This final arc focuses less on the anti-hero of the previous arcs and is more typically the conniving, ruthless and intelligent Mystique we all know (and love :D) with great guest appearances from Fantomex, Rogue, Wolverine, Forge and Xavier! A Three Star, 7 our of 12 read.

It is the end game for Mystique when she must finally decide to continue to work for Professor X as his secret agent or assassinate him for the Quiet Man. Things get more complicated when her handler, Shortpack, goes missing after searching for Steinbeck, the mutant arms dealer who killed Prudance, the agent that Mystique replaced. There are plenty of double-crossings, revelations, and guest appearances in this series conclusion.

I appreciated that the creative team provided closure to all of the various plotlines, but this run is a hot mess compared to the previous three. It feels like the title was directed to end, so Sean McKeever threw all the pieces together for a finale, but the result didn't have the same tone that made the series fun to read. In a move that seemed forced and completely out of character, Shortpack races off only to get captured for the rest of the story. Meanwhile, each issue runs Mystique through another unrelated caper that feels like fill-in stories to highlight guest appearances (Fantomex, Wolverine, and Rogue) -- often a sign of declining sales.

A great ending to a series that is consistently above and beyond a lot of the other x-books writing at this point.

Some great twists in this one. I wish this wasn't the end of the series.

Edit: reread February 2021. I was knocked on my butt sick yesterday and wanted some comfort literature so I reread all four volumes of this series. And man, do I still love it. I even broke one of my (loose) rules and changed the rating from 3 to 4 stars on volume 1. I have to say that I like the nuance of Vaughan's writing a little more than McKeever's (which is interesting since I seemed to feel the opposite on first reading) this time around. Overall, I thought the series was really great (and luckily since my memory is crap, there were still a few surprises for me) although I will say that I felt that the ending was a little bit of a letdown. Still, this remains one of my absolute favorite X-men spinoff series and I wish more writers of Mystique would read it. (Don't get me started on how poorly she is often written after this series...) Oh, and where is shortpack? I can't remember him ever showing up anywhere else.

Well, this concludes this rather unusual series for Mystique. It wasn't a terrible spy series and this last volume really tried to bring in a lot of last-minute surprises and intrigues as any espionage tale should. It wasn't exactly groundbreaking and some parts felt overly contrived, but on the whole, it was enjoyable.

They really stretched Mystique's shapeshifting abilities in this title and I doubt we'll see such flexibility again. But at least it made for fun fights and good reading.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. Mystique as a spy with a teeny tiny handler.
There were a few strange threads to this final arc. The Quiet Man and his identity. (How?) Shepherd's beloved. (Creepy!) And all Garcia's men seemed to look the same (I preferred the artists in the first half of the run - Lucas & Ryan)

As the plot and the cast expanded to include Fantomex, Rogue, and Wolverine, I found myself less invested in the story. I much preferred that this was happening tangental to the other X-books but not dealing with any of their major characters.

It was still worth reading.

Si no me equivoco, tengo dos tercios de este tomo USA en revistas de Panini: Mística #10 y 11. Cuando me lea los anteriores y consiga el 12 para terminar esta saga, seguro le pegue una buena leída.
