Blessing or Curse: You Can Choose: Freedom From Pressures You Thought You Had to Live With

Rate this book
Some people seem to get more than their share of success and fulfillment, while others suffer repeated failure and frustration. Why is this so? With over 200,000 copies sold, Blessing or Curse has given thousands of believers a biblical understanding of two forces at work in every blessings and curses. Now with a new introduction by the author and a chapter-by-chapter study guide, this tenth-anniversary edition will enable many more to enjoy the benefits of God's blessings and protect themselves from curses that may have originated in a previous generation. A curse, says Prince, is not an obsolete Old Testament concept. He draws on real-life experiences of believers-including himself-who realized that successions of misfortunes were not God's doing, or even happenstance, but resulted from a curse. The author helps readers determine if they could be under a curse, explores the many causes of a curse, and offers clear direction for applying God's remedy.

One of the joys of reading Derek's writings is the prevalence of the Holy Spirit and the inclusion of scriptural references and precepts for the edification of his reader. Although he was a scholar in his own right with an estimable academic pedigree, we encounter a man wholly reliant on the Lord and driven by His Word and dependency on the leadership of the Spirit for his well-being and sustenance. Knowing God did not prevent him from needing Him. His confidence was not in the knowledge he obtained, but in the One who wrest him from the darkened abyss where he once dwelt.

As with most Old Testament subjects, the Christian interpretation has many elements ranging from uncertainty to replacement and the wholehearted conclusion of its inapplicability. In situations like these one wonders how the conclusions are drawn and if the suggestions of perpetual maintenance often mentioned by the Lord have acquired a different meaning in our modern age. Thankfully, Derek grabs the bull by the horn and candidly clears the air on a subject mired in silence and confusion.

The bible is filled with multiple inferences of cause and effect. Right action begets a positive conclusion and its opposite brings a less desirable outcome. In regard to curses, he illustrates the concepts which breed their creation and continuity and those which yield the favorable blessings many seek. One of the clearest depictions of this principle is found in Proverbs. If one approaches the text utilizing the equation of "if and then" the outworking is easy to detect.

The concluding prayers and proclamations are helpful tools for those unfamiliar with the practice or requiring assistance in applying the appropriate word to their situation. While many long to rest in the fullness of the blessings He proclaimed, we cannot ignore the ramifications of our rebellion and the difficulties it brings.

Nevertheless, we have a clear resource which enables us each to stand before the Throne of Grace in humble submission, contrition, revocation, and repentance. These are the tenets for freedom along with our continued commitment to maintain that state and avoid further captivity. To do so we must acknowledge our besetting sins and desist in applying futile logic to God's holy writ.

I need to comment on this book because of the amount of harm it has done. Two of the most harmful deviations from Christianity are exposed in Derek Prince’s writing, and if I didn’t know that it has happened again and again over the centuries, I would say that he is the origin of the modern manifestation of this twisted version of Christian discipleship.

First, I must point out that Prince is what I call a Jerusalemist. Jerusalemism is the mentality that Jerusalem lies at the center of the universe. It started when David moved the tabernacle from the holy places established by Moses and placed it in his own capitol city, thereby asserting his own ownership over God. From that point, David’s bloodline felt free to deviate from God’s covenant while still holding Him to His promise of blessing their nation. Religions have done this with their various deities for thousands of years, and it is done by almost every nation and empire in one form or another. And it never ends well.

Second, and more to the point, Prince does not understand the nature of the demonic realm. Demons exist to do three things: deceive, condemn, and oppose. They deceive by leading mankind astray from the Truth. Then they condemn mankind for having gone astray. Then they oppose those who try to lead mankind back to the truth. Their opposition often comes in the guise of more condemnation—especially if they can deceive a large populous of people into thinking that the Truth is really a lie. Even Jesus could not avoid being condemned by those who had been deceived.

In the first and second part of this book, Prince paints a hopeless picture of demonic curses lurking in every shadow and around every corner waiting to pounce on us and our children. All curses, he asserts, are the cause of sin by either ourselves or our ancestors. The situation seems pretty hopeless. Then he goes on to point out that even Christians, not being careful how they pray, can pray condemnation and curses on their own brethren when they pass undue judgment. Essentially, we are cursing ourselves. The Catholics are cursing the Protestants. The traditional worshipers are cursing those who sing loud songs of praise and wear their hair long. The Baptists are cursing those who don’t go to their particular church. Jerusalemists are cursing you for not pledging allegiance to Jerusalem. And the Amish especially are cursing you right now for reading this (using electricity to do so).

When Prince eventually comes to the point, he provides a solution to the problem that is as much white witchcraft as the old “Claim it in faith, buy it on credit, make God pay the interest” prayer that I used to hear so much just before the housing market collapsed. At the same time, it is book-burning superstition at its worst. I, it would seem, am hopelessly cursed because I grew up in a town (not heard of at the time Prince wrote this book) that was heavily involved with the supernatural. I had many supernatural encounters (several in my own home) that I never went looking for. To understand what I was up against, I read books—books that Prince says cursed me for so much as touching. At one point, finding an obviously magical implement that had been placed in my possession, I consulted with a woman, a witch by contemporary Christian standards, to find out what the thing was and who might have snuck it into my house. I dared to go into dark places, and sometimes I got burned (literally) from the encounter. Unlike some Christians, I did not stick my head in a hole in the ground and hide my light from the world. To this day, I read up and study the things of this world so that I can better understand what kids today are talking about. I’ve played Pokemon and the Magic card game as a means of fellowship and an ice-breaker for deeper conversation; Prince would tell me to burn them since they contain images of creatures that might have been worshipped in ancient times. In fact, before I wrote Men of Renown, I studied both the science of dragons (being extinct creatures that were still on this earth in Biblical times) and the flood and monster myths of other cultures that Prince would condemn as delving into New Age religion. Sadly, when I released Men of Renown to the world, I was met with Princely opposition (condemnation) because my interpretation of the Earth in the days of Noah was “different—therefore wrong” by traditional theological standards.

After reading this book, I did not burn anything in my house. Instead, I consecrated it. What I have on my bookshelves are there to serve God and to enable me to show Truth to the world. I have to assume Prince did the same with the resources he used to research spiritual warfare beyond what the Bible has to say on the subject. What I do with my time is consecrated as well. I’ve had Christian brothers and sisters criticize me in recent years for not doing what they thought I should do; in one instance the condemnation of a pastor’s wife put my entire family in danger. Perhaps Prince’s work does some good in exposing the dangers of our own selfish prayers and our own judgment of others. For now, all I can do is let the world know that what I do with my time, what I keep on my bookshelf, what I put into my mind, is between me and God. After all, I am His child. And as Prince himself points out towards the beginning of this book, those who Curse the Children of God will themselves be cursed instead.

There is a tendency to over emphasize or underemphasize the spiritual world and all it entails. There is way more that I don’t understand. This books illuminated some things that feel important. Our words matter and do hold power. God can and is working to redeem all things through Christ. And there were parts of this book that felt very black and white and left me with a feeling of anxiousness around things that done need to have that much power or influence over my everyday life. I’m walking away from this book finding the balance of acknowledging the spiritual world but not over emphasizing it. Over all good teaching.

Fresh New Revelation to Ancient Truth

Unfortunately, there are those that would dismiss this body of teaching outright because, in their echo chamber of "truth", they're not familiar with these clear exegetical teachings. It is the glory of the Lord to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out. This the author has done. Derek Prince has conscientiously provided a profoundly thorough examination of a common subject found in scripture but rarely, if ever, discussed in current theological thought. It is as if Luther or Calvin's failure to discuss the concepts of "blessing and curses" means neither should we! Incredulously, contemporary evangelicalism disregards the significant attention scripture gives in references to this incredibly important subject in both the NT and OT. I can only commend to others that the impact of embracing a modicum of these concepts will dramatically impact their families, church and community in powerful ways.

Ever wonder why you seem to experience frequent accidents, injury or illness? Wonder why you never seem able to get ahead, even when you repeatedly come "this close" to success? Does there seem to be a pattern of behavior or mental disorder in your family that cannot be explained by simple genetics? Maybe your experience is the result of a personal or family curse.

Always the careful, but fearless Bible scholar, Derek Prince systematically reveals the reality of curses and how they can be detected in our lives. Then, he instructs readers in how they can be delivered from the power of those curses and enjoy God's blessings, instead.

A must-have for every Christian who desires to live the abundant life Jesus promised. Also a great gift for our struggling friends.

An in-depth study into the power of words, the material presented has life-changing potential. Be aware that this is probably not something the casual reader can zip through. While organized in a straightforward and logical manner, the reading level may be intimidating to some and the amount of information covered could easily be overwhelming as well. With this in mind, it is probably best approached as a study; even better if you can go through it with a group.

I found this particular DK book very discombobulated. It was hard to follow the major theme and it often strayed into disparate streams of thought. Not his best work.

This book is dangerous and should not be recommended to anyone. It's filled with a narrative built upon extremely selective reading of Hebrew Bible that's very legalistic.

It's mindboggling how much Derek focuses on curses and their power. His go-to verse is Ex 20:5 which says that children are punished for the iniquity of parents to the third and the fourth generation if those parents bowed down to idols. He can't take the next verse seriously though, which says "but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments", because his teaching would be ruined. Let's very briefly turn to New Testament.

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (J 8:36), "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." (Gal 3:13) and all the other sibling passages that talk about being free in Christ, who lifted the curse upon himself - they easily nullify these teachings. Of course, when cost sunk fallacy hits for all the time spent building this teaching and spreading it, there will be no other way for people like Derek and his followers than to resort to finding excuses and continuing to distract with their views of spiritual warfare.

"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." (Romans 6:14, I also encourage to read the context) - yet Derek and his followers still need to break those spiritual strongholds and bind demons who curse them. They will laugh at Catholic masses where Jesus is sacrificed again and again when Hebrews talks about a sacrifice once and for all, but then they will mock Jesus' sacrifice by trying to win in the constant surrounding spiritual warfare, over and over, and "proclaim freedom" like a magic spell. If only someone in New Testament tought people how to pray...

And as for the blessings and curses in Deut 28, Derek twists the living out of the text to accompany his narrative as he wants. He connects singular passages with whatever fits from anywhere else in the Bible. It takes as little as looking at the text historically, having on mind the time and audience that the text describes. With that you will realize that this text doesn't speak about YOU - you can move then to the New Testament and learn about the abundant grace of God in Jesus Christ.
Also, as for the point of singling out passages, verse 45 and 46 say:

"All these curses shall come upon you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the Lord your God by observing the commandments and the decrees that he commanded you. They shall be among you and your descendants as a sign and a portent forever." - I dare you read all the previous passages. Yet, according to Derek, we're supposed to just look for curses in fields of life where literally every human struggles in some way. And if we somehow won't find any in our life and it seems to good, we have to put a burden on ourselves of investigating four past generations to see whether there's not an active generational curse that affects us unknowingly. If you believe these teachings, I can bet all my life savings that you will find something.

My last point is going to revolve around the historical reading idea. The scholarly consensus is that in the Hebrew Bible there's no Satan character as in New Testament, and there's no demonic forces undergoing a spiritual warfare except for Daniel which dates to 2nd century BC, which is an era of Second Temple Judaism and increased interest in spiritual dualism, where good and evil fights each other with big armies represented by their commanders (like Archangel Michael, Archangel Gabriel, Asmodeus, Belial etc).
Look again at the blessings and curses. Everything is caused by YHWH, the LORD. Maybe those, who believe these teachings, should start binding God instead of Satan and demons? Of course Derek wouldn't aknowledge a God who causes sickness, striking with grevious boils, afflicting with madness, blindness, confusion of mind etc. He just doesn't care and uses the text as he pleases and as his tradition directs him. He can't be trusted as a teacher, at least in these fields.

I could only write so much, but I'll leave you with that. These are the teachings that can result in psychological health neglect, divisiveness and spiritual authority abuse (major one). I wish these teachings become passe as soon as possible.

I had bought this book over 10 years ago at a Christian bookstore, when I was 17. I was confused and desperate and believed I was cursed from childhood. I had never heard of anything like "curses" in the Christian circles before. So when I saw this book, it shone like a ray of hope in that bookstore, maybe it can shed some light directly to my situation.

Then, I have tried to read this book many times over the past years, but I never managed to finish it, not for any particular reason. Perhaps I never felt like I was ready. Then recently, I felt my posture of heart change and align with God, and I finished this book. I am 27 now.

I am glad I read it at this time and not then. My journey of healing has been long and arduous, and I dare say, it is not completed yet, and perhaps never will be. Yet I say this with hope. I felt so seen and understood by this book, in every situation described. And in some anecdotes / real life examples, I feel so encouraged by their testimonies.

Some notes:

REVELATION
1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you if there are any generational curses affecting you or your family.
If there are any curses operating in your life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discover the cause of this problem, so it can be dealt with effectively.

REPENTANCE
2. Spend a few moments with the Lord and ask Him to reveal any dead works in your life, and then voice a prayer of repentance and ask for His forgiveness for sins. To pass from the curse to the blessing requires repentance and restitution. Go before the Lord and repent for your participation in these sins and then ask God what He would have you do by way of restitution. Repent of speaking negative words over your life. Revoke the curse and speak a word of blessing that is the opposite of the curse. Help us to get rid of any objects too, Lord.

RELEASE
3. Prepare my heart to say the prayer of release. Take the time to proclaim each of the eleven proclamation Scriptures listed on pages 259-267. Also confess with your month each verse at the end of each chapter, memorise it if you can and speak the affirmation.

This book talked about some things that are very real. It did cause me to reflect on some things that I maybe otherwise would not have thought about. However, I would say the possibility of this book instilling fear in people would be high. I feel if there is a spectrum of how we view the supernatural, curses, strongholds, etc., this book is way on one extreme. It felt as if it were saying everything you say or do can curse someone or yourself, and I don’t believe curses are that flippant. Like I said, there were things discussed that are very real and should be considered. I do believe our words have power and the things our ancestors have done or been involved in can have an effect on us. It’s important to invite the Holy Spirit to speak to those things and reveal those things in our lives. We as believers walk in the Authority of Christ over any of these things the Holy Spirit may reveal.
This is not a book I would recommend to a young believer, but I would discuss some of the information with them.

Powerful!!!

. If you ever wondered why you are your family members lives never seems to prosper, you may look back at previous generations and notice a pattern of “ bad luck”. it’s possible that one of you ancestors invoked a curse by their disobedience to God’s word and satanic involvement etc. and you and other family members are paying the price. The good news is: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, Gal. (3:13)
but we have to appropriate it so that we and our descendants will be blessed. This book is a God sent, it will shed light on the Truth about blessing and curses. You will be blessed beyond measure. Get ready to change yourselves and your families as you learn how in this awesome book. Choose to leave a legacy of blessing for the next generation. Stop the curse! Be blessed!

If I want to understand the Bible better, I refer to David Pawson; but if I want to learn more about spiritual warfare, I go to Derek Prince (don't be confused with Joseph Prince ya). There are invincible forces influencing our lives today. Some recognize it, some just simply ignorance. "The Bible speaks plainly about these forces," writes Prince, "In fact, it has a great deal to say about them. It calls them respectively blessings and curses." The word “bless” or “blessing” occurs more than 410 times in the Bible; the word "curse" occurs nearly 160 times. Both are absolutely real —so real that our Lord Jesus had to be made a curse so that we might be redeemed from the curse and receive the blessing (read Galatians 3:13).

Have you ever wondered if you might be affected by a curse? I began to study this due to some recent events that have happened in my family.

Prince discusses the biblical causes and effects of curses, as well as the causes and effects of blessings.

Overall, it's a fairly good book. However, I disagreed with chapter 8, which is about anti-semitism, because Prince makes the common church error of misidentifying Israel.

Also, I wonder if his prayer for breaking curses is sufficient, especially if someone has unclean spirits living in him/her? That's an unanswered question I have since I've never been involved in deliverance work.

Anyway, I think this is a good introduction to the topic of curses and blessings.

This book is the biblical account of blessing and curse in the life of a person. The seven steps of deliverance is shown as follow:
1. confess Christ redemption of sin
2. repent your sinful behavior
3. ask for forgiven of sin
4. forgive all those who hurt you
5. renounce all the satanic connection
6. prayer of deliverance

This is a must read. You will learn how to remove any generational curses plaguing your life that you weren't even aware of. You might not believe they exist, but you never know how your ancestors may have behaved that brought your bloodline under the influence of unclean or demonic spirits. But don't fret, you will learn why it's important to remove them right away.

Powerful! A must read for any professing Christian!

Our culture has become numb to the things of the Spirit realm and this book rejuvenates and reawakens us as Christians to the battle we are in. As well, by the help of the Holy Spirit, the book helps rekindles the fire of the power and authority we have as blood-bought Christians in this world.

I picked up and put down this book several times. It’s not an easy read, but is thought provoking. I don’t agree with everything in this book, but I know Jesus as my Lord and savior, and I do believe in blessings and curses. My favorite parts of the book were the author’s true stories intermixed in the chapters.
