This book was written by my Aunt and therefore is very personal to me so any review is bound to be somewhat skewed as a result.
Books that illustrate a time in history through a particular subject are always interesting to me and so Cambridge Grocer scores on that scale. It is lavishly illustrated throughout with images of the staff and the premises of Matthew and Son throughout the 150 odd years of it's existence and the whole book gives us a glimpse into a bygone age when shopping was a hugely different experience to the sanitized version we have today. For better or worse we will never see the likes of Matthews again - the landscape has so fundamentally changed.
Cambridge Grocer is therefore likely to appeal to a limited, probably local audience who remember the shop or are particularly interested in the local history of Cambridge, and that makes it a very valuable and interesting account.
