Mike Flynt describes a "power base" as the center of personal strength use to meet challenges that, once discovered and maximized, will lead to a more significant, satisfying, and successful life.

We all want to have happy, successful lives. For some of us, it takes longer than others. Flynt himself didn't come into his happy, fulfilled life until the age of 59 years old, when he received national attention for returning to his college alma mater, Sul Ross State University, to play his senior year, becoming the oldest contributing member of a college football team in NCAA history. He took the tools that he learned from his experiences to share with us 12 different strategies to use to tap into our personal "power bases."

I found this book extremely motivating and uplifting, though geared much more towards sports fans. Mike Flynt speaks often of his football career and makes many sports references, which I think are necessary for his story and this book, but were often lost on me. While reading I often thought to myself that my husband should really be reading this book. I think it would speak volumes to his entrepreneurial spirit.

I did enjoy all of the biblical references this book made, as well as the power-packed quotes by Flynt. It is clearly evident that this man's heart and soul are in his beliefs. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"If God has made your to do something, there will be a way to do it."
"Time is the greatest teacher there is."
"Your attitude is the single most important aspect of who you are and the leading indicator of where you're going."
I think this is a great book for anyone who is looking for a positive piece of motivation to keep them moving in the right direction, whether it be for business or another personal goal. It's a great book to have on your shelf and to come back to time after time when you need a little reminder that you are a worthy child of God and you deserve a fulfilling life.

The final chapters of the book cover everything from staying motivated, to keeping your patience, to living a longer and healthier life. Flynt really goes the distance in showing his readers from personal experience how to steer your life in the right direction for you.

The Power –Based Life: Realize Your Life’s Goals and Dreams by Strengthening Your Spirit
By Mike Flynt

Mike Flynt owns the company Powerbase Fitness, LLC. This book focuses on helping people be who God created them to be. He has twelve strategies that make up your “power base” including: play to your strengths, master the essentials, cultivate a winning attitude, see what can be, defy the skeptics, move forward relentlessly, know who you play for, fly your flag, turn your difficulties to your advantage, practice radical mercy, maximize your moments, and sow health- reap a longer life.
This book reads like a devotional. Flynt includes many scripture references and has stories from his own life, sports, and business. He talks about his own personal faith. I enjoyed his “Hallmarks of Health:” Faithfulness, Discipline, Embracing Small Victories, Stress Reduction, The Prayer Factor, Rebuild Yourself, Cardiovascular Benefits, Better Relationships. As a former college athlete, this book made me really want to get back into shape. He stresses how great working out is for your physical health. I also like how he put an importance on spiritual health as well.
I would recommend it to any patrons who are interested in sports and faith, or strength training, or fitness. I think it would be especially popular with men. However, I really enjoyed the it as a former athlete and coach myself.

I enjoy reading self-improvement books so looked forward to reading this book by Mike Flynt. In his senior year at college, Flynt was expelled for fighting and never got to complete his football career. At the age of 59, he returned to that same college and played his final year of football.

The Power-Based Life was developed out of Mike's desire to help others discover how to become the person God planned for them to be. He encourages his readers to find their talents and figure out how to make money at it. He stresses the need for positive self talk, including memorizing of Scripture. He says, "If you can dream it you can achieve it" and encourages the reader to visualize a positive outcome. He points out the need to be a team player, and reminds us that as members of the church we are members of one another.

His final chapters teach on how to deal with adversity, the importance of cutting others slack, and how to make the most out of your life, as you don't know how much time you have left.

The chapter I enjoyed the most was the one entitled, "Visualization: See What Can Be." Mike presents this chapter well and has some good illustrations. Unfortunately, I found this book overall to be disappointing for me. I think men--especially sportsmen--would probably get more out of it than I did.

The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt is written to help Christians discover what God created them to be and the work the were designed to do. Learning from his own life, he writes to help the reader "realize your life's goals and dreams by strengthening your body, mind, and spirit. He incorporates 12 strategies to assist the reader including focusing on positive attitudes, believing God for who He is, turning adversities to your advantage, and the benefits of practicing mercy and giving.

His points are well thought out and written to the average reader. But due to the amount of stories and examples, I would lose sight of the main point and would need to reread to refocus myself.

For someone who has a dream and wishes to focus himself, this book would give him steps and actions to take to help realize it while keeping God in the center of his life.

My rating: 3 out of 5 stars

A complimentary copy of this book was provided to me by Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze Program. I was not obligated to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are strictly my own.

In this book, Mike Flynt highlights a dozen points for helping you to realize your life goals and dreams.

I admit that because I’m not a football fan, I was initially turned off by the many sports analogies he shares in the book. After reading for awhile, however, I was able to recognize and appreciate the value that it brought to the book. I think the sports talk makes this book especially powerful for sports fans and young adults.

Thought provoking, meaningful, and quite spiritual, this book is a great motivator. Mike Flynt has motivated and inspired me to try harder and to do better at living my best life. It provides many scriptural references that make it all the better. It’s a book I’d recommend to anyone, Christians and non-Christians alike, although as I said, I do think sports fans are gonna like it the most!

I received this book free of charge from www.booksneeze.com for the purpose of this review. I was given no monetary compensation. The opinions are mine, and mine alone.
