Article first published as Book Review:Final Deceit: Future Imperfect Book Three by P.I. Barrington on Blogcritics.

In a third installment of Future Imperfect Book Three, P. I. Barrington brings to a close the final saga of her gritty and suspense filled trilogy in a futuristic world. In the previous book, three of the Las Vegas Police force personnel along with a news anchor, were lost underground after an internal power struggle within the New Creation Religious community. They were all present when a bomb went off, causing the cave in, killing hundreds of those present.

An intense rescue operation is underway, with Charlie Bowman, the Las Vegas Police Chief in charge. At every turn, his old nemesis mayor, John Long, puts his operation into jeopardy. Long’s daughter was kidnapped and impregnated years previous, and he chose to blame the police force instead of the actual perpetrators. His animosity only continued to grow as he made the choice to lock his daughter away from the world in a facility, due to her mental state after her rescue. She absolutely believed that her baby was put there by an alien and no amount of therapy could alter her thoughts.

However, there is more to the situation then Charlie is aware of, there are secrets that John has long held that could shatter the very city they are both trying to save.

In addition, as the power struggle goes on above the cave in, Payce Halligan, along with Gavin McAllister and Nick Kinkaid are buried in the rubble but manage to escape serious damage. Payce and Gavin are separated from Nick who was last seen with Amy Strand the news reporter. As they try to rescue themselves, they actually find themselves getting deeper into an underground compound that is well developed and full of equipment , years ahead of that which they are used too.

As another collapse of the underground occurs, Gavin is lost and Payce is found by none other then Logan McKaye, the young intern that had saved her from her previous encounter while in the hospital. But something is not right about the whole situation, he refuses to help her look for Gavin or her other friends, and he drugs her, making her more malleable to his commands. She is unable to help herself and follows his instructions, and yet she is devastated at losing Gavin.

As time runs out, our friends are only getting deeper; will Charlie Bowman find them in time, before John Long calls off the search? It is essential that hey receive food and water as well as air, but can he find them all alive or will he have lost them in his attempt at rescue? What is the truth in a scam that is stranger then fiction, and will Payce lose Gavin just as she realized her feeling for him?

In Final Deceit: Future Imperfect Book Three, P.I. Barrington has only added a layer of intrigue to an already dangerous situation. She has continued to build on her characters, evolving them and yet keeping their same gritty attitudes from her previous work.

She has pulled in some unexpected villains as well as heroes, and added another twist to the strangeness of the New Creation community, bringing en ending that has been anticipated by those readers of her prior two installments.

P. I. Barrington has built a futuristic world in her Trilogy that is interesting, close to the Vegas that we know but dryer and grittier, with debauchery and crime common place. Her Characters are interesting and the backdrop of this series along with her characters could make for a number of books set in the same place starring the same LVPD characters.

I would recommend this book for its thoughtful and unforgettable rendition of a futuristic Sin city, and for the characters that she has peopled it with. If you like Science Fiction, or just a good suspenseful mystery you will like this book. This was a great ending to an imaginative series.

This book was received as a free e-book ARC from the author. All opinions are my own based off my reading and understanding of the information.

Final Deceit – Future Imperfect Book Three – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat

“We’re here at the scene of last night’s devastating blast that literally ripped apart the huge auditorium owned by The New Creation religious community, destroying the building while a service was being conducted. We have no idea how many people were in that building, and no information on how many may be injured or even dead. If you’re looking at the second news drone, you can see the amount of destruction behind me – cars flipped over onto their roofs, the gigantic crater left by the explosion and enormous chunks of buildings just tossed around here as if they were nothing when, in reality each one of those must weigh five hundred pounds.” The reporter paused and the anchor woman asked, “Allen, do we know if Amy is among the missing?” “No, Donna. We have not found her yet. The officials here are trying to get together a list of possible missing persons and anyone who might have been in the area.” Donna looked into the camera eye. “Our own Channel Eight reporter, Amy Strand, may be among those missing at the unbelievable explosion that tore apart a major section of The New Creation compound last night. Her vehicle was identified in the terrible wreckage, and as of now she has not responded to attempts to contact her or her camera operator, Nicola Anderson.”

As Las Vegas Police Chief Charlie Bowman will soon learn, he is missing 3 of his detectives who he believes were also attending the service when the explosion took place. Thanks to Renton Wakeley, news director of Las Vegas’ Channel Eight, Charlie is even able to see one of his detectives, Payce, as the station’s drone circled over the crater created by the explosion. But trouble comes in the form of Las Vegas Mayor John Long. His dislike for the Vegas police department, and especially Charlie, is so intense that he will do anything to bring the whole department down, even to the extent of trying to force Charlie to call the rescue mission off and declare it a recovery mission. The search becomes even more difficult after a gas main is hit resulting in yet another explosion. Will Charlie give in to the Mayor? No way! He suits up and goes on his own rescue mission that takes him deep into the maze of halls and floor levels beneath The New Creation.

Police detectives Pace, Gavin and Nick, along with news reporter Amy are all survivors with one goal in mind…finding their way out. But unbeknownst to them all is the fact that there is one other person roaming the halls of the old underground military facility with motives of his own. Medical intern Dr. Logan McKaye once helped Payce escape from a slow death before and his wish now is to find her and save her again. His chance comes after the second explosion takes Gavin out of the picture and he is the only one left for Payce to lean on for help.

In P. I. Barrington’s Future Imperfect Books, I have tried to no avail to come up with the reasons for all of the events that took place in the first 2 books. Who is El Jefe? Who is Logan? Where do the snake carvings fit in? Who is Lars impersonating and why? These were just a few of my questions. In Final Deceit, she brings it all together and gives me the answers. All of which, I was totally unprepared for. This is one series of books that lives up to the final book’s name Final “Deceit.” I simply loved the series but do advise that to get the full effect of the story, read them all, in order.

Wow, P.I. Barrington does it again. I’ve been on the lookout for this third installment of the FUTURE IMPERFECT series, and the last volume was worth the wait.

As I’ve mentioned in past reviews, this series is not for the casual reader, even one who likes to pick up in the middle of the action. One would be lost. FINAL DECEPTION begins within moments of Book Two, with the New Order Creation auditorium in ruins after a bomb, and the futuristic Las Vegas in chaos. It took me several pages to refresh my memory and get back into the story, but once I was engaged there was no putting it down.

The LVPD has been after the mysterious El Jefe and his commanders running a religious cult, and controlling more than anyone ever realized, politics and events in the City of Lights. I enjoyed Barrington’s multiple perspectives as Police Chief Charlie Bowman desperately seeks to rescue his missing detectives -- Gavin, Nick, and heroine, Pace. The action takes us beneath the desert as did the other installments, into strange lairs littered with amazing sci-fi gadgets and gizmos. As the tension mounts, and the villains remained cloaked in shadows, all paths lead to a climatic, jaw dropping, “I should have known!” moment. FINAL DECEPTION is not merely a third volume of suspense but an explosive conclusion to a superb story that began with CRUCIFYING ANGEL (Book One) and ends tying up all loose ends, even those rattlesnakes, with panache.

Barrington’s gifts still shine: Her ability to create cool, believable sci-fi elements colors her story. Plot twists are clever, and she builds suspense like a pro. (By page eighty I was yelling out loud that I better not be left hanging. Incredibly, I wasn’t.) I was also happy to see the romantic subplot come to a satisfying ending. Gavin is a stubborn, proud hero that will make you grind your teeth but his devotion to Pace melts the urge to slap him a good one. Pace is as strong as ever. Her realization of her love, and her courage to share it, is enjoyable to experience.

FUTURE IMPERFECT is an amazing sci-fi series I recommend to anyone who enjoys action or adventure. It’s fun to read, and I’m happy to have found the closure and surprises I wanted in FINAL DECEPTION.
Any book with P.I. Barrington’s name attached will get a read from me.

Barrington pens an edge of your set suspense with "Final Deceit." Set in the near future, detectives Gavin McAllister and Payce Halligan find themselves buried under the rubble of the New Creation explosion. Will finding out the secrets of the New Creation destroy Gavin and Payce's chance at happiness?

Set immediately after book two, "Miraculous Deception" ends, the New Creation's above ground facilities are in ruins, but the underground catacombs are still functional. Payce, Gavin, Nick, Amy, and Logan MacKaye are trapped in the tunnels. LVPD Chief, Charlie Bowman, works around the clock to free them despite the opposition from Mayor John Long.

Charlie works hard to find the detectives. Payce, Gavin, Nick, Amy, and Logan also try to find a way out. El Jefe is still alive. He hires a female impersonator to try and throw the police off his scent.

Meanwhile, Matthew Long, the mayor's son, learns that his sister, Jemma, has escaped from the mental institution she was held in. Matthew is concerned for her safety, especially since she claims she gave birth to an alien's baby.

After a gas man explosion, Gavin and Payce's escape to the surface is made that much harder. Logan forces Payce to abandon Gavin on a precarious catwalk. Logan has his own secrets as he anxiously seeks out the snake decorations on the doors. When Payce and Logan finally confront El Jefe, will it spell the end of all she knows?

Barrington has plotted an exciting suspense with book three of the Future Imperfect series. The action keeps the reader right in the scene with the characters.
Barrington ties up the loose ends well leaving the reader with a satisfying conclusion. The only loose thread that kept me dangling, however, was Lars. I wasn't able to figure out who he impersonated.

Barrington uses a good economy of words to paint a futuristic world that offers bleak hope, striking a perfect mood for the series.

Gavin and Payce remain interesting as they run through a gambit of emotions - relief at being reunited and jealousy over Logan's involvement in Payce's life. The supporting cast is gritty and real while El Jefe is a fascinating villain who never falls to entertain.

The novel is sweet in romance between Payce and Gavin, and there are no love scenes. The story's ending will kept the reader riveted to the page. "Final Deceit" does not disappoint!

The Future Imperfect series goes out with a bang as Final Deceit, the third book in the sci-fi trilogy by P. I. Barrington, most definitely measures up to its’ predecessors, Crucifying Angel and Miraculous Deception, and in cliffhanger style, begins where Deception leaves off.

The year is 2032. After an explosion rocks the New Creations compound, trapping hundreds, not everyone is present and accounted for. Payce, Gavin and the others find themselves entombed beneath mounds of broken concrete and crumpled steel, hundreds of feet underground, and surrounded by total darkness. With Las Vegas Police Chief Charlie Bowman spearheading the search and rescue mission in a desperate attempt to save those trapped, the Mayor of Sin City has his own agenda. With a power struggle ensuing, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a search and recovery mission. Unfortunately for those trapped, one in the group is working to prevent them from ever seeing the light of day; and what does New Creations have planned as their ultimate and final act of retribution?
Barrington packs plenty of action and excitement into Final Deceit and leaves us with a surprise ending the reader won’t see coming.

Barrington’s colorful characters jump off the page with crisp, engaging dialog that propels the action and swiftly moves it along at breakneck speed. The characters are incredibly realistic and exhibit all the thoughts, emotions, and actions to make it easy for the reader to feel connected. We can’t help but root for Payce and Gavin and feel their unspoken bond to one another as they attempt to keep each other alive; or the constant but thoroughly humorous way in which Nick and Amy Strand playfully bicker like an old married couple; or the obvious disdain between Gavin and Logan as they fight for Payce’s attention. Final Deceit is quite possibly the most exciting book in this terrific sci-fi series.
