Sometimes love comes into a person's life like a hurricane, fierce and powerful, sweeping up everything in its path. And after a hurricane hits, things are never the same. For Dr. Robert Geller, love is about to make its mark when Jennifer Allen enters his life--like a gift from the gods. A charismatic, ambitious cardiothoracic surgeon, Robert is a man of roguish charm who lives a life of privilege in an exclusive New Jersey enclave. But his high profile success came at a perilous price. He's trapped in a loveless marriage with an emotionally unstable wife and a ruthless and tyrannical father-in-law. With divorce not an option, Robert defiantly pursues Jennifer, an alluring and vibrant jewelry designer, and their passionate affair intensifies, ensnaring them in a web of danger, deceit and intrigue. This is a dark, romantic tale of one man's obsession to be with the woman he loves. It is a story that explores the extreme measures people will take to get what they want and the violent acts they will commit to hold on to what they have. It is a mesmerizing novel that lays bare the hidden depths of human nature, and the characters will hold you and haunt you long after you have read the final chapter. Tracing the currents of desire, author Joan Nelson has delivered a debut novel that establishes her as a powerful storyteller. Blending the high drama and lyrical prose of Alice Hoffman with the haunting sensuality and suspense of MJ Rose, Final Exit is a heart-pounding tale of love, betrayal and thrilling intrigue. Joan Nelson is an award-winning artist, who began her career as a fashion designer and went on to become a successful interior designer in the New Jersey metropolitan area. A long time lover of fiction, she drew upon her creative talents to craft a novel with the same flair and passion she uses when designing a dramatic interior or compelling sculpture-with heart, art and inspiration.
Joan Nelson, author of Final Exit: A Suspenseful Tale of Passions Unleashed, is an award-winning artist who began her career as a fashion designer and went on to become a successful interior designer in New Jersey. A long time lover of fiction, she drew upon her creative talent to craft a novel with the same flair and passion she uses when designing a dramatic interior or compelling sculpture—with heart, art and inspiration.
During the years she stayed at home while her children were young, Joan developed her talent as a sculptor in stone, wood and metal. Her sculptures have won numerous awards and were highly praised in national and international competitions. She also draws and paints. The following is a portion of a review of her sculpture from a Paris art journal, a commentary that Joan treasures because she feels the critique captures her sensibility and soul:
“It is a work both lyric and narrative at the same time, evoking gentleness and serenity. Her style translates well the goal of this artist, who looks to express the beauty existing in all natural forms; and that expression being created through the skillful use of wood and stone.”
When her two sons were in junior high school, Joan enrolled in The New York School of Design to study interior design. She is now the owner of Joan Eisen Interiors in Morristown, New Jersey, a member of ASID, NCIDQ qualified, and a Certified Interior Designer.
Joan’s design skills and creativity were on display in the 2010 Mansion in May Showhouse, a fundraiser for the Morristown Memorial Hospital. Her interiors have also been featured in Elegance by Design, Savvy Living, NJ Country Roads, Design NJ and the Record Homescape Section. See samples of Joan’s interior designs here.
In October, 2000, the New Jersey Star Ledger wrote an article about Joan and the home she designed for empty nester living. She was one of the first local designers to decry the excessive size and vulgarity of McMansion-style conspicuous consumption and urge homeowners to think in terms of smaller, more ecologically-friendly and beautifully detailed spaces.
Joan is a Jersey girl and has lived in the state all her life, with the last 25 years in the Morris and Essex county area. She is an accomplished gardener and her skills include creating curb appeal for residences and apartment buildings, a service she terms Property Enhancement. She is also an avid animal lover and a supporter of St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter. Joan is extremely proud of her two sons, Steven and Brian, and is a breast cancer survivor since 1995.

A very well written story that keeps you turning the page for more.
At it's core, this book has a good story. Married man meets beautiful woman, falls in love, and an illicit affair begins. Man and woman decide to run away together to start a new life. It's a story that has been done before, in many different ways. This book didn't bring much new or exciting to the concept, but it's still a solid foundation for a story.
The book flap mentions that the author Joan Nelson has a history of creative design, and this is evident in the book's vernacular. There are some beautiful descriptions of nature, jewelry and architecture. However, the author's flowery vocabulary and over-embellished dialogue also make Dr. Robert Geller, the books protagonist, unbelievable. Dr. Geller is a cardiac surgeon who loves gardening, kayaking and bird-watching? Even if I believed that a man could possess a breadth of interests so wide, it becomes more unrealistic when we consider that the Doc has all this spare time to engage in these pursuits. But most important is the uber-feminine way in which his inner dialogue and speech has been drafted. Joan's words are beautiful, but would seem more appropriate for a female protagonist.
I also struggled with the actual dialogue between characters. The lines didn't read the way people talk. It sounded over-scripted and unnatural and there were many incidents of fact-forcing, where details that would have been better suited for narration were instead thrown haphazardly into conversation. Basically, any line of dialogue that begins with "Did you know that ...?"
Dialogue was also difficult to follow due to the multitude of misplaced or missing quotation marks and other errors in punctuation. I received this book for free through a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway, and I hope that this story goes through a serious round of editing and proof-reading to correct the basic, but distracting, errors.
I was thrilled to receive this book from a Goodreads giveawy. The main character, Robert, has known success in his career as a cardiac surgeon. His marriage was a way to help him achieve that goal. Robert is used to getting what he wants, as are all his family members. It takes him by surprise when he meets a woman he has grown to truly love. The sacrifices he must make are nothing compared to the way in which his spirit evolves as he learns about himself, life in general, and the importance of those things he once took for granted. Final Exit is an enjoyable read, and I'd like to thank the author for touching on the intricate nature of the human spirit.
Final Exit isn't just another book about a man feeling trapped in a dysfunctional marriage who falls for another woman. This is a story of high drama and intrigue, and its unusual twists kept me eagerly turning the pages. Joan Nelson has a way of describing a scene so vividly that you can see it in your mind's eye. Anyone who likes romantic thrillers will enjoy this book.
I have received my book from the Goodreads contest. I am so very excited to start reading this book. I am going to have an amazing time this summer, reading some books I wouldn't have before. Thank you so much for this novel. I can't wait to start it.
