I got this from my grandfather, and did enjoy the new perspectives it offered. The author did a great job of using a variety of source material to paint a picture of the experience of immigrant women in America, from work to home life to cultural changes. There was definitely limitations, though; the work focused on immigrants arriving to the East Coast and potentially moving westward, so really focused on European immigrant experiences. There was also a certain over-reliance on some sources (I didn't count, but I'm willing to bet Jette Bruns came up every chapter) which detracted somewhat from the large scope of the book. Overall, though, interesting read!

Very interesting history of American immigrant women. This book breaks down how the different ethnic groups that poured into America during this time period treated women. You will be surprised!

Sluggish prose, but really interesting if dreadful story of immigrants, natives and their differences. I think of relatives and friends. Quite a punch.
