June Thomson, a former teacher, has published 24 crime novels, 18 of which feature Detective Chief Inspector Jack Finch and his sergeant, Tom Boyce. She has also written six short story collections of Sherlock Holmes pastiches. Her books have been translated into many languages. She lives in St Albans in Hertfordshire.
After reading Thomson's novel, Past Reckoning, I didn't have high expectations for this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's mysteries like this, I think, that have earned Thomson such high praise from critics. The characters are well-drawn and nuanced. The so-called plot twist caught me by surprise, too. Reading this book was time well-spent.
An unbelievable plot and a dull detective make this a very pedestrian book, one of a long series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Finch. Apparently his name was changed to Rudd in the USA. I have read and enjoyed others in this series but not this one.
