This was not the easiest read; Weintraub is (was) old-school, and the historians whose work he is profiling were even more old-school. Weintraub was one of those campus gods; undergraduate students would line up outside on the quad the night before registration for a chance to get into his Western Civilization class. (The "culture" referred to in the title is civilization.)
