Fannon's book is pretty awesome, especially considering few if any such books existed when it was written. My only complaint really is that it doesn't cover a broad enough range of games. That might be because the author's exposure is limited to the mainstream shelf, or perhaps that was by design. I don't know. I might be an indie snob too. If you like RPGs this gaming overview is a great addition to your collection. Definitely if you want to get into gaming this might help you select a popular (old school) RPG to buy. Or am I dating myself here?
