Many people have found The People's Bible to be the most reliable Bible commentary series published. It's the laypeople's Bible down to earth, clearly written, easy to read and understand, filled with practical and contemporary applications. Each volume includes that book's complete text from the NIV Bible. The Christ-centered commentaries following the Scripture sections contain explanations of the text, historical background, maps, illustrations, and archaeological information. The People's Bible commentaries are great for personal or group study.
Genesis is the first of the five books of Moses and it unfolds God's work through the biographies of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and others. Starting with the words 'In the beginning...,' it presents the beginnings, or origins, of the universe, the human race, sin, death, and God's gracious work of bringing fallen humanity back to himself.
This first book of the Bible defines the faith of Christianity. Abraham was credited with righteousness because God credited him as being right with Him. Jacob was named Israel because he struggled with God and won. Faith is a free gift from God. He asks us to understand sin, confess our sins honestly, and believe in His offer of forgiveness. This is a tough gift to accept because humans have feelings and act in a selfish sinful manner, thus our need for a savior and the free gift that is brought to us to enjoy, while living on earth! The three patriarchs play an important role in God's plan. All three were faithful to God, yet had a human side that showed they needed a savior. At the end of their lives they praised God for what he had done for them. Joseph was blessed by God and forgave his brothers for mistreatment, a lesson for us all! (3rd Reading)
I started a Bible Through the Year group and this is the first book we covered. Was reminded of many different things. Added notes to my own personal bible. Group shared a map of the area where Genesis took place and also of the life spans of some of the people named. It helped to get a better understanding of the people, times, and interaction of God and His chosen people. First read in September 2011
