A mysterious new fox! A daring mission! Glitter cannons galore! Your favorite fox cub siblings are back with an all-new wildly funny story that will have kids (and their grown-ups) laughing out loud.
Fox siblings Ted and Nancy love their new life in Grimwood––the forest where anything can happen. But the mayor of neighboring town Twinklenuts is on a mission to take over Grimwood and kick everyone out. Ted and Nancy will have to muster their courage, rally their friends, and show off their treebonking skills to save the home they’ve grown to love. Fully illustrated throughout and full of heart, laughs, and surprises, this is the must-read second title in the bestselling and fantastically funny Grimwood series.
Nadia was always destined for a career in illustration—as a child, she would doodle on her exercise books, while as a student she would doodle on her law degree notes. Then, when working as a journalist in London for pop music bible Smash Hits, she would doodle all the time on anything. The good people at Smash Hits didn’t fire her for doodling furry animals - instead they let her leave early to go to evening classes in illustration.
This was followed by a MA at the prestigious Anglia Ruskin University. Drawing and writing for a living is very much Nadia’s dream come true and we expect great things from this promising new author and illustrator.
From treebonking to picknicking in the woods, this book goes from funny to heartfelt and back again.
Grimwood is a magical and very hectic place to live. Sure thing, there’s never a dull day in Grimwood, not unless you want to live your entire life under a rock. But, for those ready to live life to the max, there is tree boking, Wildhorns Power Juice making, bumpy cars riding, theater group playing, and quite some dancing… Even better, you can participate in all those activities alongside foxes, squirrels, moose, bugs, ducks and bunnies ( I think I just left about half of the animals living in Grimwood out but don’t worry, you’ll get to know all of them when reading this truly entertaining book).
Ted is one of the inhabitant of Grimwood. He’s an orphan fox. He and his sister were abandoned by their parents in a den in a park in Big City. Ted, while happy living in Grimwood, still sends letters to their old den, wanting to find his parents.
The thing is, no place is perfect and Grimwood also has its dark secrets (duh! Did you see the name of the pace?). It all comes into play, when a mysterious stranger grabs Ted by the tail. Is the stranger a fox? Ted says, yes! but the rest of the animals in Grimwood aren’t so sure. They warn Ted about going out looking for trouble, or as Ted puts it, looking for mom and dad, but Ted won’t give up that easily.
I was happily surprised by this book. Intended for readers 7 to 9, it’s beautifully illustrated and really easy and fun to read. I particularly liked the many little notes and signs peppered along the pages that help the reader understand everything they need to know to fully immerse themselves in the story.
All in all, an excellent middle grade adventure book.
Last time round (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) the two heroic young fox siblings thinking they were orphans ended up in Grimwood, and found it a fine place to stay. Nowhere near as nice as other fine places, but still. In this book, however, they find a route to a place called Twinklenuts, whose dapper foxy mayor has got everything – including plans to take over Grimwood. There is only one way to settle the territory dispute – a major game of Treebonk. These books aren't as daffily silly as, say, Mr Gum, but they get to look in that direction at least, while providing fully rounded narratives. This one seems to take its fair time getting fully established, but when it does it's pretty good fun, the pages easily turning as we get caught up in the shenanigans. I might have liked more of a message, or purpose to it all, along the lines of the 'girl, let your reins on your brother drop' moral – even when this might show the fight to protect your home it does so for the silly reasons only. Still, the first book was a promising opener, this equally is a promising first sequel.
I loved reading Grimwood and I can't wait to introduce my children to this series, I already put the first book on hold at the library for us. The delightful cast of characters are funny, unique, and the whole story is just charming. This is the perfect kind of easy chapter book to help our transition from only graphic novels. I was cracking up and I know my kids will be too! The simple illustrations add to the story and humor. Ted's song about hoppin' through the forest has been introduced as a new hiking song for our family already.... they'll love it even more when I read them the book. We can't wait to travel back to Grimwood again some day.
Thank you to the Publisher & NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I enjoyed this story with all the characters within. The main characters were Ted an Nancy.
Ted an Nancy has left the big city to live in Grimwood. They are both hope that it's a safe place to live at because they have not adventure as far. There are other animals that live there. Soon all become friends. While in Grimwood they find an unknown place close by. This new place has things that are different to them. While there they meet other animals. But they soon find out that they are not as friendly.
This was a fun story to read. It had action, adventure and suspense throughout. There were laughs and giggles within. The illustrations went well with the story.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.
Ted and Nancy are loving life in Grimwood and when they discover an unknown land beside Grimwood that appears to offer the most amazing food, entertainment and more, it is appearing even better than ever as they can go between the two and get the best of both worlds but when they find a very sophisticated local coming to claim Grimwood as their own land it is down to the two to work alongside the other Grimwood inhabitants to save their land.
Well written, funny and one that kids will love, this is another Grimwood book which shows that this is a series which has the strength to run for a long time to come.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another master piece by Nadia Shireen. The original Gimwood had my daughter laughing until her body was shaking, this book continues to enchant with its magical world and loveable characters. Its a must read for anyone who enjoys a delightful adventure that's funny and heartwarming. We can all learn from Ted and Nancy about cherishing places and people we hold close, and standing up for what you believe in.
This is one of those books that is supposed to be silly, funny and random and it is indeed, very silly, very funny and very random. I remember reading books like these to the kids I used to babysit and they adored them. I enjoyed it a lot. I kind of wish I read it on audiobook because belatedly I have heard the audiobook is fantastic.
This a great addition to the Grimwood family. This is the second book but you don’t have to read the first one for it to make sense because it has a recap at the beginning.
A very funny early chapter book for children with wonderful illustrations. It follows the story of two small foxes and their adventures in Grimwood.
Take this from a family of avocado lovers: if you have kids, get them this book and read it together. It is beautiful. It is so beautiful. The drawings are pure art and the story is sweet and beautiful, and it is also deeply meaningful. But even if a child is too young to grasp the deeper meaning yet (which most kids are), the story is still super beautiful. Also, avocados.
Book two continues Ted and Nancy's story as they make their home in Grimwood. Unfortunately, a sly fox comes to visit and works to undermine the peace. Nancy is suspicious from the start but Ted has to learn a difficult lesson on seeing beneath the surface when people appear too perfect. In the end, Nancy and others save Grimwood and work to restore Twinklenuts as well.
I could read the Grimwood books all day long. They’re quirky, hilarious, and so darn sweet. 3rd-5th graders will just laugh so hard reading about this crazy cast of characters and their antics. Ted & Nancy’s letters to their parents get me every time. xxx
We're nowadays huge fans of Grimwood. Hilarious things happen to the quirky characters. The main story is a secondary reason to read the book as the point to us is more in the sudden weird statements. One of the few books that keeps the reluctant reader entertained.
I totally recommend listening to the audiobook version of this with Adam Buxton's incredible narration. Sharon the Party Crow and her glitter cannons are a particular delight.
Great sequel to the first book in the series. I read this at bedtime with my 7 and 9-year-old children, and we laughed so much. We love this series by the author.
So this was a cute read 🦊 I initially bought this book because helloooo: it has foxes! ♥️ it even has foxes on the side of the book for the painted edges so obviously I had to have it. Anyhowwww, the book was funny and cute 🥰
I found out afterwards that this was the second book in the Grimwood series but that didn’t bother at all. You can easily read this book without having read the previous one. It was a fast-paced book, delightfully decorated with illustrations fitting with the story. I thought this was a very loveable story. Oh, and also.. Mr. Silver is kind of an ass 😌
