Wow, I can see why this book won a Christy award. I have loved the previous two books in the Discarded Heroes series but this third book is in a category of its own. The action, suspense, plots twists, depth of emotions, and growth and stretching of the characters are absolutely mind-blowing. I’m reading Ronie Kendig’s books almost backwards (I’ve already met Canyon’s siblings Leif, Stone and Willow through other series) and I’ve loved every minute of getting to know Canyon and the Nightshade team. If you love romantic suspense, you will love this book.
Canyon has been the cool, level-headed soldier on the team but we get to see his passionate, impulsive, stubborn, haunted side of this brilliant combat medic that only Dani brings out in him. Dani is a paradox of sweetness, strength, vulnerability, iron will, hurt, and longing. Canyon’s past in the army, Dani’s captivity, and international intrigue and struggle for power collide to create an explosive plot that will have you gasping as you turn the pages. Their faith journey that allows them to finally understand redemption and forgiveness is quite rewarding. And Range? I’ll have to wait until the end of this year (2022) to understand why he was obsessed with Dani and what happened after leaving his entire Metcalfe clan behind.
I haven’t had such a thrilling ride in a while. So good!

Let’s just drag that word out for a teensy bit. Because this book is one CHARGED story.
Man! From dialogue to setting to character to the ACTION, this book doesn’t rest for a single second.
While I was reading, I tried to pinpoint what keeps this book so fast-paced. It’s the words the author chooses. Every single one throws you from word to word, catapults you from sentence to sentence and let’s not even start on paragraphs or chapter endings.
My point: the writing is strong. Ronie understands how to keep and grab the reader’s attention. I don’t easily follow all the tactical moves the guys of Nightshade do, but Ronie’s writing keeps me riveted.
With some mature themes, I loved Canyon and Dani. A great hero, a heroine who hasn’t let the past drag her down. Their story flies across the pages and I loved every single second of it.
It’s edgy. The story is slick and well written. The characters are deep and wide, 3D characters! The plot is intense (there’s that word again).

Intense, edgy Christian Fiction from a woman qualified to write a book about soldiers.
Danielle Roark, a Lieutenant and demolitions expert is in Venezuela with her team when they are ambushed. The men are held for ransom, but as the only woman Dani is taken to their General where she is tortured and raped (a lot) for 6 months. Eventually she manages to escape with a flash drive.
Problem is the information on it is too perfect. The Senate committee doesn’t believe her because information on her computer suggests she and the General are in league together, so maybe she’s a traitor…
Enter Canyon Metcalfe, black ops soldier with a tainted past and brother of the man who pulled Dani from the ocean after her escape. The guy who (along with his team) has to take her back to the very place she was held.
Tension between the brothers complicated what would otherwise be a straightforward boy meets girl.
But nothing about this book is straightforward! The reader is forced to throw out everything they think they know and by the end you’re fighting for the surface along with the characters.
Everything about this book was a surprise to me, from the level of evil, the abject betrayals, the manipulation, the secrets, and the fact both main characters (one present, one past) had in their lives attempted to commit suicide. Coincidence? No, I think God pairs us with the one person who is capable of understanding us all the way to the core.
Bad language: None. “He cursed” is how it’s dealt with. Maybe that’s not realistic for soldiers, maybe a lot of them cuss every other word but that’s okay with me. I can handle it being inferred instead of blatant.
Nudity: Obviously the rapes, not explicitly described, but when the character thinks/talks about it I think it’s supposed to make you uncomfortable. It’s an uncomfortable topic, but all too real. The two main characters, in a fit of passion while on the mission, do get intimate with each other but it’s done off camera. We end one scene with him sliding up the hem of her clothing, and next we find them in bed naked post-making love.
Yes, Christian characters (or at least those who profess to be) don’t usually act this way in Inspirational fiction, but it is a realistic part of life. It disappointed me a little that their reactions were like, ‘oops’. There didn’t seem to be real conviction until later. But I did respect the fact that it was part of their journey, the dealing with it, the moving on and learning, that was real to me.
The narrative when the soldiers are doing their soldering thing felt a little explain-y but hey, I’m not a special ops soldier so I need the why’s explained to me.
All in all, a thrill ride of a book that kept me tied up all the way until I’d finished the last page.

Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe a member of the Nightshade black ops team is tortured by his past and pain has manifested itself both emotionally and physically and it has him in a death grip. Danielle Roark, an explosives expert who was captured and tortured after a mission gone wrong in the jungles of South America is at the end of her rope until the handsome Metcalfe brothers come to her rescue time and again. Both Canyon and Dani must face the horrors of the past, risking death at the hands of a sadistic terrorist or the possibility of a lifetime of imprisonment for crimes they didn't commit.
As a fan of the Discarded Heroes series it's hard to wait patiently for the next book. I know that it's going to be suspenseful and romantic but that's about as predictable as this series gets. With each book I'm totally shocked and surprised by the bad guy, the setting plot twists but most of all by Ronie Kendig's ability to make me feel connected to the story. Wolfsbane, the latest installment in this thrilling series is no different. I started the book before bed vowing to read a chapter or two and I ended up tearing through over half of the book. The storyline and the suspense grabbed me by the throat and tore at my heart so that I could not set it aside.
Every second of this book took me on a journey. From the rain-soaked jungles to the courtroom to crazy dangerous secret missions to almost as dangerous family get togethers, each step of Dani and Canyon's is a challenge that you get to experience with them. The best thing about Wolfsbane are these "real" characters who make real-life mistakes. Sure, most of us aren't a part of a covert ops team but we are exposed to some of the same difficult choices and crossroads on our faith walks that Dani and Canyon faced.
Wolfsbane is by far my favorite of the series. I stand in awe of these incredible books and the uber-talented Ronie Kendig. If there are only a few books that you add to your "to-read" list this year make sure one of them is Wolfsbane! You won't regret it. Trust me.

WOLFSBANE, the third book in the Discarded Heroes series is about Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe. Canyon is a former Green Beret in the Army and was recruited by Olin Lambert to become a member of the elite team of former soldiers, Nightshade. He is the medic for the team. The team's missions include taking care of unlawful groups that prey on innocent people around the world. This includes jobs that world governments won't touch. The team is a secret group known to Olin Lambert and a few others. Canyon is a discarded hero because while still active duty and on a mission in the Philipines, a village was bombed by an air strike of which Canyon was unfairly accused of orchestrating. Canyon was there to train locals on combat methods to help them to be able to protect themselves against guerilla and enemy forces. This was a secret mission of the US government that he can not talk about or he would suffer consequences. He can't defend himself.
Olin Lambert is touched personally in this story when his goddaughter, Danielle Roark, a Demolitions expert with Army Corp of Engineers, and her team is attacked by a group of guerillas headed up by a rogue general in Venezuela. Danielle is abducted by the Venezuelan general named Bruzon and held captive for months. She is finally to able to escape her prison, jump off a cliff and find a way to float until found by the US Coast Guard and Coastie Range Metcalfe, Canyon's brother. Before escaping the prison Bruzon held her in, she managed to get a flash drive that held plans to his compound that showed an underground area housing nuclear weapons. She tied the drive to a tooth and swallowed it so that she wouldn't lose it. Unfortunately, upon returning to the states, the tables were turned on her and she was accused of espionage. In order to exonerate herself, she agrees to go on a dangerous mission back to Venezuela to show where he has the weapons stored. Nightshade escorts her on this mission but the mission seems to be compromised from the beginning. Canyon is attracted to Danielle but so is his brother Range.
This book is a roller coaster of adventure and danger with a heavy emotional undercurrent as Canyon fights his attraction to Danielle and she is attracted to him. There is a secondary story going on that took place years before in a village that you have read to understand what and who is being talked about. There are unexpected twists and turns brought out in the story. Canyon has so many problems that he finally realizes that he needs God's way to solve his issues and not his own. Another winner by Ronie Kendig.

In this third installment of the Discarded Heroes series, Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe keeps having flashbacks of that horrible day when it all went wrong. Why can't he seem to get it right? Why do men seem to be so stupid at times? It should have been a simple mission and he just had to blow it all.
Danielle has been trapped in the confines of a horrible beast for way too long. His tirades are intolerable and she has to get out. And she does...can she recoup from all the horrors of living like this for so long?
A courtroom makes all the difference. Imagine that! Will justice be served?
I have been waitingpatiently anxiously biting my nails off screaming at the author, Ronie Kendig for months to get this book released!! I love her style of writing as she makes the characters seem SOOO incredibly real! I do believe this particular story of Canyon to be the most real yet. Some of my favorite scenes were the ones of the family get-togethers, just because it reminds me of certain people and how they act (I was waiting on a food fight...) and those in the thick of the battle (just because I like that kinda stuff!)I wanted to jump into this book so bad and escape reality for awhile. Yep, that's how good this story is! I was able to escape reality (you can't put this one down....I dare you to try it! It won't work!) for a few short hours to learn Canyon's story. It tore at my heart, ripped it at the seams, to the point that I had to stop reading long enough for a good therapeutic cry.
Kudos to Ronie for another fantastic adventure with the Discarded Heroes. I am even more anxious now for Firethorn (release date 2012) but at the same time, it is bittersweet. Firethorn will be the last book in the Discarded Heroes series and I look forward to a happy ending (*hint* *hint* Ronie!).

This book is one of my all-time favourite books EVER! It’s intense, gritty, action-packed, and loaded with testosterone, and there’s something about the rawness of both Canyon and Dani that digs in and grabs hold of me every time I open its pages. It doesn’t matter that I know what’s coming; I get sucked in every. single. time. By their stories and their relationship.
Individually, Canyon and Dani have the kind of histories that would scar a person for life, but neither has the kind of temperament that allows that to defeat them. They get up and push on, despite life’s brutality. It’s this grit and determination that makes them both such compelling characters—the more so when their vulnerabilities are exposed and they stumble. But as Canyon’s brother wisely says: “We all make mistakes. It’s what we do after them that determines our character.” And, well, mistakes notwithstanding, I have so much love for these characters!
In fact, I love the whole Nightshade team. No one does elite warriors like Ronie Kendig, and she captures this team brilliantly in all its different shades (no pun intended!): the precision teamwork, the pressure-cooker of emotions, the to-the-death loyalty, the chest-beating, and the larrikinism! And then there’s the Metcalfe family. I have a feeling there are a few stories there waiting to be told!
If you love high-stakes suspense and strong, authentic characters, then Wolfsbane needs to be on your shelf.

This was a great tale, even though it's not my favorite of the series. I love the characters, but what they go through is just brutal. Also, they make a choice that, while realistic, is foolish and wrong. Kendig is a great writer, and I am really looking forward to book four...

Wow, what an intense, action packed ride! I had to stay up way too late last night to finish, what I believe to be Kendig's best novel yet! Man are her characters believable! Reading this novel, felt like sitting through a movie on the edge of my seat most of the time.
Let's go beyond the well fleshed out characters, the suspenseful plot; this story had heart to it. Kendig shows us pieces of ourselves and of life, and they are not all puppies and roses. There are hard things we face in this life, at times evil seems to have the upper hand but we must remember God is with us, God is for us. Do we trust Him? Are we willing to surrender all to Him and let Him work things out? Many times, if we are honest, we fail; we try to do things in our own strength and in our way. We are prideful. We are sinful.
This book is not your typical Christian fiction, there are some surprises packed in here. There is a message beneath all the suspense, the pain, the betrayals and sin. A message that is not preachy but real, honest and so well crafted that it grabs you. Yes, we live in a fallen world, and yes, all of us have sinned. The question is what do we do in response? Hopefully, there is repentance of our sin, a turning to God. Still, sin has consequences, some reaching beyond us and touching the lives of others. Do we also, take responsibility for our mistakes, do we try to make amends?
I applaud Kendig on a superbly written novel. I loved the realness of her characters. I loved the Metcalfe family... You could do a whole series on this family alone! (And I wish she would). Kendig hits all the bases with this one - mystery, suspense, action, romance, drama, faith and more; and she brings it all in for a home run! Fantastic!

Wow, this book. This book was probably my favourite of the series so far. The book deals with heavy subjects, so it is not suitable for sensitive/young readers , but for me it added to the depth of the characters.
Danielle was captured and held captive for six month by a horrible man, then managed to escape. Her struggles back in the world was real and emotional. Canyon, even though he is imperfect and made so much mistakes, the way he faced it at the end and took responsibility, just showed me how far he grew. This book had everything in a great story, loveable characters, characters you hate and characters you wish you can hit over the head. I couldn't believe Danielle's dad did what he did. No parent can be that heartless. I also didn't like Range at all, thinking he can manipulate events to make someone fall in love with you, it feels just as forced as being held captive.
The missions included lots of great action which created an adventurous read. There was some revelations I expected, but the ending was unexpected with Navas.
Another great installment in the Discarded Heroes series.
Wow, this book. This book was probably my favourite of the series so far. The book deals with heavy subjects, so it is not suitable for sensitive/young readers , but for me it added to the depth of the characters.

FANTASTIC! This book is Romantic Military Suspense, so if you're looking for a light, fluffy read, this isn't it! All I can say is, I was riveted to every page. The characters Dani and Canyon are both so real, so incredibly wounded by tragic circumstances, that you will pull your hair out, hoping and praying that God heals them and they get together. Put them in the middle of intrigue, betrayal, secret missions to Venezuela, really evil dudes vying for power and money, and a special ops team that we've all come to love through Ronie's other books, and you have an exciting, edge of your seat, stay up all night, story! Ronie not only knows her military jargon, she's also a master of intrigue and romance!

One of my FAVOURITE suspense books of all time. Geez. So jam-packed with gritty emotions and circumstances and characters that feel so real and relatable. Every minute I was on the edge of my seat--cheering, then wailing "noo!" from scene to scene.
What a feast for the reading senses.
The romance--what even.
The characters--yes, please. Canyon & Dani--like opposites attract in THE BEST WAY. Their relationship. SWOON. I feel like I could read five books all about them and never get bored.
The plot--it's basically the perfect storm.
IT WILL HAVE YOU ON TENTERHOOKS THE WHOLE TIME, YO. Just do yourself a favour and if you even remotely like romantic suspense or military fiction--go buy and read this book. Do it. Do it now. Righttt nowwwww. Gooooooooooooo!!! #FragOut
I wouldn't recommend this one for younger readers as it has some pretty intense mature themes, including rape, suicide, sex and some other things--it's just better for adult readers, methinks.

Each book in the Discarded Heroes series follows one of the main four guys. This story is Canyon Metcalfe’s. And what an amazing story it is! It is one of my comfort reads. The storyline is engaging and easy to follow. Canyon and Dani Roark make an interesting couple. His promise to protect her no matter what is super sweet. Everything he does for her just makes him an amazing book boyfriend. Dani had a lot to deal with in the story, but through the struggles she pushes through with the help of Canyon, his team, and God. This is indeed one of my favorite Romantic Suspense books! If you haven't read it already, you need to. You won't regret it!

Did y’all hear that? That was me releasing the breath I held almost the entire time I read Wolfsbane. WOW! Ronie Kendig, I love you, but you can put your characters in some horrible situations! Right when you start thinking they are safe and that everything’s going to work out - BAM! No! Something happens to, once again, make your heart start racing.
I LOVE this book, no, this series! It is awesome! As I’ve said before, Ronie Kendig writes the BEST male characters. Right now, the Discarded Heroes are all fighting TOX for the best male character ever! (Don’t worry TOX. You’re still safe) She pens the best camaraderie, great plot twists, and just an all around incredible story. Both Canyon and Danielle have gone through some really horrible things. You feel empathy for them from the get go. They are such great characters, in part, because they are so real. I will admit at one point in the book, I got a bit concerned, but I should have just trusted Ronie, because in the end, she always makes it right.
I’m telling you, these books should all be made into movies! Her consistency is amazing. 5 stars for this book is not enough! Next up, Firethorn!

Wolfsbane is the 3rd book in the series entitled Discarded Heroes by Ronie Kendig. This series focuses on men who have served their country in the military, men who have been discarded by their government who are then infused with hope by a high ranking official who gives them a chance to become a member of an elite black ops team known as Nightshade.
Captain Canyon Metcalfe is such a hero whose career as a Green Beret medic had been ripped out of his hands 24 months prior to the start of the novel. Discharged from service with little to his name apart from shame and guilt that hounds him day and night, Canyon is a loose cannon until once again he is given a purpose in life as a member of the Nightshade team.
26 year old demolitions expert, Lieutenant Danielle Roark is a woman who has visited hell on earth and survived. Having spent almost six months in Venezuela as a captive raped and tortured at the hands of the VFA i.e. The Courage of Bolivarian Army headed by the notoriously evil General Humberto Bruzon. Danielle escapes with her life barely intact only to be labelled as a traitor by her own country requiring that she return to Hell on earth once again to prove that she had not been fabricating the story of how she was captured and was held against her will.
Though it is Canyon's younger brother that lays claim on Danielle at first, it is the undeniable connection that springs forth between Canyon and Danielle that makes her feel safe for the first time since her ordeal at the hands of General Bruzon and his men. Though Canyon tries to do the honorable thing and step aside to leave the field clear for his younger brother, emotions that Canyon had thought long since buried after losing the woman he loved renders Canyon unable to turn away from how Danielle makes him feel. And as luck would have it, it is Nightshade that is tasked with the responsibility of getting Danielle safely in and out of Venezuela to find the proof that she needs in order to clear her name.
Ronie Kendig does a swell job of describing the many a risky situations in which the hero and heroine finds themselves in, together with the team of Nightshade. The descriptions were vivid enough to make me feel as if I were watching a movie rather than reading a book, which was one of the best parts about this story. I loved how Canyon and Danielle's relationship unfolded, both broken people who heal along the way to deserve each other and the love that springs forth between them as time works its magic on their bruised emotions and feelings. A realistic pace is what the author sets with Danielle, a woman who endures the worst type of horrors that anyone of the fairer sex can undergo, and emerges as a broken woman in body and soul, nearly driven to take her own life until she learns to gather strength from the man who stands unwaveringly by her side through the worst of times in her life.
When I picked up this novel from Netgalley, I really had no idea that this was also categorized under Christian Romances though I later saw the label which at first I missed. I usually refrain from reading books that preach any sort of religion and was keeping it in mind to stop reading if the book were to get too preachy for me. However it turned out that reading a Christian Romance wasn't so bad after all - in the end its just about instilling hope in those who seem to have lost their way.
Though Ms. Kendig brings to life the sizzling attraction that flares up between Canyon and Danielle right from the very start of their relationship, there are no scenes of any explicit variety included in the story. So this would be an ideal romance for those who like the build up to the act and leaves the actual act of sex to the imagination of the reader. I recommend this title for fans of the Discarded Heroes series, Ms. Kendig definitely knows what she is doing with these hot-as-sin ex-military heroes and I'm sure her fans would agree with me on this 100%. I would also recommend this title for those who love military themed action-packed romances because this is one story that delivers on all counts.

I will admit to doing a happy dance when I walked into work (a bookstore) and saw that Wolfsbane, the newest Military/Romantic-Suspense novel by Ronie Kendig, had been released. Literally, I danced. A co-worker and I had been eagerly counting down the days/months until the release - being that we are such fans of the series. It should be noted that when the aforementioned co-worker walked in the store later on and I shoved a copy of the book in her face, she too squealed and did a happy dance.
A few days later my boss ran up to me and said, “So have you read the new book in our favorite series?!” Little did I know that after my raving about Nightshade and Digitalis after their releases, she'd started gobbling up the books as well. She caught me off guard yesterday when she came up to me and in a very serious, concerned voice said, “I have horrible news…” Images of empty candy aisles at the supermarket flashed in my brain. She gave me a pained face and cried, “I finished Wolfsbane last night! Now what am I supposed to read?!” My heart went out to her, I too recently went through this horrible loss. Judging by the bags under her eyes, I knew it had been a long night. Though my own bloodshot eyes should be the last to judge… We both agreed that after reading any of Ronie’s books we have to go through a time of “mourning” where we can’t read anything else. Because, as she mentioned, “All of the other books I read afterwards seem so below par. I have to regroup and let that one filter out of my brain before I can read anything else.” My thoughts exactly. After the general consensus of Ronie Kendig’s literary genius, we decided to display Wolfsbane in the front window of our store and put a “we recommend” sign on the shelf with her books. My customers should know this by now, though. It seems that after every release in the Discarded Heroes series, any customer that even glances in the direction of the fiction area of the store will get a talkin’ to about the series from me. Call me crazy, but I love a suspense novel that is full of suspense! And Wolfsbane delivers!
One, out of many, reasons I am such a fan of these books is because of their raw honesty! The characters are human: broken, gritty, and so completely raw that my heart actually hurts for them at moments. Often, in Christian fiction, the characters will show their “human-ness” to a certain degree, but they are still relatively put together people who have everything resolved by the last paragraph. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes it isn’t realistic. What is so great about Ronie Kendig’s books is that she highlights how these very flawed characters have to fight to see change in their lives, it doesn’t just happen. And they are not peachy clean by the end of the novel, they’re still in the midst of growing and healing.
Another reason why I absolutely loved Wolfsbane in particular, is for some very taboo subject matter it covers. I won’t say what (you’ll have to read it to find out!) but I applaud Ronie for putting her characters in a compromising situation and seeing them fail! As a reader, it gave me a mere glimpse of what it is like for the Lord, seeing His children make poor, sometimes down-right horrible choices and being heartbroken because of it. The main characters, Dani and Canyon, hit rock bottom and had to completely lean on Christ to climb back up again. It was beautiful. It was gritty. It was real life.
If you didn’t catch my subtle hinting before, I will say it again - I highly recommend Wolfsbane and all of the books in the Discarded Heroes series. And when your finished, feel free to stop by my bookstore, my boss and I will console you in your loss. We’ve been there.

Wow! That seems to be what I say whenever I finish one of Ronie Kendig's books. I'm not even sure where to begin this one...but simply put: this book ROCKED my world! Ronie continues to amaze me with her depth of characters and plot, her heartfelt writing and her ever present message of faith. She just keeps getting better and better.
In the previous books, Canyon is known as "the quiet and easy-going one", yet there were so many things that caught me by surprise in this book as we get to know him. My favorite scene is when the Nightshade team has returned from their failed mission. Canyon is in the hospital and he realizes that Dani isn’t with them. He’s struggling to overcome his addiction, he’s riddled with guilt and he basically goes crazy. He starts a fight with Max (never a good idea) and breaks down in tears with the weight of the world on his shoulders. The emotion in this book was off the charts! Ronie has a talent for making her heroes SO, SO flawed and SO real, yet in the end, they always realize that God is in control and loves them.
Ronie possesses the unique skill of capturing the readers attention and provided a vivid background. I adore how she can transport the reader from a family get-together in the backyard, to being stuck in a Hummer during a mudslide in Venezula, to a secluded hotel room and even to a tense court room hearing. I really feel like I’m there and apart of the story. Plus, probably what I loved most about this book is that her characters deal with “real” issues and make “real” mistakes. This isn’t your typical walk-in-the-park, boy-meets-girl/they-fall-in-love, Christian Fiction. This book brings up suicide, sex slavery, addiction and premarital sex. That's raising the bar, and Ronie nailed it!
After Digitalis, I didn’t think this would happen…but Wolfsbane is my new favorite of the series! I highly recommend it. Go out and buy this book now. Or if you live near me, come over and I’ll let you borrow it! January 2012 cannot get here quick enough and I can’t even being to imagine how awesome Firethorn is going to be.

While Ronie writes skillfully, she doesn’t pull any punches. There are some “edgy” aspects to WOLFSBANE that the reader needs to be aware of as Team Nightshade locks and loads for another mission.

Ah, yes. All is right with the world because Ronie Kendig has another book in her Discarded Heroes Series out! Her style of writing with strong characters, tight plots filled with suspense and danger and lots of drama from the past all rolled into one is so intense that I can hardly put her books down. Wolfsbane doesn't disappoint and all I could think the whole time I am reading it is - how much longer until the next one comes out!!! If you haven't read Ronie Kendig yet then you must dive in now, but start with the first book so you can enjoy the development of her characters as you go!
I'm going to add a comment regarding some of the controversy around one of the plot lines in this book. Christians aren't perfect. Most of us would like to think we are, but sadly we aren't and we wouldn't need God's grace if we were. This is shown clearly in this particular book and I loved that Ronie stuck her neck out and showed this so well. God's grace will cover a multitude of sins, consequences must still be dealt with but God forgives. I believe this particular storyline will allow some Christians dealing with condemnation to believe this and receive forgiveness for themselves. Kudos to Ronie for her bravery in that area as a writer!

This is the third in the Disgarded Heroes series, but the first I read. And to have missed the first two books in the series isn't a problem to follow this story.
I really enjoyed this book. This book is full of action and even when there is just a family party going on Ronie Kendig knows how to keep your attention. Roarke is a strong female. Even after all she has been through, being held captive by the VFA in Venezuela, she escapes and when she comes home she's being accused of being a traitor. She wants to clear her name and this is where Canyon comes in place. His team will take Roarke back to get the proof she needs to clear her name.
The rivally between the brothers Canyon and Range about Roarke isnt one I love, but that's a personal thing. I just don't like this kind of thing in life or fiction. Other then that this was a really great story which made flip page afte page just to see what would happen next. Also the side story that was told by a dying woman gave the story an extra twist.
This might have been the first in the series I have read, but I will definitely check out the other books in this series

This was a great book. It had adventure, action, inspiration, romance, thrills, chills, redemption, forgiveness, hope, trust, faith and excitement. Ronie Kendig wrote about some very sensitive issues in this book. There were a few things that were uncomfortable reading about but it showed the strength and courage of Danielle. In this book, you come to understand why Canyon "Midas" is so secretive and more of a loner. Ms. Kendig writes in a way that makes you feel what the characters are going through whether it's good or bad. There were times I just had to put the book down and walk away, but I couldn't get it out of my mind and had to go right back to see how things were going to end up. I can't say enough good things about the "Discarded Heroes" series. I highly recommend "Nightshade", "Digitalis" and "Wolfsbane". Now I can't wait to start "Firestorm".

This is definitely as fast-paced and tense as the other books in her series. It isn't as clean. Christian characters do some things that are pretty . . . non-characteristic of Christian characters (but not necessarily non-characteristic of backslidden Christians). Some of it seemed to be unrealistic with the rest of the plot and/or character history to that point.
All that aside, it was still a good story with well written characters. I wanted to find out what would happen to them and how they would work it all out. I loved the action scenes and how the team itself functioned. I'm not sure if anyone does that better than Ronie Kendig. I just wasn't crazy about the family dynamics or the romance.

In this book, we get to know Canyon. I found it amusing how all the children in his family were named after things in nature. Brothers~~Stone, Leif, Range, sister Willow. I had the time to myself and was able to read this book in two days. Oh my gosh, it's 2 in the morning. I just couldn't put it down. At first I found it confusing and hard to follow. It kept going between what was happening in the present and something that was happening I wasn't sure when. But I finally pieced it all together. Oh man, what a story. At times I found the situation to be unplausible. But weird things happen all the time. Right? You won't be sorry if you get this book. Just allow yourself time to read it. It's one you won't be able to put down. Now on to Firethorn!

Not as good as the first 2, I think (I had a bit of a struggle getting into it), but still definitely worth reading. I liked the way Canyon's family was portrayed. The struggles of both Dani and Canyon were well written (which I've come to expect from Ronie Kendig even after reading only 2 other of her books). Can't wait to read book 4!

Hmmm...
Some elements of this book get four stars while others get three or maybe 3.5, so my rating is somewhere in between.
The story itself is heart-pounding and suspenseful!!! It's guerilla warfare and jungle survival and all the intensity of a black-ops team trying to get the mission done. Add in trouble and failure at almost every turn and you have one wild ride.
It took me this long and until Range showed up for me to think, "wait. Canyon. Range. Metcalfe." *goes to check last new Kendig book* Oh! We have character cross over!!!! (I may be a little slow :) I like the Metcalfe family and it was fun to interact with them a bit.
Remember back in Nightshade when everyone was wondering why Midas spoke the language and seemed so familiar with everything? Well, that puzzle is solved now. I felt so bad for Canyon and the guilt he carried around for so many years.
I was frustrated by stupid committees and the horrible who ruined things and made peoples' lives difficult at every turn. The number of roadblocks was crazy! But I never saw . I had to read that a couple of times to fully comprehend it.
This book is kind of graphic. There are a number of elements that are rough and a poor decision is made. I really liked what Canyon said though about why God doesn't want people to have sex outside of marriage. It boiled down to commitment and how we have no idea what is in store but God does. If there is no commitment of marriage, it opens up all kinds of questions about if the person will stick around or come back or, well, any number of things. I mean, I know it is a safeguard and for our good, but I liked the explanation in general.
With all it's messiness, this is not my favorite book in the series, but it was still good.

Where do I begin?
This story started out great. It was action-packed with interesting characters and an intriguing plot.
My heart ached for Dani. To go through such pain and then be accused of the same crime she is trying to expose.
Canyon...dude, talk to your brother. You could have cleared everything up with a conversation. I know it is a story, and we need suspense and conflict, but it was unrealistic that he and his brother wouldn't have talked about Dani.
It started getting strange after the Nightshade team dropped in Venezuela. All of a sudden, we have tons of action, then Dani and Canyon running for their lives. I started noticing things about the book I didn't care for in these chapters. Way too much description of Dani and Canyon's relationship.
One scene literally ruined the entire book for me. The author could have written the scene differently and in a less edgy way. Several times I wondered if this was a Christian book, meant to inspire and encourage, or if it was an edgy romance.
I hate leaving a bad review for this book because up until now, the other Nightshade books in the series were great. I'm not sure what the author was trying to do with this one. Even though the character's sin clearly had consequences, it was a poor compromise for the inappropriate scenes.

Ronie Kendig’s Discarded Heroes series just keeps getting better with every book!
This one is non-stop action! It’s every bit as gritty and intense as the first two books, perhaps even more so. In fact, it should probably come with a trigger warning - this one gets pretty heavy.
But, as with the other two, Ronie handles it so wonderfully that it doesn’t become too much, and - at least for me - it doesn’t weigh on you after the book is finished. I applaud her ability to handle such deep and possibly traumatic issues with a heavy dose of reality and believability, and just the right amount of hope.
This time around it‘s Midas’ story. The team medic AKA Canyon Metcalfe is doing something he swore he’d never do - falling for the woman his brother is dating. She has just returned from being held captive for 6 months by a Venezuelan guerilla group. Charged with espionage, Danielle is forced to return to Venezuela, accompanied by Canyon and Nightshade to try to prove her innocence...
High action, complex characters dealing with complex issues and just the right amount of romance to soften it a little - what more could you ask for? This book will slap you in the face with grim realities, but will also leave you feeling hopeful & desperately hanging out for the next book!

I really loved reading this book but not quite as much as the previous books in the series.
The reason for that is that a lot of times maybe of the characters annoyed me for one reason or the other. Like Canyon’s brother really annoyed me, Range was claiming a girl for himself without even considering what Danielle thought and also their family being so quick to consider Danielle ‘Range’s girl’ without considering Danielle’s and Canyon’s feelings.
I did like the relationship between Danielle and Canyon but I also felt that we didn’t get enough time to really see their chemistry.
I also really did not approve of an action that Canyon did while he’s the Christian character because he crossed a mayor line but I was glad to see how he really regretted it and how he redeemed himself while also helping Danielle get close to God.
