রালফ ফিচ ভারতবর্ষে এসেছিলেন মূলত এখানকার বাণিজ্য সম্ভাবনা খতিয়ে দেখতে। তখনো মুঘলদের শাসন বেশ দাপটের সাথেই চলছে। লন্ডনের চেয়েও বড় শহর দিল্লি-আগ্রা। ইউরোপীয়দের মধ্যে পর্তুগিজদের প্রভাব পড়তে শুরু করেছে কেবল। এমন সময়ে ভারতবর্ষে পা রাখলেন তিনি৷ লিখা থেকে ধারণা করা যায় বেশ বিচক্ষণ লোক ছিলেন। সেসময়কার মানুষজন, তাদের সংস্কৃতি, ধর্ম এবং রীতিনীতি বেশ খুটিয়েই লক্ষ করেছেন। সেসব বর্ণনা ইতিহাসের বিচারে আকর্ষণীয় তো বটেই, নানান মজার ঘটনার সুবাদে পড়তেও উপভোগ্য।
