I decided to purchase this book because at the age of 41 my life has been plagued by Social Anxiety Disorder and I am desperate to do something about it. I have had this disorder for as long as I can remember and I think it was the main reason why I went through years of bullying at school. Social Anxiety Disorder is a horrible thing and it makes the most mundane tasks seem like pulling out your finger nails one by one.. I came across this book at Amazon and decided to give it a shot.
It comes complete with a hypnosis CD which is a fundamental part of this book's Confidence programme. You know what, this book is the most important thing I have ever read. After just a few days I felt like a new man and although I have lost my beautiful cat 'Jubilee' this week, I have made tremendous progress. I know it sounds a little bit dramatic but I literally feel like I have been reborn since I started to read it. My Social Anxiety was getting worse and I couldn't even walk down a corridor at work without feeling very very low and like my head was about to drop off.
I don't know if it is just me but I really think that my social anxiety disorder is treatable for the first time. I can't afford private treatment so this book has been a Godsend. I literally feel as if I have become a new man after spending all my life living like a half man. There are various techniques that Paul teaches in the book and one of those is aimed at releasing our natural confidence. Because of this book I feel like I have taken off a mask and for the first time in my life I am beginning to feel happy. I also sense that people at work are beginning to look at me in a new light and I hope to practise these techniques and to finally get rid of my anxiety disorder.
If you are suffering from a lack of confidence or Social Anxiety and Shyness I would encourage you to make this book your next purchase. 5/5

Very interesting book by my favourite Paul McKenna about how to be more confident, set and achieve goals including big ones in our life. Everything is here clearly explained and there are practical exercises to do in each chapter. The book is very motivational. There is also CD included. I will return to this book for future reference.
I was quite sceptical to begin with in regards to this book but after reading it in it’s entirety I was rather impressed. Paul McKenna has honed in on a concept that is neither new nor extraordinary, it is simply a concept that so many of us can not seem to master. That is being motivated enough to make a conscious choice to believe in ourselves. So often in the western society that we live in it is acceptable to simply settle for a 9-5 job that pays $50,000 a year however more that ever before we now realise that this is nowhere near enough to survive the way we desire. McKenna usus simple concept’s to attempt to remind us of our potential and I for one am grateful for the reminder. Without it we would all be leading mediocre lives. A must read for anyone that is dissatisfied with “the man” running his life!!
It was ok. If you're looking for a book with a few techniques on how to train oneself into becoming more confident, you may give this one a go. His advice to instant confidence varies from visualising oneself more confident to tapping different body parts to overcome an unpleasant feeling like anxiety. The book comes with a CD, but I can't say much about it as I haven't listened to yet.
My primary focus was on getting an overview of the processes of becoming more confident backed up by scientific papers. The book unfortunately didn't meet my expectations as it isn't a scientific book and feels too thick for that little information.
McKenna is quite vague in quoting his sources. There's lots of random "There's been a research once, ..." "Dr Richard XY once said in his research ..." without providing a bibliography or any annotations. The choice of the quotes is pretty random too - from inserting quotes from Aristotle, Churchill, Ghandi and M.Luther King to quoting Cher, Pele and even including a quote by ...wait for it ... anonymous (?) Oh, good old wisdom from the anonymous :-)
Even though, my overall score is 2 stars, I still believe it'll come in handy to some readers. I'll put the book aside into a pile of give-away books.
I found this book a nice quick read and it had some great quotes and techniques scattered throughout as well as a very relaxing and helpful CD to boost confidence. The main technique that I found the most beneficial was the gradual confidence boost where you imagine that in front of you is a slightly more confident you and you step in to that self and feel what that's like, then see in front of you an even more confident you and the process keeps repeating. I have used this technique with quite a number of my hypnotherapy clients and all have mentioned how effective it was. I have read most of Paul McKenna's books - not to help myself with issues but to glean any useful bits of information and techniques as I am a fellow hypnotherapist. The book is great for people new to hypnosis, who want to boost their confidence, motivation and make changes in their life. I think we all need a little extra confidence from time to time so I personally think that everyone would benefit from reading this book.
The content of this book is really insightful...if it's the first book you've read on the subject.
If that's not the case, you'll find that alot of the material is just re-hashed from other, more established authors. While reading through this I mostly had a sense of deja-vu, and that the time spent reading would better spent on other books.
However, I did get some use out of the CD. Paul's vocal patterns are very relaxing, and the positive affirmations amongst other things are certainly an aid to establishing a positive self-image. That's where the 3 stars come in, anyway.
I have read this book 3 times. The first time I read it I loved it, but the more you dive into this genre of book you realise its the same information in nearly every book. You just have to stop reading them and start practising what they teach! Some very simple but effective techniques included in this book. Well worth the read. Its not "instant" confidence - you must put in the work, but it is worth it.
Great self help book, read it in an afternoon and has helped with my self esteem issues over the last two days. Would recommend it for anyone, no matter how confident, as it’s got some great techniques for focusing and not getting distracted by everyday worries. 5 stars for what it is
This book in itself, is good, and if you haven't read any of his others then you will get a lot from it. Definitely worth reading. I'd also suggest NLP.
His books are much better than seeing him live! I've always loved his *work*, and being trained in hypnotherapy Myself, I was really excited to go to one of his events a couple of years ago. After knowing what he does for so many years, I was genuinely horrified at the rubbish event that was padded out with immense repetition with getting a member of the audience to participate in an exercise which Paul stretched out to the max with breathing techniques, and the bare minimal everyone attending no doubt knew. There were multiple people who got up and left and I doubt it was for an emergency. I was tempted to go too but persevered, total waste of My time.
However, his books, including this one, are much better; no doubt because you are the one participating, and they do help do what they say, the added audible is always very good. Take away point: If you've read the books you don't need to go to a seminar. His longer, teaching/qualification courses will no doubt be packed full of information if it's a proper training course, I only went to a 2 hour talk but it rehashed the books.
It's a very good selection of strategies and exercises that anyone can do. They are mostly based on creative visualization so if you're not into that, might be difficult to apply. It is very easy to read and and apply for a quick mind hacking. The book is also a good reference if you're in the coaching industry.
Well, it started amazing but i don’t know what happened after the first four chapters. I felt like I’m reading the same thing over and over and honestly it’s all about imagination, I don’t think I will ever read anything from this author again.
It was a good book, gave me a few tips that I might try but other than that it's a normal book, please be warned there is a chapter where abuse is talked about so if you don't wanna read something like that I say skip chapter 22
Mr McKenna looks so sterling on the cover of this book, don't you think? Alas, confidence does not equal excellence.
Part 2 of this book features the meat and potatoes of such books: goals, action, belief, planning, etc... but the meat of this book is confidence and that concerns belief and takes up all of part 1, which is the bit worth reading.
The key or core or essence of this book is the five minute daily confidence workout on pages 98-104. Everything else is massaging the reader to feel better for having bought this book.
However, the five minute daily confidence workout (henceforth to be called 5MDCW) is excellent, and should probably be photographed by someone in a bookstore and uploaded to the internet so that nobody else need read the whole book to find out that the 5MDCW is contained in a mere 6 pages.
PS - Ignore the hypnotic CD, by the way. If you don't desire to become confident, a CD will not help. And if you DO desire to become confident then you probably don't need it.
I'm not going to rate this as I didn't read that much of it so rating it would be unfair. Paul McKenna is really good though I have used his books and CD's before and they work. The CD which comes with this book if brought worked for me during a time when I desperately needed help. It definitely gave me confidence I didn't have before or perhaps it just unlocked confidence I've always had. I can't say much about the book having not read that much of it but the CD is brilliant if done routinely. So if you want more confidence to do and overcome things then try this, it worked for me CD alone.
This books is fast and easy to read , i would say it will take you maximum of a week to complete. The author is an NLP Practitioner and as such all the confidence techniques are more or less NLP based. This makes them highly effective if done correctly.
I have done a few of them for 2 weeks and saw a difference and thus will continue doing them. If you lack confidence or just want to be more pumped then this book is for you. The way I did it is by reading first the whole book and then 1 chapter every day with each exercise.
I found the book almost totally useless. There are a few interesting exercises in the book. Other than those what author tells is a very low quality repetition of what authoritative books tell on specific topics of self-improvement.
But exercises might really be helpful to some people. At the end, the author seems to help many people face to face using these techniques.
I was at a crossroads in my life, and after listening to this NLP Audio CD for a couple of weeks, I bagged myself a new job, in a new city, and started a course in Music within the following 9 months. I was very skeptical of the NLP, but found the book useful, and the audio-file on my iPod, definitely helps me get to sleep more easily at night. I'd recommend this to anyone in need of direction.
Just finished this today. It's early days and I haven't been able to spend time on the techniques but I think it's been a bit helpful. I am going to read it again taking more time on each chapter and see what happens.
