Bay is plunged into to the world of international intrigue when old school friend, Jordan von Brandt, returns to South Carolina to bury her mother. Widowed socialite Leslie Herrington is found dead in her Rio hotel room. Natural causes, the authorities say. Murder insists her estranged daughter. Over all hang the frightening shadows of Bay’s own past and the looming threat of a killer hurricane. From the beaches of Hilton Head to the fabled islands of the Caribbean...the storm is rising!
Kathy wrote her first story at the age of six, then decided to take a few decades off. She grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio and attended college in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. For twenty-five years she practiced her profession as an accountant in both public and private practice. In 1994 she and her husband Norman retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Her road to publishing success has taken many twists and turns. She self-published her first Bay Tanner mystery, In For a Penny, in 2001 using the innovative print-on-demand technology. Its success led to an offer from a small, regional publisher who reissued the first novel along with its sequel, And Not a Penny More, on Valentine's Day of 2002. A reprint of both books had to be ordered within six weeks.
Then serendipity struck. An editor for St. Martin's Press, visiting relatives in nearby Beaufort, was introduced to the Bay Tanner mysteries. A month later she called to offer Kathy a hardcover contract. They have since published Perdition House, Judas Island, Resurrection Road, Bishop's Reach and Sanctuary Hill in both hardcover and paperback. The eighth Bay Tanner novel, The Mercy Oak, is slated for release April, 2008.
Kathy is a founding member of Island Writers' Network and serves as treasurer for both the Sisters in Crime National Board and the Southeast Chapter of Mystery Writers of America.
Kathy has been a mentor in the Hilton Head schools and participates as a Friend of Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry. When not writing and touring for her books, Kathy and Norman play tennis, share long walks on the beach, and enjoy the lush beauty of the tidal marsh from the decks of their Hilton Head condominium. She has two stepsons and four grandchildren.
3.5 stars. I wish I'd remembered a few more details from the first book. The snippets given weren't quite enough to catch me up to speed. But this book seemed more believable and better written than the first.
Bay Tanner, the sexy/retired/impetuous/daring/rich accountant (no kidding), embarks on another thrilling adventure. I always try to read one of these books when I'm in the Beaufort SC area where the books are set. The books are not great literature, but a fun romp.
I read the first of this series about a year ago. I really wish this time I would have bought the others. Bay Tanner is the woman and I can’t wait to see where she leads us to.
Very enjoyable mystery read. It's fun to read this now where she references Walkmans and not having a cell phone and AOL and dial-up. Let's hope this time she gets to keep the guy.
This is the 2nd book in the Bay Tanner mysteries series, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series now. I think the second was better than the first. Kathryn Wall is evolving and becoming an author that shows she wants to stay around awhile. This adventure took Bay Tanner to the caribbean and South America via a cruise to undercover yet another mystery her sordid friends got her involved in. There is a lot of excitement there is stealing, killing, deception, a little romance. All around it was a good book, should I mention that I accidentally got sucked into the book last night/morning and when I looked at the clock thinking it was like 2am it was in actuality 5:55am. So if that doesn't say the book is riveting then I do not know what to say. *smiles*
I really enjoyed this story about a strong woman who seems to get involved in everyone's problems. I want to go and get her first book though to read about this character and learn more about her and her past. Nix on the cigarette smoking though.
Story concept for a mystery was good. However emphasis on constant smoking by lead character & others was distracting. Made reading story annoying. Not opposed to smokers but find over use of word or activity distracts from any story. Trudged on because mystery was of interest.
I enjoyed this book mostly because Kathryn Wall is a local author and I could relate to many of the places she noted in her book. She has a whole series of books she wrote.
I couldn't put this one down...I am excited about the new romance for Bay as well as the new business venture with her dad and her newly found friend and internet pro, Erik.

Kathryn R Wall and Bay Tanner easily transport me back to Hilton Head and the Carolina Low Country. This was a quick read and a much needed change of pace.
Though this one veered away from Beaufort County, SC, a bit, I still enjoyed the mystery and the characters. Wall is a straightforward writer; her protagonist is smart but definitely damaged--thank goodness, not irreparably!
I think that this second one is better than the first one. For one thing, the protagonist seems a little more sensible. However, this one will be way too confusing if you don't read the other one first.
