This was a good story, set in one of my favorite time periods, the late 19thc. Both the H and h are likeable characters, and they never go too far with misunderstandings, quarrels, etc., and when there is a problem, they resolve it pretty fast, with none of those long periods without speaking or a runaway h. There's the OW that causes some trouble, but that doesn't go too far, either.
The political storyline was good, too, with the mystery of who the troublemaker is. (Sometimes I guess, but not this time.)
Not a great romance but worked fine for a vacation book. None of the characters particularly stand out, but it was a nice mix of pleasant people to root for and bad guys you wanted to see fall. I am not a fan of stupid misunderstandings but most of the ones in this book were resolved within a chapter or two at least. The last one continued much too long for credibility "in story," but the reader does not suffer along with the heroine so it wasn't that big a deal.
The author makes a few social statements, but she does not do it by turning her characters into annoying ranters or complete anachronisms so I was fine with it.
