Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the "Scissors Project" at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty's call...

Kiri's identity as the mysterious "X" who does makeovers behind the scenes is now public knowledge as she competes against hairstylist Narumi. In their one-on-one Scissors Project challenge the hairstylist who loses will receive a haircut by the winner--and must endure whatever that haircut might be...

This was okay. It was funny. I'm not super enamored with any of the characters though. I will read the next one because I have it checked out from the library.

*Warning, there will be mild spoilers*

This volume of Beauty Pop helped build on the highlights from its previous one, while also showcasing Arai's comedic chops and good use of conflict. I like that X's identity isn't as big of a deal as I was expecting it to be, and that the Scissors Project doesn't have bad intentions towards Kiri (although Ochiai is holding out hope she'll be one of them soon enough). It gives a sense of normalcy that some shojo series lack, where new characters and reveals are fashioned to serve as peak dramatic conflict.

Iori is the exception to this rule. I'm a little suspicious on how his crush (?) on Kiri's mom is going to come into play, since as of right now, a good chunk of his character is a stereotype. There was plenty of sweet content beyond this, though, and I felt the bonus story gave great background to the Scissors Project, and didn't show Narumi as one to lose his temper as easily as he can in the present.

Let me start this with saying that I did not read Vol. 1. I just found this one at the Salvation Army and bought it because books are like 25 cents there and I wasn't going to pass up really anything that looked remotely interesting. That being said-

This was cute. It was. And the characters were fun to read about, even if they were all very trope-y and characters that I'd seen before - like, I mean, the make-up guy and the nail guy were basically Kyoya and Honey from OHSHC, but that didn't mean they weren't fun to read about. And I did really like the main male character, because he was constantly angry and that was fun. And the main female character was fun! And that other guy who I'm pretty sure is an antagonist! They were all tons of fun!

That didn't really change the fact, though, that this was kind of a shallow, plot-less manga. It was episodic, almost, and that works sometimes, but it didn't quite work for this one. Overall, I might pick up more of this series if I find it in a thrift store, but I'm not going to seek it out.

I rated 5 stars just because I was not expecting it to be good...but then ...B A M !!!! the feels hit me. Beauty Pop was not the kind of genre I would jump at reading but someone recommended it to me over summer break, so I was like, ehh what the heck, why not??

Some parts were predictable of course, but I still can't believe I enjoyed reading shoujo. I smiled for about an hour after I completed this manga. This manga now has me wanting to read more shoujo. GIRL POWER!!

That's pretty much all I have to say. I would recommend it :}

A good volume, but it is feeling rather repetitive. It's still cute, but it seems like the same senario over and over, just with different makeovers. The wedding couple were cute, but I was a little freaked out when the school nurse talked about how she new the groom when he was at school - just a weird thing to fall in love with a past student..

There is an extra chapter in this volume, which gives a history of the Scissor Projects friendship. It's cute.

Like volume 1, between 2-3 stars for me, so rounded up. It has its funny moments, and the art is enjoyable, but mostly I'm enjoying it now as a nostalgic reread from high school.

It's a very shoujo series, so take that as it is. It can get repetitive, and Narumi definitely likes yelling. At this point, most of the characters are pretty stereotypical (pretty much except for Kiri!). I'm waiting for the plot to start developing more, now that the characters and basic premise are introduced.

In this volume, we see which extreme makeover won! It's also fun to see how irritated Narumi is because he just can't beat Kiri. That's my favorite kind of rival dynamic.

Volume 2 is also fun because we meet Kiri's mother, who is just as crazy and adorable as her father. We get the sense that there was some kind of shift that caused Kiri to stop hair-cutting as much, but we don't learn what that shift is. Yet.

Onward!

NO.

I complained in my review of the first volume that there were too many characters and they all looked similar/bland. Thankfully Volume 2 slows down a bit to give the reader a chance to figure out who the main characters are and why they might be worth following.

Speaking of characters worth following, my favorite so far is the aromatherapy enthusiast Iori Minamoto. I think he's entertaining and kind-hearted (if lacking in subtlety) and I appreciate that his dialogue has been peppered with incorrect words to show how rusty his Japanese is after living in New York for so long.

Looking forward to getting to know the characters more in the books to come. We are still a bit at the surface level and getting glimpses of beneath the surface.
Enjoying the characters and their antics and specific personalities. In the first book I was reminded of Ouran high school host club but in this one the main guy is different, he has a temper he can't control. But it does have a similar vibe still. I'm enjoying it and looking forward to the next one!

This manga gets better every time I read it. This one focuses on Shogo and Kiri working around each other. Shogo Narumi can't stand how nonchalant Kiri is. Their back and forth is just hilarious to read. And I love the bonus story in this one on how Kazuhiko, Shogo, and Kei became friends.

This manga reminds me a lot of Ouran High School Host Club. I don't know that I liked this as much as the first volume, but I still enjoyed it. We got more history on the three main characters and still kept some competition going.

Not quite as cute and fun as the first volume, but still really enjoyable. Inori is just irritating and gets in the way!

A cute and enjoyable story, if not especially memorable. In this volume, the Scissors Project gets a perfume specialist, there's more family drama, and Naru-Naru is constantly mad at someone!

The teacher makeover was cute until you found out their origins and then it became creepy. The meeting between the three friends was a fun story - humanized them a bit more.

Not much more plot development in this chapter besides perhaps a closer look at Kiri’s family life and more SP projects. But still a really fun read and some character progression..

Ugh. I wanted to like this, since Emma LOVES this series, but I really did not like it at all. It is shallow, boring and repetitive. There are 10 books in the series! It would take a lot to force me to read another one in the series.

It's about four Japanese kids, three boys and one girl. The boys are all the best hairdressers and nail and makeup artists in their community. Naturally, they want to be CEOs of their dads' hair and makeup companies and beauty salons. They take "ugly" girls and make them over for free, for glory, and everyone oohs and ahs over how pretty and beautiful the girls are afterward. It makes the girls swoon over the hairstylist boy, especially, who has an anger problem. The girl is his rival, very talented and very humble.

It all gets more ridiculous when they makeover the school librarian and a teacher she is engaged to so that they can have the wedding of their dreams.

Ugh.

Contains chapters 6 - 8
This volume is really entertaining and introduces us to some new characters. The first new character is Iori Minamoto and he used to hang around Kiri's a lot when he was younger. The second new character that we meet is Kiri's mother. I really enjoyed the chapter in this volume where they give the school nurse and one of the teachers a make over for their wedding.

This volume also contains a bonus chapter called "Dreams Come True".
This chapter starts with when Kiri is cutting Narumi's hair after the competition but then it turns into Ochiai remembering how he met Kie and Narumi. This chapter is really fun and gives you some history about some of the characters as well as their friendship.

I am looking forward to the next volume and seeing how this series develops.

I only own the first two volumes in this series, if I cannot get any of the others this isn't that bad of a stopping point if I'm honest.

This volume picks up straight after the 'cliff-hanger' of volume 1, it builds on the characters we already knew, introduces one new one and gives up the back story of the SP club. Later volumes of this series begin to have arcs that cover more than one volume but these early ones are more about setting the scenes up - it really pays off in the later volumes.

Well, it took me only one year to collect all the ten volumes in this series. I'm pretty proud of myself.

Not a big fan of bonus stories but this one, depicting how the Scissors Project got together was quite sweet.

I quite enjoy this series, and I'll do my best to collect the other eight volumes I'm missing.

I really like a character like Kiri: she's strong, and she has a bad temper. But she's always there when someone needs help.

I wish the art was a bit more detailed, though.

Shogo Narumi is a gifted hair specialist. although, paired with the amazing x (kiri) he seems to have more anger than usaul. He's in the most popular group in the called the S.P. (scissors project), along with his friends ochiai and kei. When entered in a hair cutting competition by ochiai, him vs. the amazing x begin a battle. Winner gets to cut the losers hair, will Narumi win, or will he loose?

This is a fun series, in part because the heroine is not the typical cheerful happy-go-lucky type. She seems bored with life, often sleepy, and totally not bothered by the antics of everyone around her. Yet she's quite aware of those who need her help. She's a skilled hairstylist, yet some dark secret has kept her from pursuing it, except when someone's being picked on or rejected because of their looks.
