Here, for the first time, is a collection of Colin Baker's short stories, dealing in subjects as diverse as murder, mystery, true love, ingenuity, despair and farcical misunderstandings, with a hint of horror here and there as well as some insight into the minds of some unusual people. If you like your stories with a twist there are some surprises and shocks to be found.
There are 10 original stories, plus 3 about the sixth incarnation of Doctor Who - as played by Colin in the mid-eighties, including a key moment in the life of his old friend Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and a deft piece of negotiation by the Doctor with a very welcome result for the planet Earth.
Colin Baker (born 8 June 1943, London) is a British actor who is known for playing Paul Merroney in The Brothers from 1974 to 1976 and as the sixth incarnation of the Doctor in the long-running science fiction television series Doctor Who, from 1984 to 1986.
Colin Baker was born in London, but moved north to Rochdale with his family early in his life. He was educated at St Bede's College, Manchester and originally studied to become a solicitor. At the age of 23, Baker changed professions and enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), where he studied alongside David Suchet.
I'm horrifically biased but this collection of stories is fantastic. So many great stories, including three of the Doctor Who variety featuring everybody's favorite technicolour Time Lord. A lot of them hold some killer twists at the end but they are in no way contrived or heavily telegraphed to the point of being obvious. Also, keep a dictionary close at hand; Colin loves him some SAT-level vocabulary. If I had to choose a favorite story from this book, it would be a three-way tie between "Poison Pen", "Rosita", and "A Tourist Invasion".
Everyone who even remotely enjoys Doctor Who or a cracking good read should pick up a copy so that Mister Baker will have more incentive to release another volume of stories in the future. Pretty please?
A collection of stories by Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor. Most of them are non-sfnal stories about crime and the law, though the very first one has a strong horror element and the last three are short Doctor Who vignettes. Quite good at the punchline, not always as good at the set-up.
