Great resource to understanding how music in Baptist church changed in the 18th-20th centuries. This book is a compilation of several essays about various hymn books and their contributors more than a linear history of Baptist music. The last two chapters, however, give a great linear summary from pre civil war music to the 1991 Baptist Hymnal.

I would recommend reading the last two chapters first and then reading the rest of the book.
