About the author

Daniel Pennac (real name Daniel Pennacchioni) is a French writer. He received the Prix Renaudot in 2007 for his essay Chagrin d'école.

After studying in Nice he became a teacher. He began to write for children and then wrote his book series "La Saga Malaussène", that tells the story of Benjamin Malaussène, a scapegoat, and his family in Belleville, Paris.

His writing style can be humorous and imaginative like in "La Saga Malaussène", but he has also written essays, such as "Comme un roman", a pedagogic essay."La Débauche", written jointly with Jacques Tardi, treats the topic of unemployment, revealing his social preoccupations.

Not full 4 stars, to be honest, more a 3.5 to my first Pennac's book

This was a really unexpected book, and endearing meta-novel.

I received it as a gift for my birthday back last May, but I did not read it until now because: a)I did not have time and b)when I had read the plot I immediately knew that I would have needed the right mood to read it. And so, now, here I am.

The first 50 pages or so were quite... strange. I really do not know any other way to describe it. The story of this agoraphobic dictator seems unreal, not only because its events are bizarre, but also because of the way they are described, in the dimension of the "perhaps": there is nothing that appears to be certain, everything seems to be still defined.
However, reading on, I started to appreciate the atmosphere of the novel, its indefiniteness, in particular thanks to the continuous transitions from the world of fantasy (the one with the story of the agoraphobic dictator) in the world of reality (the one from which the author is inspired, that is his own life). This journey inside the story of the dictator Pereira and its creation soon becomes an intimate journey inside Pennac himself, with Brazil as background, and the mechanisms that are set in motion in the moment of the creation of the novel.
As a reader, I always wonder what helps the author to create his new universe, and Pennac gives an answer to this, quickly underlining how real life and imagination can easily blend within each other. In fact, it becomes harder and harder to tell which elements are invented by the author and which ones really happened. The characters of the Double and Sofia are the perfect examples for this.

I recommend this book, even though it may need time to be fully caught in the rhythm and the sense of the narration.

Podľa mňa si touto knihou robí autor z čitateľa srandu. Veď aj jedna z postáv chce od samotného autora, aby napísal lineárny príbeh a nie labyrint. No je to všetko, len nie literárny príbeh. Metatext metatextu alebo príbehy v príbehu, ako len chcete. Dvojníci defilujú jeden za druhým, prezidentovanie ich rýchlo omrzí, miestami vás ich osudy bavia, inokedy nechajú ľahostajnými. Máme možnosť nahliadnuť do procesu autorovho procesu tvorenia a na jednej strane dokonca vymenúva všetky možné knihy, ktoré čítal počas cestovanie po svete. Asi to nie je must read, ani si tú knižku nepotrebujem vystaviť do knižnice na popredné miesto, ale pre tých, čo radi experimentujú s textom - nech sa páči :)

"A hojdacia sieť, Sonia. Hojdacia sieť pod verandou v Maraponge. Človek píše, keď nemá nič lepšie k dispozícii, hojdacia sieť je lepšia. Musel ju vymyslieť nejaký mudrc proti pokušeniu stať sa niečím. Dokonca aj proti pokušeniu reprodukovať druh. V hojdacej sieti vám prichádzajú na um všetky možné nápady a plány a vôbec sa vám nechce ich uskutočňovať. V nej som bol najplodnejším a najneproduktívnejším spisovateľom sveta. Hojdacia sieť je z neba visiaci štvoruholník času."

Something entirely new for me, and an entertaining novella expanded into a winding meditation by Pennac, who blends fiction and biography at a confusing pace. Once you get past this initial hurdle, the whole book is engaging. It was perhaps a little self-indulgent by the end, at least to this British reader (perhaps something lost in the translation from the original French) and the final explanation of the various doubles somehow straddles the line between striking an optimistic note for the future of democracy and hope for Terrasina, and ruining the most engaging part of the story with an unnecessary dose of reality/explanation.

Fantastična i zabavna priča, fantastična posveta, hommage, Chaplinu i Valentinu, priča o "banana republikama", puno dobrih misli, izvanredno "driblanje" čitatelja i bilo bi ovo jedno od najboljih djela koje sam pročitao, da ... da autor u priču nije umiješao svoje brazilsko putovanje, introspekciju, te popustio egotripu iskazivanja svoje široke educiranosti.
Uostalom to mu je u jednom trenutku zamjerio i vlastiti lik 😂 .
Nađite, pročitajte, možete neke dijelove i preletiti, ali nemojte odustati, vrijedi.

La force de Pennac, ce sera toujours son sens de l'humour et le don de conteur collectionneur d'anecdotes et autres miettes sur les chemins de la vie. Dans ce roman, l'auteur recycle ses expériences de vie au Brésil, dans le nord-est, une région aride et pauvre, mais si riche en expérience humaine et en superstitions et croyances. Il s'amuse aussi à se mettre en situation avec quelques-uns de ses personnages imaginaires, empruntés à la tête ou à la personnalité de ses amis et connaissances. Le hamac, son bureau de travail préféré, installé entre ciel et terre, juste assez tapis volant pour enflammer son imagination. Délicieux intermède pour le lecteur puisque le conteur s'abandonne aux confidences et surtout, ne cesse de relancer le ballon dans l'aire de jeu de la fantaisie en dépit du lourd portrait de tout dictateur qui se respecte...!

Am tras mult de cartea asta. Zile întregi în care citeam alte cărţi în loc să o termin , dar pot spune că într-un final a meritat. Sinceră să fiu, ultimele 50 de pagini au fost mai bune în opinia mea decȃt restul conţinutului. Nu pot însă nega nici faptul că am găsit nişte pasaje absolut superbe ici-colo.

“ Cȃnd scrii în lipsă de ceva mai bun, hamacul este ideal.Hamacul trebuie să fi fost imaginat de un înţelept ,ca remediu împotriva tentaţiei de a deveni. Ȋn el, specia renunţă să se mai reproducă. Ȋţi inspiră toate proiectele imaginabile, dar te scuteşte să-l împlineşti pe vreunul. Ȋn hamac, eram romancierul cel mai fecund şi mai neproductiv din lume. Era un dreptunghi de timp atȃrnat de cer.”

Un Pennac diverso, dal taglio più intimo e personale. Un Pennac insolito nello stile, nella costruzione della storia e della caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Un Pennac meno semplice, più ricercato nell'approccio narrativo. Un Pennac minore, forse, ma un Pennac minore è già di per sé un autore più straordinario e un essere umano più bello della buona maggior parte dei vostri favoriti, per cui. *scrolla le spalle*

Как-то раз, один романист лежал в гамаке и сочинял историю про диктатора банановой республики, которому гадалка предсказала смерть от рук толпы от чего тот стал агорафобом и нашел себе на замену двойника, бывшего цирюльником, а сам уехал кутить в Европу. Двойнику на глаза попался фильм Чаплина «Иммигрант» и он так проникся кинематографом, что решил бежать в Голливуд, предварительно воспитав другого двойника. По пути он изображал Чаплина, но в нём заподозрили Рудольфа Валентино. Наконец в Нью-Йорке он встретился и с тем, и с другим. Валентино проникся его историей и даже нанял в качестве дублера света, а Чаплин… Чаплин снял фильм «Великий диктатор» про еврея-цирюльника, который стал двойником диктатора.

Между делом, романист травит байки из жизни Даниэля Пеннака, препарирует «Великого диктатора» и рассказывает жене, что там происходит с персонажами, которые время от времени возлежат на гамаках, на этих прямоугольниках времени, подвешенных между небом и землей.

А что стало с диктатором? - спросите вы, а я отвечу: «Его разорвала толпа».

Роман интересен своей необычной структурой, анализом природы диктатуры и словом «конец» в конце, как и попросил один из персонажей.

Non ho ricordi chiari e netti di questo libro, dovrò rileggerlo. Il ricordo più vivido rimane la soddisfazione di mia madre che corre in libreria non appena scopre che Pennac ha scritto un nuovo libro. Che donna meravigliosa.

Fost eliberator si apoi dictator al unei republici bananiere din America Latina, Manuel Pereira da Ponte Martins detine toate premisele necesare unei perioade lungi si suficient de pasnice la carma statului, daca nu am lua in considerare faptul ca acesta sufera de agorafobie.

Dar de unde o astfel de suferinta nefericita pentru orice conducator, mai ales daca luam in considerare ca Pereira nu era agorafob din tinerete? Ei bine, aceasta molima cazuta pe capul dictatorului latino-american a luat nastere o data cu aflarea propriului destin de la o vrajitoare, acela ca va pieri sfasiat de multime.

Ce ar putea face un om care incearca sa-si evite soarta, in special unul influent ca Pereira? Evident, angajeaza o sosie si pleaca in Europa, acolo unde mana destinului nu este suficient de lunga si in cazul sau. Nu fac niciun spoiler atunci cand precizez ca nimeni nu scapa de propriul destin, iar Pereira va sfarsi asa cum este de asteptat inca din primele pagini.

Dar ce se intampla cu sosia? Anii trec, si ca orice actor, sosia se plictiseste sa joace acelasi rol. Asadar, acesta gaseste o alta sosie, apoi porneste in calatoria descoperirii noii sale pasiuni: cinematografia.

Povestea lui Manuel Pereira da Ponte Martins se transforma asadar in povestea sosiilor sale si a sosiilor in general, o poveste tragicomica asupra importantei acelei “câtimi” de diferenta inregistrata de la o sosie la alta.

Povestea uneia dintre sosii se amesteca cu povestea cinematografiei, trecand de la primele proiectii cu filmele lui Charlie Chaplin, la imaginea lui Rudy Valentino (despre care se spune ca s-a nascut in acelasi an cu cinematografia), la prezenta sosiilor la Hollywood, pana la filmul din 1940, The Great Dictator, in care Chaplin duce ridicolul sosiilor catre extrem.

Un element aparte al romanului scris de Pennac il reprezinta amestecul dintre fictiune si elemente autobiografice. Dupa incheierea fiecarui capitol al povestii dictatorului si a sosiilor, autorul isi acorda un capitol pentru a povesti modul in care a creat aceasta poveste, sursele de inspiratie si unele personaje, din perspectiva unui jurnal de scriitor.

An interesting read, with some very good parts within. I especially liked the way the narrative jumped from on direction to another...from one pace to another. That being said those same tendencies made the overall book hard to focus on as singularity and in my mind I'll remember it as more of a series of short stories pinned together by an underlying thread, which is perhaps where the Idea of a hammock comes in.

Leggendolo ho avuto seriamente l'impressione che Pennac, oltre il ciclo Malaussene, non sia in grado di andare, e questa favola onirica, non ha niente di carino, originale e divertente.

Potrebbe essere visto come un tentativo di uscire dalla saga che gli diede la popolarità, cambiando completamente soggetto... secondo me l'esperimento non gli è riuscito un gran che...

I almost quit reading it several times, but the fact that the chapters were so short encouraged me to continue. I started to sort of like it halfway through, and I found the ending very surprising.

Il più anomalo dei libri di Pennac che abbia letto fino ad oggi (cioè quasi tutti), anche più dello “Storia di un corpo” che pure non scherzava. Devo anche dire che, dopo qualche decina di pagine, sono stato anche tentato di mollarlo lì, perché mi sembrava veramente troppo didascalico, e un tentativo anche piuttosto malriuscito di raccontare una storia alla Garcia Marquez con venature di Alessandro Baricco (e tra i due non è Baricco il peggiore, sia chiaro).

Poi, per fortuna, la vicenda del dittatore Pereira finisce abbastanza presto, e prendono spazio tutta una serie di narrazioni parallele, quelle dei sosia ricorsivi (il dittatore che lascia il posto a un sosia che lo lascia a un altro sosia, eccetera) e quella dello stesso Pennac, che ha vissuto diversi anni in Brasile e dalla cui esperienza evidentemente in qualche modo questo romanzo trae origine. E in effetti i “siparietti” personali sono la parte più interessante: i vari bizzarri personaggetti conosciuti, la casa “stile Corto Maltese” in cui lui e la ex moglie abitavano, viaggi e impressioni nel mitico interno brasiliano, sconosciuto e temuto dagli stessi brasiliani che in grande maggioranza vivono sulla costa. Poi a un certo punto la narrazione della propria storia personale si intreccia con quella di finzione, soprattutto quando l’autore segue le vicende di uno dei sosia, che a sua volta si scopre sosia di Rodolfo Valentino e di Charlie Chaplin e arriva fortunosamente negli USA; e poi l’autore “incontra” uno dei suoi personaggi, una ragazza americana, Sonia, che a sua volta aveva conosciuto il sosia e poi, dopo essere stata nei servizi segreti inglesi all’epoca della guerra, era approdata a Parigi dove aveva continuato a vivere, a Belleville tanto per cambiare. Tutto il libro, come spesso accade in Pennac, è un pretesto per parlare d’altro, soprattutto di Chaplin e del suo film Il grande dittatore (che non vedo da moltissimi anni e in effetti ricordavo pochissimo). La cifra stilistica tipicamente pennachiana, quella della realtà apparente che si rovescia nel suo opposto, è riservata in un finale molto scoppiettante.

E qualche momento molto felice. In particolare ho apprezzato una pagina, che riposto qui: Pennac, la moglie Minne e Sonia sono al ristorante a Parigi. Sonia, come spesso fanno le donne quando vogliono tirare giù l’uomo di turno di qualche gradino su cui lo vedono eretto, fa dell’ironia sulla smania pedagogica di Pennac - la “saputezza”, da “saputello”, come si diceva una volta, sperando, come è consueto, di trovare un'alleata nell'altra donna.

"A questo punto Sonia fece una pausa, poi, rivolta a me, pacatamente cattivella: A proposito, l'ho già ringraziata per la bella lezioncina di storia che mi ha fatto sull'uscita del Grande dittattore? La reazione dei nazisti americani, la protesta delle ambasciate, Bridges e i portuali e via dicendo..." Poi, rivolta a Minne: "Dev'essere maledettamente rassicurante dividere la vita con un pedagogo! ". Minne le rispose che a volte mettevo molta saggezza nel persuadere i miei studenti che mi superavano di qualche spanna. "È il regalo che ha fatto a lei, Sonia, ed è ottimo per il morale". Si scambiarono uno di quegli sguardi in cui passa rapidamente l'alternativa tra la guerra fredda e la gioiosa stima. Apparentemente, fu la seconda ad avere la meglio. Sonia baciò la mano di mia moglie prima di tornare all'argomento principale."
Di tutte le sfrenate fantasie pennachiane, questa è indubbiamente la più estrema. Nella realtà le due donne si sarebbero alleate in mezzo secondo per umiliare il maschio pedagogo, e con lui tutti i maschi.

I started this book not quite sure on how to take it. Written in the french conditionnal tense, imagining a fictional Banana Republic carved somewhere in Northeastern Brazil, it sounded like a hodgepodge of the typical French fantasies of a mythical backward and yet lively south america.

However, I slowly understood the authour's sincere love for the Brazilian Nordeste (with some delightful verses of Cordel, which are graciously kept in a flavourful portuguese before getting translated) and how it was deeply ingrained in the novel's soul.

However, even though the whole purpose of this novel is to be meta-narrative, I feel like part of its worth was lost in its search for wit and extravagance. Even though its narrative experiment, which combined fiction with reality, blending them until complete dissolution, was very interesting, I feel there were many stories that would have been worth telling with a little more sincerity.

This makes me want to discover more of Pennac's bibliography. I have understood that he is an author of anecdotes. And indeed, his short, anecdote-feeling chapters are a pleasure to read. But each one of them hold the promise of a Grander story...

******* (7/10) BUENO. Ha sido una agradable sorpresa y un gran descubrimiento. El libro es muy ameno, de fácil lectura a pesar de estar desarrollado en varios planos temporales. Escrito con diferentes técnicas narrativas, el final me ha parecido que no está al nivel del resto de la obra; pero no disminuye significativamente el buen nivel de su conjunto. Y de qué trata? De los aconteceres en la vida de un sosias de un dictador agorafóbico sudamericano de la ficticia Teresina, Manuel Pereira, que decide poner pies en polvorosa y largarse a Estados Unidos armado con un cinematógrafo a principios del siglo XX; habla de Chaplin y habla de Rodolfo Valentino, habla de las apariencias y habla de las realidades, de las farsas de las verdades, de la dualidad realidad-ficción, de cine, de literatura, de Brasil y de Francia, de políticos y de hombres de negocios, y de un buen puňado de temas más. Recomendable.

Magari fosse stata solo la storia del dittatore e dei sosia, del sosia, del suo sosia.
Ma Pennac ha voluto strafare e ci ha messo pure la storia dell'autore e di come ha scritto il libro e di come gli sono venute le idee e dei suoi amici... e così via in un interminabile digressione matrioska che oltre a fare perdere il senso della storia, fa perdere anche il senso dell'incredulità e il filo della narrazione.
Cosa è vero? Cosa fa parte della storia? Quanta parte invece è una sega mentale di Pennac che pensa di pensare pensando? Ma in realtà la domanda non ha grande importanza perché oltre al resto si è persa anche la voglia di leggere.
E la storia originale? Troppo raccontata e poco vissuta, una favola della buonanotte lontana dalle meravigliose creazioni cui il vecchio Daniel Pennac ci aveva abituati.
Peccato.

Tja, geen boek om in één ruk uit te lezen. Wel heel origineel. Korte hoofdstukjes van één tot enkele pagina's die je toch laten dóórlezen. Het is een oneindige spiegeling, zoveel dubbelgangers dat je er scheel van gaat zien. Een Droste-effect. Je raakt de kluts kwijt. En als je denkt: ik leg het even weg, dan weet je al niet meer wáár in die chaos, dat spiegelpaleis, je gebleven was; zijn dit nieuwe personages, of waren ze al eerder opgevoerd? Het is knap van de auteur dat hij zelf de draad niet is kwijtgeraakt. Hij zal aan het gepuzzel, aan die Rubiks cube, vast veel plezier beleefd hebben. Maar ik ben het overzicht kwijt. Ik geef me gewonnen. Op pagina 199 van de 316.

This is a surprising book. First it's about something, then entirely something else and then something else again. You have to follow the author's train of thoughts, sometimes to be immersed in a strange but poetic story in a foreign country, sometimes to listen to Pennac autobiographical anecdotes. I didn't like the anecdotes that much, even though it's interesting to see how the writer is mixing his life into his novels and vice versa. It's a good read, relaxing and exotic.

Pennac sa fare di meglio e questa è una non storia nel senso che è piena di "questa storia dovrebbe essere scritta così..." oppure "questa è la storia di..." presa e ripresa più volte e più volte raccontandola senza mai raccontarla veramente. Tanto è vero che finisce dicendo "Ecco questa è la storia che sarebbe dovuta essere raccontata".
Insomma bellino ma nulla più.
Non lo consiglio.

J’ai bien aimé le dictateur et le hamac (surtout la deuxième partie).
J’ai cru n’y pas retrouver l’humour caustique et humble de Pennac et il suffisait en fait d’attendre, d’avancer pour retrouver sa plume qui se fiche allègrement des conventions d’écriture et qui discute autant de lui même que de ses romans.

Bref. Je me suis amusée en lisant le dictateur et le hamac, et sans la présence de Sonia, j’avoue que le livre y aurait laissé une étoile.
Bref. Vive Sonia, vive le hamac, vive Pennac.

Challenging book to read.
I bemoan that this book does not have enough footnotes and extras.
Aside the story and the story in the story and the characters that are based on characters that are based on characters - some of the parts of the book were world on it's own.
This is the type of book I don't read often.
I'm left with few additions on TBR and a healthy understanding of how little of the world I really know...

Книга-жизнь, книга-лабиринт, где сплетаются истории разных людей, повествования в разных стилях, хэмовская документалистика, маркесовский магический реализм, кортасаровские сквозные линии.
Это история про людей, и кажется, что вовсе нет никакой фантазии, всё так и было на самом деле, потому что так в жизни и бывает.

Trama contorta e surreale. Piu' un esercizio di scrittura che un romanzo. Per quanto l'esercizio sia mirabile la lettura fatica all'inizio, poi procede in discesa fino alla fine.
Interessanti alcuni passaggi, un libro capitato per caso ma che sono contento di aver letto.
