A couple of years have passed since the events of last issue. The time the Lizard people, the Topsiders needed after the SOS to start their invasion. Oops, they also missed the Solar system by mistake and appeared in the Vega System instead. Which, we are told, is only a mistake of 3.4%.
They are called Topides in the translation for some reason. And funny enough, that to me, after having read about them 50 years ago the last time, seems just wrong to me .
Thora and Khrest think the armada in the Vega System are their own people and they insist to go there. But it turns out, the Lizards had only captured one Arkonide space ship. So Rhodan decides to steel that from them. And all this is quite exciting. Written by Scheer. Interestingly Thora observes that for Rhodan it is Humans uber alles. And yes, that was a criticism at the time that the series was kind of nazi ideology with Germans switched to Terrans. Not completely ridiculous. 7/10
The next episode where we are told how our Terran friends actually get the ship is unfortunately boring. Written by Mahr. Deringhouse fools the blue-skinned Ferrons by using some blue berries to paint his skin, if you can believe that. And did no one find it strange that PR would have a ten year old girl in his service? 5/10
Finally a nice 3 year time jump, to get past some of the boring but necessary infrastructure work. And we get to go to a new solar system and make new allies.
After 4 books (8 novellas worth) of set up, we get a 3 year time skip that finally see some actual space opera action... After spending 3 years building up his base on Earth and Venus, and starting the Earth's space fleet (2 fighters so far)... the Third Power detects a fleet of ships invading the nearby Vega system.
Turns out they are the Topides.. Lizard like aliens that, while not as bad as the Mind Snatchers, are ruthless invaders that could easily overrun Earth.. if they jumped to the correct system. Perry and co, get embroiled in the war, and end up with some fantastic opportunities in the bargain.
There's some real dramatic tension for some of this one.. but only briefly. Things get pretty easy pretty quickly, even though all hope for a small moment seemed lost. After a great set up that went on too long and started to repeat itself, it's great to get back to new ideas and situation.
There was quite a bit of time in the first book with techno-babble to try to explain the pretend science which I could have done without, but overall my favorite since the first.
This is the last Perry Rhodan book that would contain two Rhodan novels, at least for awhile. The events in this book take place about three years after the previous novel. Rhodan's New Power has grown in power and there seems to be some sort of unification taking place among the nations of Earth. We are introduced to a new alien race/adversary in the form of the lizard-like Topides. As well most of the action takes place in the Vega solar system, which the Topides have invaded thinking it is our system and the location of the Arkonide cruiser. In the course of this adventure Rhodan gains both a new Arkonide ship and a technological marvel unknown to the Arkonides. He is also presented with a mystery as this new technology could not have been invented by the natives of the Vegan system who are using it. The book ends with Rhodan returning to Earth but fully intending to return to the Vegan system to deal with the Topides. All in all some good SF adventure/action fiction.
I'd give this one 2 and a half stars. It's not as good as some of the others I've read but was interesting. I thought things came a bit easy for our intrepid heroes in this one. They've just got too many advantages over their foes and that takes away some of the drama.
