Everything's Coming Up Beatrix! was another fun Breaking Cat News collection following our daring reporters on more adventures.
BCN reporters Lupin, Puck, and Elvis are back with another volume of the news that's important to cats. From getting trapped in the attic to holiday celebrations, these reporters cover it all. And when the station's newest cat finds a home of her own, the BCN network continues to grow.
Breaking Cat News continues to be my favorite comic strip and gets better with every strip I read. For over ten years the cats of BCN have kept me entertained and I don't see that changing any time soon. The illustrations are wonderful and Dunn perfectly captures the energy cats have. Each cat has their own unique personality and they all come across so well. Plus with new stories the cast continues to grow and we get to enjoy more adorable cats as well as other animals.
This volume highlights Beatrix, a kitten found by the people who becomes the station's social media intern before eventually becoming a bookstore cat. Beatrix is simply adorable and I love how she brings out Elvis's proud papa instincts. I also really enjoy how she manages to pop up in other locations confounding the BCN crew as they can't figure out how she gets out. There were several great stories including in this volume from the benefits of libraries, to Puck standing up against the onslaught of leaves in autumn, to the cats camping out around a space heater telling stories. At the end of the book there were also some fun activities such as making your own bookmarks, making a little book, and building a reading fort.
Overall Everything's Coming Up Beatrix! was an excellent read and I would highly recommend this series to cat lovers.
I adore everything about this comic strip. And I have my own Beatrix, so I can't give it less than 5 stars. But what the heck, Georgia? I expected this to be all about Beatrix. She doesn't show up until halfway through the book, and then you've condensed the story, leaving out several weeks of strips where Beatrix is found out in the snow, being rescued by the Man, how she got her name, etc. Am I going to have to go to the website, copy those strips, and paste them into my book?? This omission made no sense to me!

I love these ridiculous cats so much. These books make me wish a) I could draw my cats, and b) I could come up with as clever of stories as Georgia Dunn does. I can imagine scenarios in their little heads, but it's usually more death and destruction than it is cute and cuddly.
OH MY WORD I LOVE THESE BOOKS! Filled with hilarious adventures, big news from little cats, and a sweet, silly stories from the point of view of some very opinionated felines! The way they see their world is AMAZING, and their adventures and anecdotes had be bursting out with laughter many times. I had to force myself to put these down to go to sleep. Humor, tender moments, ridiculous adventures, and pandemonium collide in this delightful artful graphic novel! <3
Breaking Cat News reports on the daily adventures at their house. Lupin goes missing for a bit when he finds the old dumb waiter opening, Beatrix the foster kitten keeps things lively, peeper frogs invade, and normal humorous life is happening along the way.
The missing Lupin series of comics features the ghostly residents of the manor house (they first showed up in book 3). They are nice ghost cats (they help Lupin out of a sticky situation) and a nice old lady ghost, but the fact that they hover around the family with the family being completely oblivious could creep some out. It took me until the end of the volume to figure out that Beatrix is a foster kitten. I don't remember her showing up in the last volume, she's just there in this book, and it isn't clear until the end that she's not a permanent member of the family. Overall, another fun collection of cat adventures that are entirely believable.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: None. The lady is in a bathing suit in some ending comics and shows a little cleavage, but that's it. Violence: Only bugs, food, vases, and red spots die. Ethnic diversity: The man and lady are White. The cats don't really have an ethnicity for the most part, though some speak Spanish and are addicted to telanovelas. LGBTQ+ content: Nothing specified Other: As mentioned, ghostly characters that could be spooky to some
I always love a visit with the cats of Breaking Cat News. They're such wonderfully distinct personalities. The strips are gently humorous with some very good story arcs (this one included the cats of RCO, ghost cats of Radio Cat, and probably a nod to RKO the old movie studio--Georgia does a lot of these little nods to classics) and my all time favorite strip about libraries. Don't let the long lag time fool you-- I started the book in September, mislaid it, and in a fit of picking stuff up (I won't dignify it with the term 'tidying up') I found it. So of course I sat down and read it, and let all the other stuff go. That's okay. As the saying goes, "Time spent with cats is never wasted" and that certainly applies to the cats of Breaking Cat News.
(And yes, I started reading the comic online back in the day, before it was picked up by Go Comics and long before the newspaper strip. But it even if you have read the strips day by day, it's lovely to have them all together so one can be immersed in the world of rowdy Lupin, sensitive Puck, neurotic Elvis, artistic Sophie, gregarious Tommy, and all the others.)
Welcome back to the world of Breaking Cat News, where in this volume we learn all about the origin of St. Catty’s Day (also known as St. Patrick’s Day), Puck embarks on an epic climb, the ghosts of the Big Pink House come to the rescue, Beatrix takes on responsibility for BCN’s social media presence and tales are told late at night around the space heater! There is of course much more to enjoy here, including instructions for making your own bookmark, book and reading fort, not to mention the importance of Best Cat Wrestling in the lives of our furry friends…. I make no pretense at “reviewing” any of Ms. Dunn’s Breaking Cat News comics - I am completely in love with the ‘strip and have yet to see a single panel that doesn’t make me happy. Her collections of comics can be picked up anywhere along the way, there’s no need to start at the very beginning (although “Breaking Cat News” *is* a “very good place to start”); better yet, try to get the daily comic into your local newspaper or find it on GoComics, you will be happy you did!
How? I grab almost anything with a cat for the kiddo, who is a little reluctant/so-so as a reader*, but likes cats. Mostly he reads these in the car by himself, sometimes out loud, sometimes reading and rereading the same jokes out loud.
* To be fair, I am of course speaking on a scale that privileges reading.
What? Breaking Cat News is (apparently) a series of daily comic strips, which starts from the premise that some otherwise normal cats are presenting news from their POV. So you get breaking news about food, or misunderstandings about seasonal holidays, or traffic in the kitchen. The house has several cats, so there's really an exemplar of most cat stereotypes/behavior -- though a lot of it is the cats pushing things off shelves.
Yeah, so? Entertaining but often slight -- or at least, what I really would've wanted wasn't a daily strip, but more of a graphic novel, so maybe that's just me needing to adjust my expectations. Still, I've felt more from other strips, whereas this just really evoked more pleasant smiles. (We do have about 4 in the series now in the house.)
Another delightful collection of comic strips from Breaking Cat News. If you know the cast, this collection picks up from where "Pucky, Prince of Bacon" left off. This book is perfect for beginning readers. Some strips are self-contained. Some are serials. The serials will keep kids turning to page to find out what happens. The colors are vibrant and, if you aren't familiar with the strip, could make you want to see it in your local newspaper. My only quibble is Beatrix doesn't show up until the back half of the book. Her origin story and her antics when she was introduced were hilarious and I wish that whole series had been included. Still, she is there and you get a very good idea of just what kind of cat she is. This is well worth your hard-earned cash and a spot on the bookshelf.
Everything's Coming Up Beatrix!: a slightly mixed bag, as BCN collections go. There're a lot of high-quality standalone strips and short story arcs included. The longer, more complex dumbwaiter-rescue arc in the middle is interesting but feels a bit out of place, tonally. There continue to be spots where the divisions between strips aren't clear. The oddest thing about this collection is the way it handles the story of Beatrix herself--I think this book is from the time when Beatrix was first introduced in the newspaper continuity, but since her introduction from the webcomic continuity was already collected in a previous book, large chunks of it are skipped here (without any explanatory notes). This edition can work for longtime fans, but would be a confusing place for new BCN readers to jump in.
Breaking Cat News is my all time favorite comic strip, and this book contains my all time favorite story arc—Peeptoads are Out! It also includes the Halloween story arc where Puck climbs to the attic through the dumb waiter and ends up getting stuck in a trunk. Can his ghostly friend, Tillie, rally the rest of the cats and "not quite live" reporters of RCO to help save him? Join Best Cat Wrestling for "Heck on the Deck!" You won't want to miss Elvis making first contact with the mythical mailman. Learn the cat yoga poses. Celebrate St. Catty's Day! Bonus material includes an art project for making book marks and a combined art/creative writing project for writing and creating your own little books.
Two of my favorite things in one graphic novel, cats and Halloween. Living where the news, and I use the term news loosely, is a daily disaster piece with goals to scare those who lack media literacy skills and to spread an agenda, this was a fun escape into news as told by cats. There's humor, adventure, and emotions here and after a series of disappointment reads this was a delightful way to wrap up the year. And while this is a graphic novel aimed at younger readers I think adults would find enjoyment in it as well.
While this is supposed to be more about Beatrix, she doesn't show up as a main character until almost the end. There were a couple of short storylines throughout, but most of the time were just short humorous jokes. The cats were full of adventure and added to the chaos of having two small children and various ghostly creatures. A fun time by Dunn.
The continuing comic series about cats reporting on household events as if they were news reporters. It’s still really cute and funny if you like cats and their antics. In this one, the kids are growing up, there’s a ghost adventure in the attic, Beatrix the kitten continues to be cute & then gets adopted, and then the crew has wrestling adventures with the cats in the ceiling.
Hi-jinks (or cat-jinks) are at an all-time high with the youngest feline member of Georgia Dunn's comic family. Little Beatrix tries new things, gets a job, and leaves her pawprint behind wherever she goes.
This series has a cat for every cat lover, from spunky Bea to lovable curmudgeon Elvis, and Bea’s pal Trevor for the dog folks. I look forward to this news! If you’ve ever had a cat in your life, tune in immediately! You won’t regret it.
Another book from this series!! Read it a bit out of order, but I especially loved the way Beatrix was drawn and written. (The huge paws were my favorite). Once again, didn't fail to make me laugh. I'm already reading the next 2 books!
These are adorable. I was lucky enough to get to read an ARC. The comics remain charming even several volumes in and I highly recommend if you’re a cat lover!
After the previous two books were heavy on the fringe narratives, this book is back to mostly being about kitties and their goofiness. We love this comic!
