Angels of the Night: Discovery is an amazing debut book in the Angels of the Night series. Kennedy draws you in with brilliant characters and the mysterious world of Free Masons and Vampires. The story was intriguing from the very beginning and at no point became predictable. Every time I thought I had it figured out, the author would surprise me with a new twist in the story. Even though this book is tagged as a Young Adult, I wouldn’t suggest it for someone under the age of 17. While there are no completed sexual encounters, there are scenes that get pretty steamy and there are emotional aspects to the story that are more suitable to an adult’s perspective. The conversations and interactions between Allison Webber and the sexy vampire twins, Darcy and Thane Wallace, are a key element and bring you into the story making it easy to put yourself into their shoes. Or maybe that was just me wanting to be in Allison’s shoes.

Angels of the Night will appeal to any vampire romance lover no matter if you normally read in the Adult genre or Young Adult genre. This book will stay with you long after the last page and have you waiting anxiously for the next installment in the Angels of the Night series.

Original Romancing the Darkside Review:
http://romancingthedarkside.blogspot....

A thrilling debut of mystery, secret societies and vampires!

When Allison Webber is approached by her father to join a secret society of men, mainly for her own protection, she barely questions the invitation and agrees. The secret society is none other than the Masons, a long established society of men who know of the existence of vampires and work hard to keep their kind a secret. At her first meeting Allison is introduced to Thane and Darcy Wallace, two gorgeous vampire twins who are part of the Angels of Night, vampire warriors whose job is to track and eliminate the bloodthirsty females of their kind. As the only woman member, Allison is to assist the Wallace brothers in their quest, all while trying to resist the undeniable attraction between them that is forbidden, which is proving to be harder than she ever imagined.

I must admit that I was first drawn to this book by it's title and beautiful cover and guessed it probably falls into the Young Adult genre. I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading it and found that although the characters are young, the story reads and has elements that would easily capture an adult reader's attention. The author's writing style is fluid and draws you into each scene with her splendid cast of characters.

I found Allison to be a smart, fun and young heroine. She's still in high school but isn't your typical "woe is me" teenage girl and I really like that she is her own person and doesn't give in to the constant peer pressure that comes along with trying to fit in. When she meets Darcy and Thane there's some major chemistry that she struggles with (especially when she finds out they're vampires) that makes her character very relatable for anyone who's ever been a teenage girl! Allison really blew me away with how easily she accepts the existence of vampires and her role in the society of the Masons, I don't think I would have responded the same way in her shoes but I commend her for being courageous.

Thane and Darcy might be twins but these two are far from identical! Thane is the strong, brooding type, a man of little words. His twin and Allison's love interest, Darcy, is the mischievous "bad-boy" who still holds on to his humanity despite being a vampire. They often reminded me of Louis and Lestat from Interview with a Vampire! Darcy is my favorite of the two brothers, he's strong, sexy and has tons of charm but also has a dark past he reveals to Allison, his vulnerability in that moment is why I fell for him. The tension between Darcy and Allison is spectacular (and sometimes drove me crazy) but you have to love a gentleman! Thane is a complex and intriguing character that will have you doubting your thoughts on him and then completely surprise you. He is the very definition of a wolf in sheep's clothing but there's still something sexy and entertaining about him!

The interactions between Thane, Darcy and Allison are what really drives the story, enabling the reader to step into their world with ease. The switching between Allison's point of view and Darcy's was a bit confusing, as it comes towards the last chapters of the book, but doesn't deter you from continuing with the story. Filled with secrets, forbidden romance and betrayal, Angels of Night is a new and exciting addition to the paranormal genre that will draw both new and old vampire romance fans and have you wanting more!

I like this book. Unfortunately I do not love it. I could love it, I may still love future works from this writer as she has a real gift with story. There are just some rookie details that bother me, pull me out of the story. N

ow, I will climb into the armchair quarterback recliner and give it a go. Those who can't do..criticize others and hope they know it is meant with kindness and respect?

Note this will probably be my longest review yet, and I do it because I really do like this book.

1. Word choice: these are petty, I admit, but a camp is a transient location. A cabin is a permanent structure. The characters go to cabins, not camps. And Portal does not fit the tone of this story. I applaud trying to find a different word for a boring object but the tone was just off.

2. Long descriptions: To me the scenes tended to drag on a little too long. Kennedy is great at building tension, but tension only holds so long. Like the Mason scene. Really? She knew being branded was a part of the deal. She should have maybe said no, was afraid, and have Darcy jump in to save her. Same effect with a lot less running around.

3. Point of View: First person point of view (POV) is hard. I commend Kennedy for being able to mostly pull it off. BUT. Only one person gets to have first person POV. We don't get Allison POV only to switch midway to Darcy POV, then back to Allison POV. I didn't know who was talking at the start and had to go back.

4. Linguistic Realism: Back to the Mason scene. B**ch is a very teenage girl word. I don't believe grown men who are supposed to be honor bound citizens would use it. It's too new. The other word... yeah I believe it.

Personal dislikes, grounded on nothing but my opinion. Why did Thane suddenly turn into a lusting beast at the lake? Seems out of character for him. Do I believe Allison would kiss him, yes. Do I believe Thane would behave the way he did, not really. It set up an artificial, contrived scene where Allison is taken by the Tera. He really could have just gone to get her a burger, thus leaving Thane unspoilt for future writings.

*ahem* since finishing the book I still stand by this remark. Maybe a chaste kiss but how could she spend time with him after what happened at the lake?

Tera. I don't believe it. I don't feel that she could walk around as the janitor looking the way she did. I'm not saying she should go, I just think the initial description should have made her seem less beautiful or that she was trying to hide her appearance. Supermodels on mop duty? Not likely.

Now I will say I was thoroughly impressed by the plot twist. I would have let him get away but still, well played. When will book two be out? Can't wait to get started.

When I started this book, I noticed that there are many draws that snag you from the very beginning. Obviously, the first one you'll see is the cover. It's absolutely stunning. Then, if you're like me and you want to know what the book is actually about.. the synopsis will come next. And if that doesn't grab you, then the opening scenes will. If I didn't think that I was hooked into Angels of the Night: Discovery to begin with, then the first chapter definitely seals the deal. It adds a level of intrigue that isn't necessarily all revealed then, but it's something that gets trapped in the back of your mind through the rest of the story. BIG plus for starting things off with a bang.

After the initial opening chapter, the story slows down just a bit as you're introduced to Allison, her life and all of the characters that follow. The first thing that I absolutely fell in love with when it came to Allison was the fact that, yes, she's a teenage girl in high school but that in no way makes her an immature, damsel-in-distress type that we see in so many other stories where the main characters are high school students. Her personality is pretty kicking, her actions and reactions are genuine to her character, and everything about her screams that she's a great female lead for the story. Overall, I think my favorite part of Allison is her interactions with Darcy and Thane - it's all completely believable and there's chemistry there that draws you to those scenes more than anything.

While we're on the subject of the brothers... wow. Twins but polar opposites, yet you're still drawn to both in the story. I remember reading somewhere a comparison of Darcy and Thane to Louis and Lestat of Anne Rice's novel Interview with the Vampire - and I can totally see it. There's the dark and brooding, then the one who's trying to hold on to a little of his humanity. Though that's as far as the comparisons go because Darcy and Thane are most definitely their own persons - err, well.. vampires, actually.

The story is really character-driven, especially with the interactions between the brothers and Allison, but it's definitely not short of its own plot to drive the story as well. Angels of the Night: Discovery is full of history, romance, betrayal and let's not forgot what makes most good mysteries in a story - secrets, secrets, secrets.

If I had to say anything critically about this story, I would say that I find it did drag a little in spots (definitely not many!) and the POV-switching was a little confusing.. but neither was enough to deter me from the story in the least. The writing is nothing short of great, hooking you with wonderful storytelling and a great cast of characters to boot. It's a definite recommendation for all of the paranormal lovers out there. You definitely won't be disappointed.

Angels of the Night: Discovery

Bravo, bravo, bravo! It is going to be hard for me to put into words what I think about this book! As soon as I was finished reading it, I emailed Paula right away asking if she had book two done, praying that she did. She said no, but it's in the works. I felt deflated but there was nothing I could do about it.
As most of you know, my favorite character is the Vampire, I am so in love with them! Each time a author sends me one to read, I open it without much expectation of what they did with the Vampire in their book. I like to be surprised. A lot of them are 'typical' of the beautiful creature but once in awhile I come across a few that totally put new twists on them. That is what Paula did, she put an absolutely beautiful, imaginative, spectacular twist on this sometimes misunderstood creature that I adore so much. And when I find an author who takes my creature and really works hard at not making it 'atypical', I am so pleasantly pleased and excited!
Angels of the Night kept me captivated from page one, and with each page thereafter. I loved walking in Ally's shoes, feeling each emotion, each desire, each disappointment and so on. I have to say, out of all the books I have read on the Vampire, they have never been portrayed in this fashion and I found it refreshing.
I could tell you a bit about the book, but you can read that on the author's web home, and in other reviews. For me, by the time I got to the last chapter of the book, and I saw how it was going, I was so afraid and held my breath because I was praying that what I wanted to happen, happened BEFORE the last page appeared. When it clearly came apparent that it wasn't I actually was talking to myself and I couldn't get to the email fast enough to get a hold of Paula! She told me she would let me review book two, my heart was elated but I was also so disheartened because I felt I had to know where Ally was going next, and what she would have to do in order to follow her heart.
Paula Kennedy has shown wonderful imagination, creativity, and insight in Angels of the Night. I applaud her taking that extra step into making my creature of the night her own by using her own definition of how they should come across to the reader. It is very unique and it breathed life into what sometimes can come across as a cliche when talking about the Vampire.
I highly recommend this book to all audiences, no matter the genre. I without hesitation give it five stars *****

Let me start off by saying I fell in love with the cover and then when I read the synopsis I was even more excited to read this book. Vampires and a secret society that alone made me ignore everything and read this book in one sitting.

Allison has seen shadows stalking her for her entire life. Tired and scared of them she accepts an invitation from her dad to a secret society which is none other than the Masons. They have known about the existence of vampires and work together to eliminate the blood thirsty female vampires. When Allison goes to this meeting she meets the twins Darcy and Thane who are only alike in appearance. They work with the Angles of the Night and are charged with protecting Allison while they hunt down the females. But Allison in no regular human she is a mystic which makes her valuable to the vampires. They can feed of her energy and it makes them stronger. But what none of them expected was to feel an attraction to each other which is forbidden. So trying to work together and deny it proves all too hard for Allison and the twins.

Allison is a strong heroine. She accepts the existence of vampires and her role in the Masons to help destroy the females. I was blown away by how easy it is for her. She is a normal teenage girl and in one meeting her whole life changes. I don’t know if I would have that much strength at her age. Darcy and Thane maybe identical but that is where their similarities end. Darcy is your normal bad boy but has a heart of gold and clings to his humanity where Thane is smart and calculating. Darcy and Allison soon realize they have a connection even though at every turn Darcy is turning her down since it’s forbidden but he soon realizes he can’t live without her. But with the Masons and other vampires watching them it becomes clear that they will have to fight everyone if they want to be together.

Allison, Darcy and Thane drew me in and didn’t let go. Although Darcy is my favorite out of the twins there is something about Thane that draws you to him. He leaves you guessing through the whole book about his intentions right up to the end. Allison and Darcy’s love is so strong for one another that it left me breathless and wanting them to beat all the odds that says they can’t be together.

Through secret societies, vampires, blood thirsty female vampires, and a forbidden love Paula will have you falling in love with her world and begging you for book two when you are finished. 5/5 bats

YA Paranormal

Allison has always seen shadows following her and felt a bit different. Seemingly out of nowhere her father takes her to a secret society meeting where she is informed that her ability is needed to help protect humans. Dear old dad made me angry a few times but I guess he was doing what he thought best in the big scheme of things.

She meets the hot vampire twins, Darcy and Thane, and has attractions to both. Ms. Kennedy's vampire myth has a bit different twist than most I have read. The male vampires are the calmer of the species and the females are dangerous; violent with blood lust. There were several good twist in the story that I didn't see coming. There is a cliffhanger at the end but book two is already available, so no waiting.

I was somewhat frustrated with Allison's flightiness but then I think back to being that age and remember that we were flighty. Hormones are raging and sometimes you just didn't think clearly.
Allison has numerous things on her plate and trying to juggle all the new information and emotions are difficult. Book 2 looks to be a daunting adventure for Allison and her journey to follow her heart.
There are several entertaining supporting characters that I enjoyed.

There were some editing issues that were distracting. Overall this is an entertaining young adult paranormal.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Review:
"Angles of the Night" by Paul Kennedy was a really interesting mysterious world of Free Masons and Vampires. I believe Ms Kennedy did an excellent job with this storytelling using her imagination and such creativity to create such a read. I found this read very hard
to put down until I was finished with it. The story was truly very intriguing and at no point predictable. There are alots of twist and turns....so be ready for a ride.

The story was really put together with well believable characters: Allison(Ally)Webber, Graeme, Dad (Gordon), Mom, Darren Clark, Cassandra, Scooby, Max Wilson, Frank Wilson,Darius, Thane, Darcy and this list goes on and in the read you will get to know the rest of them. But the main characters Allison, Thane and Darcy will keep you deeply interested in this plot. Truly from Allison first meeting with the two brothers, .... who were twins, and being quite opposite... and vampires will draw you into this good read.

"Angles of the Night" is full of history, forbidden romance, betrayal and you will find there are loss of secrets that will be uncovered. I thought "Angels of the Night" was a book that you will not be disappointed especially if you are a Vampire lover. I would recommend this as a good read.

This book draws you in with a who did it, against the odds romance, and secrets. Allison has always thought she was different or slowly going insane. Seeing shadows move will do that to a person. When her father offers to take her to school but ends up taking her to his Masons building, shes intrigued. But when he tells her before they enter, that she needs to decide if she wants to hear what this is about or leave, of course she gets scared.

Allison cant believe what shes hearing, shes a mystic. Not only that, there are vampires living among them. They are offering to make her the first female Mason, in exchange she has to let the vampires draw energy off of her daily. And because she is rare, she will have 2 vampire bodyguards, twin brothers Darcy and Thane. There is a female vampire killing that needs to be stopped, and intel tells them she is someone inside the school. With Allison's power, she can make the twins strong enough to take out the vamp.

Many rules have to be followed, on both the vampire and mason sides. One of the biggest is, no kind of relationship can happen. But being together so much Darcy and Allison grow close fast. So besides trying to find the killer they have to hide what is happening between them. But someone is watching and knows more then they want others to know. Who can Allison trust?

I won this book in a giveaways and I am glad that I won it. It's a terrific book.

The heroine is likable and brave. The characters really drive the story. I really like the interaction among the 3 main characters... The story is about a teenager but I think all adults can read it and enjoy it...

This book was okay but really hard to get invested in the storyline. Here is why:

I didn't like the vampire mythology, it didn't work for me. It was really weird and didn't seem that possible, and not everything was explained. The author expected you to believe it because she said it. The main character, Allison, says she is a moron a lot and that doesn't help with me liking her. I didn't feel like I really got to know the characters. They felt so shallow with no depth. There were many type-os, repetition, unexplained concepts, and weird terms that didn't sit well with me. They kept pulling me out of the story. Without warning, the author switch point of view (POV). It made things very confusing, and then she only gave us two chapters of Darcy's POV, and it felt like it didn't flow with the story. There should be consistency with the POV change.

****Slight Spoiler Warning****
Another thing that really bothered me was the romance. I get making it a forbidden romance because people are more attracted to it, but I feel like the author backed herself into a corner with this one. It doesn't seem like there is a solution to this romance. No hope for the relationship equals why am I reading this story? Typically the solution is to turn the female into a vampire so they can live together forever, but in this mythology, vampire females are too crazy with bloodlust and can't love their male counterparts. At the end, it is said that they found a female that didn't have the bloodlust, but there is no explanation for it. It just seems too unbelievable.
*****End Warning*******

As of right now, I'm not interested in the sequel. Nothing is holding my interest to see what happens next.

This is an interesting take on the vampire myth, with light and dark male vampires working against the stronger, more violent and bloodthirsty female vamps (highbinders). With the help of a very famous cult, the light vampires are working towards a world where vamps and humans can co-exist peacefully...Overall, the distinctions between the vampire groups and the cult work well and form a nice base for the story. For me this was one of the biggest strengths of the book and I definitely think there will be more interesting stuff to come from this aspect, if it focuses this way.

Allison as the protagonist was fine, although I did blow a little hot and cold with her, just as she seemed to: lots of hormones flying around and she was easily distracted by any gentlemen with abs... Darcy and Thane were well done and I liked the interplay between them, which centred around Allison - however, there was a touch of 'insta love' about her reaction to the boys.

A good first book to get you into the series, with some interesting twists on vampire mythology - overall a 3.5* for me.
