Valentin
Une petite ville, une rue paisible; des enfants qui jouent au hockey, un chien qui essaie d’attraper la balle. De la fenêtre de sa cuisine, Stéphanie, 34 ans, vêtue d’un pantalon de jogging et d’un tee-shirt, observe les enfants qui jouent tout en finissant de préparer un copieux déjeuner. What happens when our needs are left unfulfilled in a relationship?
Fanny's boyfriend says she is too clingy, pushing him away with her mommy attitude. She rebukes that she has so much love to give, and wants to have his baby. Since that gets a big NO on his part, she gets a cat, regardless of his allergies toward animals. The situation soon escalades, and Fanny has to choose between meeting her emotional needs or staying with her boyfriend.
I love how the book has a humorous tone while making you ponder about your own relationship behavior. Sure both characters have flaws that hinder their couple, and the fact that it's difficult to pick one side over the other, makes the story more delicious to read. It feels real. The boyfriend did keep on given Fanny motifs not to commit further, and she did mother him too much (feeding him breakfast with a spoon and kissing his boo boos).
Compromise is never easy, but necessary for a couple to survive.

Bon, je sais que ce livre était probablement gravement exagéré, mais j'ai vraiment décroché quand les auteurs essayaient de nous faire croire que la fille est trop maternelle.... mais elle amène un animal qui pourrait tuer son chum à la maison. Évidemment, c'est une BD, mais ça n'a vraiment gossé et je n'ai jamais réussi à m'attacher à aucun des personnages (parce qu'on s'entend, le chum était beaucoup trop agressif envers ce chat, allergies ou non). Mais faut dire que je souffre moi-même d'allergies (pas aux chats, mais bon) et que si mon chum m'obligeait à vivre dans une maison remplie de pollen de peuplier (peu probable), j'assumerais immédiatement qu'il ne m'aime pas du tout pour me regarder souffrir volontairement ainsi. Et la fin........... Jésus Marie Joseph. Je suis toujours partante pour un happy ending, mais come on, ils auraient pu écrire une ou deux pages de plus pour pas qu'ils aient l'air d'avoir de graves problèmes affectifs.
Malgré tout, ça mérite trois étoiles parce que les dessins étaient fous, le chat était adorable (même si la fille avait un sérieux problème mental par rapport à lui) et c'était une belle illustration de l'influence que peuvent avoir les animaux dans une vie. Et clairement j'ai un biais négatif parce que mon amour des animaux est très limité, j'en suis consciente.
Malgré tout, ça mérite trois étoiles parce que les dessins étaient fous, le chat était adorable (même si la fille avait un sérieux problème mental par rapport à lui) et c'était une belle illustration de l'influence que peuvent avoir les animaux dans une vie. Des dessins tout en douceur pour accompagner une histoire qui donne à sourire, voilà qui ne pourrait être plus parfait; et c'est ce que j'ai trouvé dans Valentin!
Si Valentin se présente un peu comme une simple histoire de chat - la bête donne après tout son nom au bouquin - on trouve au fil des pages une histoire humaine, mature, parfois attendrissante et souvent drôle. Le ton du texte s'accorde d'ailleurs parfaitement avec les illustrations: les couleurs sont d'une douceur agréable, sans que le style ne soit pour autant enfantin.
Valentin présente surtout une histoire "vraie" : des personnages réalistes qui montrent forces et faiblesses, des moments parfois tristes, des hauts et des bas, mais le tout sans jamais sombrer dans un inconsolable drame. On sent de l'espoir et le désir d'être heureux dans chaque page, et la conclusion, bien qu'un peu précipitée (et c'est là, à mon avis, la seule faiblesse évidente de l'ouvrage), nous permet de clore le livre avec le sourire.
Au final, j'ai beaucoup apprécié. J'aimerais beaucoup voir une nouvelle collaboration entre auteur et artiste mais, faute de quoi, j'essaierai sans doute jeter un oeil aux oeuvres précédentes de Pascal Girard.

Cette bande dessinée publiée par la maison d'édition La Pastèque surprend d'abord par ce fin trait de crayon et les taches de couleurs qui le submerge. Mettant en scène des anti-héros dont la vie est bouleversée par l'arrivée d'un chat, Valentin, cette bande-dessinée m'a émue. Dans sa simplicité elle touche quelque chose qui relève de l'universel.

J'ai adoré! C'est l'histoire d'une femme qui adore le nouveau chat de son amie. Cette amie doit quitter le pays pendant 1 an et laisse son amie s'occuper de son chat, Valentin. La nouvelle maitresse de Valentin est très contente de pouvoir s'en occuper pendant un an, sauf que son copain est allergique aux chats. C'est une BD drôle, charmante et les illustrations sont superbes.

La fin est un peu rushée, mais c'est bien bon! J'aime beaucoup le personnage de Fanny. J'adore les couleurs à l'aquarelle, ça donne un très beau cachet, comme une impression de douceur.

Tremendous. Instant consideration for my top 2% shelf that could surely make it- I envision myself mentally referencing parts of this as an ideal in matters of story and the art will stick firmly because he introduced my sensibilities to an advantage of water-colors with which he captivated me within its uncanny execution.
Imbibe the heady brew devised by a dedicated and conscientious character draftsman! The architecture of his cast positions them within overlapping degrees of separation to optimize interactionary incorporation with regularity and relevance- all resulting in smooth dialogue unhindered by narration.
Zero narration impresses me tremendously. I'm rarely thinking about the necessity of whatever applications of omnisciency I'm reading (unless they're forced or awkward) but a drastic number of my reads wouldn't have "needed" any box-slottery had the writer engineered it more presciently.
The populous and setting are 100% organic- there is no artistic license injected to grease plot mechanics. It's so natural that you could walk through the panels and interact seamlessly with everyone and everything just as you do anywhere else.
Most importantly to the themes of this work: In the specific and tenuous matters of emotion, decision-making and personality Yves invested the time and intelligence that he needed to construct people who entirely make sense- even when they're acting nonsensically.
The ending is like getting finished off in the ring-> the last five pages hit you hook>hook>cross»cross» then a dominant straight KO.
I took Pascals' art seriously in the same fashion. I had read four of his solo books so I happily expected his welcoming but distinctly blurry style but by page five I had realized that he would carry my attention no matter the script.
The hidden treasure was Pascals' attention to food. Favorites of culinary Quebec are discussed in dialogue and all of the large boxes characters take from restaurants to-go and all incidental snacks scattered in the background are carefully labeled to give us a feel for what's eaten in their locale.

Fanny and Romeo is a cute graphic novel about two lovers both struggling with adulthood and maturity. Fabien doesn’t feel quite ready to have children and fully commit himself in his relationship, and Fanny really wants children, but isn’t a very mature adult. When Fanny starts taking care of Romeo, a cat that Fabien is horrifically allergic to, their personal and relationship problems come to a head and push them both to start working through their issues. In fact, it is only when Fanny leaves with Romeo and starts to learn to support herself that the two find themselves able to reconcile. The story is short and sweet, and the two characters so clueless and stubborn at times that you can’t help but feel that they could be real people.
Also, I read the translation of this book and must commend the translator for such natural feeling dialogue. Not all translated books flow so well. I look forward to comparing this book to the original French version.

Pascal Giraud teams up with comic actor Yves Pelletier for this romantic comedy of a graphic novel. Girard’s art is often quite dark and heavy, but here he employs a light, loose drawing style combined with watercolor washes. It gives it a much more domestic, cozy feeling. The art reminds me of New Yorker covers from the 60s and 70s. Fanny lives with her boyfriend Fabien. Fanny desires a child, Fabien wants to wait until they have more money in the bank. Fanny ends up through a series of misadventures taking in Romeo, a friend’s cat. Romeo seems to take the place of the children that Fanny wants but doesn’t have. But Fabien is allergic, and the couple have other problems. It looks a little like Fanny will leave Fabien for Romeo. That’s not exactly what happens though.

This was so much cuter than I thought it was going to be. The relationship between cat and human was super well done 😻 However, the relationship between the couple as well as the exs showing up here and there, was great. The art fit to the story perfectly, the story flowed so well, I couldn't put it down.
Also, the author either has allergies or spent a lot of time with someone who does. The way conversations went when the character had allergies to the cat was on point!!

Meh. Certains morceaux sont mignons, notamment ceux avec le chat, adorable forcément, mais... à la fin, je n'ai pas vraiment l'impression d'avoir "reçu" quoi que ce soit de ce livre, c'était juste... pas pénible à lire.
Les plus: vision amusante de notre vénération des chats, québec contemporain, relations de couple.

Les dessins sont doux, le sujet de fond n'est pas forcément très drôle (envies d'enfant, soucis affectifs, etc) mais ça se lit bien (une fois la surprise passée de lire du québécois ahah) même si l'ensemble ne m'a pas subjugué. (La fin est très rapide notamment..) Et Valentin le chat est mignon comme tout 🐾

Pucha la novela gráfica iba tan bien, pero no me gusto el final :c
Aunque es un final inesperado, me sentí super identificada con la protagonista en un principio -solo al principio y cuando conoce a Valentin-
¿Quién no se convierte en esa persona que ama a los animales? y la relación crece, se forma un vinculo más grande, una los empieza a poner como su prioridad, solo se esta preocupados por la mínima molestia que puedan sentir y todos los dones afectuosos que están dormidos frente a cualquier humano salen en presencia de la mascota, de ese ser vivo, que se vuelve el centro de tu mundo y al igual que cuando personas se vuelven padres y muestran con pecho de paloma la foto de su retoño: así esta una pero con las mascotas.
Esa parte me encanto, además que las acuarelas son hermosas.
Valentin es un pillin jjjj me dio risa esa parte, es típico de un gato.
Lo pueden conseguir en la biblioteca de Santiago (si son de santiago).

Ilustraciones preciosas, una novela gráfica que habla del amor, el compromiso y al mismo tiempo la libertad y la independencia. Me la encontré en la biblioteca y la he disfrutado mucho, un libro en otro formato que agregar a mi lista de libros sobre gatos, ojalá la consiga algún día para agregarla a mi colección 🥰🥰

J'ai toujours aimé la BD et celle-ci m'a particulièrement plu. Les illustrations sont très jolies et vont bien avec le style de l'histoire. J'ai beaucoup aimé la légèreté du livre malgré les problèmes que vie le personnage principal au quotidien.

Vraiment trop cute comme lecture. Les dessins, les personnages, LE CHAT, magnifiques. La fin est grandement décevante, par conte. Stéphanie et Fabien méritent tous les deux mieux comme partenaire de vie. Oui, d'un côté comme de l'autre. (Faut lire pour comprendre, I guess!)

J'ai adoré cette BD, moi qui vient de me séparer, j'ai trouvé cette bande dessinée drôle mais aussi sensible. Le besoin de donner de l'amour de la protagoniste m'a permis de m'identifier rapidement. En plus, j'aime tellement les chats!

I am giving this an extra star because I was able to read it with relatively little effort in French but it was basically having to choose between your boyfriend and a cat and haven't we all been there guys. HAVEN'T WE. *le sigh* Also I think Pascal Girard is a delight.

J'ai beaucoup aimé les illustrations de ce roman graphique, tout comme le fait de découvrir des expressions québécoises, qui m'ont fait sourire.
Concernant l'histoire, elle est mignonne et humoristique. Je n'ai pas toujours apprécié les représentations des femmes et hommes, cela reste très genré.

J'ai vraiment adoré les illustrations, mais j’ai été un peu déçu par la fin. J'aurais aimé que Fanny profite plus de son indépendance.

Est ce qu'un chat peux bouleverser la vie d'un couple? Et bien il semble que Valentin pèse très lourd dans la vie de Stéphanie et Fabien. Une belle BD avec une histoire légère

J'ai pas accroché du tout à l'histoire. La fin est trop facile et même si je peux comprendre certains choix de Stéphanie, il y en a d'autres que j'ai trouvé bien trop irréaliste.
