A History of Anthropological Theory

Rate this book
This overview of the history of anthropological theory provides a comprehensive history from antiquity through to the twenty-first century, with a focus on the twentieth century and beyond. Unlike other volumes, it also offers a four-field introduction to theory. As a stand-alone text, or used in conjunction with the companion volume Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory , Erickson and Murphy offer a comprehensive, affordable, and contemporary introduction to anthropological theory.

The third edition has been updated and fully revised throughout to closely parallel the presentation in the companion reader, making it easier to use both books in tandem. New original essays by contemporary theorists bring theories to life, and portraits of important theorists make it a handsome volume. Sources and suggested readings have been updated, and glossary definitions have been updated, streamlined, and standardized.

These types of books are often quite unreadable but this one was an enjoyable and enlightening read.

Good overview, but the definitions in this book were really not good. For most underlined terms, the book would talk about them as if you already knew what they meant, never giving a precise definition in the text. Although there was a glossary of terms at the end of the book, they were often one sentence long, not providing nearly the amount of information or clarity that I desired.

An invaluable and immensely readable text.

There are two types of anthropological texts: accessible to the general public, and not.

This is the former. :)

I do believe I will continue to reference this book for the entirety of my career, it is a good jumping off point to delve deeper into specific theorists that are relevant to my work and the works I engage with.

Great, short, introduction to anthropological theory. Hits the highlights in a way that you can explore more with theories that interest you without getting bogged down in long expisitions of theories in which you have less interest.

A great overview without being too dry and maintaining neutrality.
