A 2004 homage to Arthur Upfield, using some of the (almost all forgotten) characters from a number of his Bony novels in the setting of a private boy’s school in 1955 Albury. New teacher, young Ralph Wellington, pretends to be part-Aboriginal which complicates his falling in love with the pretty school secretary; others of the school community are part of a narrative which proceeds with little drama but well-drawn characters and period attitudes, towards an abrupt ending. A little underwhelming, with an extra star for the concept, but good on time and place.
