Fast paced and exhilarating, New Teen Titans Archives Vol. 2 is a refreshing combination of heroic action and human drama. In this hardcover volume, Robin, Raven, Wonder Girl, Cyborg, Kid Flash, Starfire, and Changeling must find a way to defend the world from super-powered invasion and destruction while contending with the everyday trails and tribulations of adolescence. Reprinting the earliest adventures of these celebrated teenaged heroes, this book features the Teen Titans' battle against the gods of Olympus, their deadly confrontation with the Brotherhood of Evil, and their first meeting with two of the original Titans, Aqualad and Speedy.
Marvin A. "Marv" Wolfman is an award-winning American comic book writer. He is best known for lengthy runs on The Tomb of Dracula, creating Blade for Marvel Comics, and The New Teen Titans for DC Comics.
These issues asked the question of "How can we give Beast Boy the most angst possible" and they really threw everything at the dart board and said "perfect"
this poor guy went through so much in these issues. I really like that it started to really break down and develop his character more.
I also was not expecting a whole plot point to involve Greek Gods but ALRIGHT I GUESS
Overwrought super-opera foolishness and I adored every issue. Well, maybe the Titans of myth was weak, but brother, I dig the Brotherhood of Evil story.
There's some good stuff here, the highlight being the revenge quest for the Doom Patrol's killers and the return of the Brotherhood of Evil. Theres also a lot of the superhero soap opera stuff that is just fine I guess. My biggest concern is how upsettingly large, hairy, and muscular Beast Boy's body is compared to his little baby-face head.
I don't know if maybe I'm just not into this series or older comics in general, but I found this dragging a lot. Toward the end when it was mission after mission it was interesting, but all the day in our lives stuff was lacking and kinda boring. Also, there was a lot of stiff that made me cringe.
The book starts to hit its stride in this volume, both visually and in the writing. The best story in this volume is the three issue arc about the death of the Doom Patrol.
If you just want to read old comics and don't want to run around looking for consecutive issues so that you can actually complete a story, these DC Archives are the way to go! I had to start with Volume 2 because the library did not have the first one. This collection is almost perfect, the only story I didn't love is the Mythology heavy one, even though it was a great plot for Wonder Girl, I like my super heroes battling on Earth. The rest of the books are full of great traditional villains and perfect soapy subplots like Wally West doubting if he should be a super hero, Raven wanting to feel more normal. Starfire becoming too vengeful, and Beast Boy wanting to solve an old family mystery.
At least my second time with these issues (maybe third). Wolfman and Pérez are really hitting their stride with this set. Great pacing, wonderful character moments, cinematic art that moves from panel to panel effortlessly. Almost a 5-star collection. The fate of the Doom Patrol and introduction of the New Brotherhood of Evil arc is probably the best in this collection.
