The Olympus Pride #2

When He's An Alpha

Rate this book
The golden rule of shallow flings is not to get attached, right? Well, Havana Ramos broke it. Big time. There's just something about Tate Devereaux that pulls at her. Assertive, compelling, and self-assured, the Alpha cat shifter pushes every one of her best buttons. Like really, really hard. Having overheard an enlightening conversation, she knows he won't give her more than a fling--something, to be fair, he'd told her well in advance. If she doesn't want her heart to get bruised, it's time to end what little they have. It's not like he'll care or anything. Except . . . it turns out that he does.

Newly-appointed Alpha Tate Devereaux is never bothered when women walk away. He can't exactly blame them, given his distrustful cat's habit of withdrawing from relationships. But when lone shifter Havana ends their fling, everything within Tate rebels against it--including his cat. Even as she and Tate work together to crush the threat looming over her, Havana holds him at arm's length. But if she thinks she can end their fling with no real explanation and that he'll just tip his hat and walk away, she's forgotten one very important thing--there's nothing easy about shaking off an Alpha.

Contains mature themes.

This one bums me out, but oh well. However, let's back up.

I have read every single book Suzanne Wright has written, multiple times over each. My point? I'm a huge Suzanne Wright fan. I just love her and her books.

Can her stuff be formulaic and somewhat repetitive? Yes. But I've never cared before; in fact, I've enjoyed it. However, this book felt a little more cut-and-paste than most. Also, I felt like there was a lot more telling vs. showing via dialogue than usual, and sometimes it just felt awkward.

Ultimately, however, I think I just felt very disconnected from Havana and Tate as a couple. Havana (albeit a badass whom I really liked as a character) just felt too alpha...and, conversely, Tate didn't feel alpha enough to handle her. Their relationship had no pull. No urgency.

In fact, Havana and her relationship with Bailey and Aspen felt more connected and interesting to me than her relationship with Tate. They are the reason this book got more than two stars from me. And speaking of Aspen...she and Camden stole every scene they were in. I want THEIR book. Now. Stat.

All that said, I think I just didn't mesh with this book for whatever reason. But no big deal, I ain't even mad about it, ya'll. I'm sure I will LOVE the next one. After all, it's Aspen and Camden's book. Can't wait.

– 2.5 stars

Tate was annoying me very much in this book, because he couldn't figure out his feelings for Havana. Tate and Havana started out as friends w benefits which wasn't great and didn't work for me. Suzanne Wright's book usually give me comfort, because I know exactly what to expect, but I'm slowly getting tired of the same formula at the same time.

The only thing that elevated this book from a 2.25 stars to a 2.5 stars was the cameo of certain side characters. One scene in particular at the end. I love the banter between these characters. Mila and Dominic are without a doubt my fav SW couple and their interactions make me grin like a fool. I'm basically only reading these books now, bc I know they're going to make a cameo at some points and I need to collect the breadcrumbs. ✨
Dominic smiled at Havana and Tate. “You two look so loved up I’d find it nauseating if I wasn’t the same with my mate.” He looked at Havana, adding, “Mila was my first, you know. She took my virginity.” Everyone snorted, but Dominic ignored them. “She wasn’t so keen on having me at first, but who can resist an offer of ten solid inches of warmth, love, and understanding?”
Mila sighed at Havana. “I know what you’re asking yourself. And yes, he is always this weird.” Dominic peered down at Mila. “But you can’t say I don’t make a good mate, baby.” He slid his gaze back to Havana. “I treat her like my homework. Toss her on the table and spend all night doing her.”
Mila lifted a hand. “That’s it, you don’t get to talk to other people anymore.”
As the couple quarreled, Tate looked at Havana and said, “Apparently, he used to spout cheesy lines at every woman he met. Some think it’s a mental disorder, but they’re not sure.”

I know there is something very wrong with Dominic and his dumb af pick up lines should have run its course, but nope I love this dumbass. <3

Mila's parents fighting was the other highlight. That family is nuts and somehow I want them to adopt me. 🥺👉👈
James pointed at Havana. “Don’t take for granted that you’ve blended well into Tate’s family. I can’t boast the same. Valentina’s dysfunctional relatives will never accept me.” He didn’t sound too bothered by that, though.
Valentina rounded on him. “Perhaps if you did not call my mother ‘Skeletor’—”
“It’s just a pet name,” said James.
“—and my father her ‘man-slave’—”
“That’s just a statement of fact.”
“—they would be inclined to accept you. And my family is not dysfunctional.”
“You think it’s normal that your mother once gagged and bound your father to the bed in their spare room because she ‘wanted a little peace and quiet’?”
“It was just role play. She freed him after two days.”
“Oh, well, then it’s okay.”

I have been unabashedly proclaiming my love for SW every chance I get and this time is no different. SW has the golden formula and I don't mind gorging myself in it every time. I think I've actually run out of adjectives to praise her with so this is going to get repetitive.

One thing I always love is her exceptional animal pairings. This book was no different. A Tasmanian devil and a pallas cat! I can't even picture it together and yet it works! She makes it work.

description

description

I also have to thank SW for introducing me to animals I didn't even know existed, such as bearcats.

description

Soooo, what else can I say? I loved the introduction of Havana and her girls in the series. I loved Havana's level headedness and loyalty. Aspen and Bailey were the crazy comic relief and I loved them both.

We see Tate, officially now as the Alpha of the Olympus Pride, fully immersed in his role and the smooth transition of power from Vinnie to him. I'm gonna be honest I get a bit lost with the names now. We have appearances from the Phoenix and Mercury Packs and while I remember the couples mostly, trying to remember all their respective kids and their relationships and all the new ones in the Olympus Pride does get a bit too much for my poor brain.

Tate was the perfect Alpha for me and Havana was his equal. Both Alphas in their own right I thought they'd bud heads more but Havana was so supremely confident in her self and smart enough to know when to push or back down and Tate acknowledged and respected her strength and need to be in the action and not cut back for her own protection. I just loved their relationship.

I really need the next book now!! If you love shifter books you cannot miss out on this author!

So many unusual shifters!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎤🎧🎙🗣
Romance: ♥️🖤💙💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📙📕📗📘
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: 🤕🤬🤯😲🥰

The heroine: Havana Ramos - a “loner” shifter, she is not a member of a pack or pride. Though she is best friends with other loners (Bailey, the black mamba shifter and Aspen, the bear cat shifter), and their landlord is Tate Devereaux, whom she is also having a fling with.

The Hero(es): Tate Devereaux - Alpha of the Olympus pride of Pallas Cats. Tate had once nearly bonded with a member of his pride who later left Tate for her true mate. Tate never wanted to go through that again, so now he has short flings with women but doesn’t get serious.

The story: Havana starts wanting more than a fling with Tate and knowing that he will never want more, she breaks things off with him. However for some reason Tate doesn’t want to give Havana up. So when there is a threat against Havana from a half-shifter named Gideon who is behind the kidnapping and selling of lone shifters, Tate swears he will protect Havana.

Like all of Suzanne Wright’s shifter books, this one has amazing supporting characters as well as a great storyline based on a person or group that presents a threat against the protagonists. I loved all the supporting characters, especially Aspen and Bailey whose animal were always fighting each other in the living room. Havana, Aspen and Bailey are all strong female leads who used to work for “The Movement” and each have their own very strong and terrifying animals.

There were also some great side characters like Dieder, a bird shifter who was an ex of Havana’s and Camden, a tiger who is best friends and roommates with Aspen but there seems to be more there even though he dates guys. I also loved Tate’s family. I love how his sister Elle acts like his brother Damien is the spawn of the devil due to his name and never lets up on him about it. They are hilarious.

Tate tipped his chin at their youngest brother, who was walking along the opposite side of the street with a friend. Damian waved at them.

Elle perched a hand on her hip. “Look at him strolling around like he’s a normal person and not the son of Satan. He blends well—I’ll give him that.”

Tate sighed. “Do you think you’ll ever reach a mental place where you no longer feel compelled to brand our baby brother the Antichrist?”

I just love that Suzanne adds all of these unusual animals as shifters, she added the pallas cats a while ago, but the addition of birds, snakes, bear cats, Tasmanian devils, bush dogs, cheetah’s and more just adds to stories. The romance was also super hot and steamy and there is plenty of humor and action to boot.
For some reason it took me a while to get into this story. It might have been because Havana and Tate started out having a fling. I really like the first meeting between the protagonists so I can get into the romance from the beginning. But I eventually did get into the story. The narrator Samantha Cook, was terrific, though I do like it better when there are both male and female narrators.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Kudos to Suzanne Wright for trying to think outside the box, but I couldn't take any of the action seriously when the H and h were out there lookin like this:

The hero, a pallas cat shifter:

The heroine, a tasmanian devil shifter:

Too cute...

Overall, this was a classic SW book. Very formulaic, a lot of OW/OM drama and a heroine who is clearly not like other girls. The hero was also a bit of a loser for not using his God-given brain... but doesn't that happen to the best of us? Who am I to judge.

SW is a very hit or miss author for me, I've given her books a range of different ratings but I always come back to them because I enjoy her fast paced writing style. Onto book 3!

5 smut-fucking-tastic shifter stars!! Please note the f-word might be over used in this review.....

Once again Suzanne Wright delivers the best recipe that she has mastered with her books.. Hot over protective alpha, snarky ass female who can take care of herself and is extremely sarcastic, action, suspense and the best kind of SMUT and I loved every minute. How do you not? It's a fucking Pallas Cat and a Tasmanian Devil Shifter Romance.... It's impossible not to love it. Two virtually crazy animals - mated!! Tate and Havana's characters are as usual amazing. If you haven't figured it out yet, I LOVE THESE BOOKS so much! They are my happy place.

If you even remotely enjoyed any of her Pack books, you will love this amazing addition. I have said it before and I'll say it again.... If the shit ain't broken, don't fucking fix it!!

Havana, and besties Bailey/Aspen, totally give me the vibe from our girls of Dark In You. These girls had me laughing my ass off, when Tate didn't have me all hot and bothered.

Can we all take a moment and talk about Camden (who I just found out is the next book), he is a new character introduced in this book and I'm in fucking love with him already. He is my new Cain (sadly I'm still processing the fact we won't get his book).

Tate was awesome, loved everything about him. And I'm super excited for Luke's book (hint, hint -AGE GAP PEOPLE). Sadly it will be years before we get his.

Thank you Suzanne Wright for continuing to give me books that I adore, and can enjoy over and over again. Please, please, please don't listen anyone who is complaining about you "copying and pasting" and putting the same old story out with a new title - BECAUSE IT IS MY FUCKING JAM EVERY FUCKING TIME!!!

I mean seriously people, we are what 15 books in to her Pack books and every one is amazing and has a similar spec-fucking-tacular recipe. You can't honestly be surprised when you pick it up and they all have the same vibe.

It would be like picking up a Kristen Ashley book and expecting the guy to not be an asshole.

Now, I just need the audio so I can add this to my audio repeat list!

BUT.... I'm not happy I have to wait until March 2022 for the next one!!

I know, I'm a mess about it!

I'm not sure I can wait!!

**Finally the audio is here and I'm so happy I get to relisten to it all the time now!!

typical shit suzanne be writing nowadays. hero & heroine have a fling, heroine catches feelings, he have commitment issues (ALL of the author's heroes she writes does). hero only wants to fuck her, but not fuck with her heart. the hero figured out that’s his mate when heroine almost “died” and NOW he wants to more than fuck her aka ready to commit.

WHEN HES A “ALPHA” HES REALLY A DOUCHE

h- 27yr Devil shifter
H- 32yr Pallas cat

DNF at 70% I just can’t with this!
Gah what is going on with this series? W the exception on book 4….. it’s either unsafe or an episode of LOONEY TUNES or both.

This guy WAS NOT A ALPHA!!!! He was a PUSSY!!! literally since he was a Pallas cat shifter.

⚠️Safety-
-OMD & OWD- both have ex that want them back and cause trouble. Neither interested
-They have been together for 4mo no OP during separation

-Manwhore extreme like the extra Gross kind H had a past love and was willing to give up his true mate to imprint on her. But the ex jolted him! So now he’s salty and untrusting when his mate comes he’s damaged goods……PUSSY.

-Only keeps woman for a month two tops!! PUSSY

-The H and h are sleeping together for 4 months and she breaks it off cause he doesn’t want more then casual. HE LETS HER GO… NOT ONCE… NOT TWICE… BUT THREE FREAKING TIMES!….even having a strong draw and feelings for her… even though his cat is acting totally different with the h……PUSSY

-His cat gets obsessed with MULTIPLE WOMAN 😵‍💫 then gets bored within a month so the H won’t commit to even trying anything with the h…. Who he clearly likes and can’t stay away from. That and he’s BOND scared now after his ex….PUSSY

-This girl is such a doormat and never fights her BBS! Ok so once or twice she TRIES to push him away and stand her ground but she caves so fast EVERY FREAKING TIME….. annoying.

-EVERY LITTLE MATE THING between them ment nothing cause he had done ALL OF IT BEFORE w his ex when he tried imprinting. All the little stuff that makes it special. He had already given a OW the mating experience …..PUSSY.

‼️So I’m not buying what the author is selling me. I felt NO connection.
‼️The h isn’t special and let’s face it…. That’s why we read shifter mate books. To see how special and different the matte is from OW and OM.

😵‍💫Gah what the fuck was this!? After reading the Mercury Pack series I feel like this was
A CARTOON VERSION OF A THREE STOOGES MEETS CHARLIES ANGELS SKIT🤡….. (thanks for the perfect reference Kate). I mean these are adults.
I could not for the life of me connect or care about any of this. Not the characters or the stories and definitely NOT the stupid “comedy” and antics. This was so dumbed down that I feel like I need to poor bleach in my brain 🧠 to wipe this crap out of every crevice of it.
Just UTTER nonsense.

When He's an Alpha is the second book in The Olympus Pride. Havana Ramos is a lone-shifter who lives with other lone shifters. Although she has been happy to indulge in some passionate nights with Tate Devereaux, the Alpha of his pride, she knows there is no actual future for them, so she decides to break things off with him. Tate is not quite ready to let her go. Although he knows he cannot claim her, he refuses to let anyone else have her. As dangerous shifters start to threaten Havana, Tate pushes aside all of his fears, and he decides to make Havana his.

Overall, When He's an Alpha will appeal to Suzanne Wright fans who will never get enough of her shifter romance magic. Although many of her books tend to trend towards the same pattern, I just cannot quit my Shifter addiction. When Ms. Wright is writing, my Kindle and I are ready and waiting for more!

I've read every book by the author and don't see that changing any time soon. Her work is formulaic but there's comfort in that. Sadly this read didn't have me sinking into the read as I expected.

I very much enjoyed the heroine but the MCs together - well something was missing, Tate lacked a certain oomph as a alpha shifter and his relationship with Havana did not sizzle and spark off the page.

3.25 stars.

The usual fabulous reading from Ms. Wright.
However, I feels like few of the scenes kind of similar with many of her previous books.

And I found out, I’m not too keen with these fluffy, cute and small animals shifter much 🥴🤷‍♀️.
No matter how dangerous they are 😐.

Give me those big, dangerous and killer animals instead, please! 😘

NOTE:
I just noticed Aspen and Camden would get a book! ❤️
I have to say, those two much more interesting than these two, eventhought this book not theirs 😬.
I can’t wait to read the bonkers snake pairing with the mental tiger! 😘😂

He's an Alpha all right...

Yes, he's all Alpha, but so is she.

It was a pleasant surprise to have a storyline where the heroine was just as strong, determined and in control as the hero. What made it even better was that she wasn't all in your face about it. She managed to get the outcome she wanted by controlling her surroundings, keeping focused and staying cool...mostly. ;-)

It cracked me up that the hero had to adjust to having someone be in control, besides himself. I also liked the way this love story played out. It wasn't all...I feel the heat...YOU ARE MINE!! Sure, I like that normally, it was just a wee bit cool to see it play out in a different way and that he had to convince her to give him a try.

The storyline was engaging, the narrator does a fantastic job and I was entertained from start to finish. Yes, this wasn't my favourite story by Suzanne Wright, but it was far from sloppy. You can always count on this author to provide a story where you believe that shifters are real. You're even kind of hoping that some lucky girl is going to be lucky enough to be someone's ... MINE!

Another great instalment of The Olympus Pride series, and I will definitely be back for more.

Reread 4/1/2022: 3.5 stars. I still really like the setup for this book, but it didn’t feel quite as good as I remembered it being. I think I need to give myself more time before even considering doing another reread. I am still extremely irritated by SW’s inconsistencies in her shifter series. I just wish her world building and plots were a little less willy-nilly.

3/29/2021: 3.5 stars. The first half of this book was pretty stupid, but the second half was significantly better, although very predictable. I actually liked the premise at the beginning of the book... but the execution needed a lot of work. There were also plenty of spelling and grammar errors that needed correction.

Right at the start, the heroine (Havana) decided to have a backbone and move on with her life when the hero (Tate) didn’t want to commit to her. They were having a fling and she starts to catch feelings, so she decides to move on with her life. Go Havana! 🎉 And the dumbass lets her go... because he thinks that his inner animal will eventually get sick of her.
Scratching my head over here.
I didn’t think that the hero’s reasons for walking away made sense. He kept saying that his animal wanted him to bite her, to mark her, he was miserable being away from her, but he still agreed to break up. I think SW is just having issues thinking up unique stories for all these shifters, but I would rather read a repetitive story instead of one that makes no sense in her world.

I also didn’t like that Tate did a lot of things that were just plain stupid - like egging on the crazy guy trying to kill Havana. The villain thinks she’s dead at one point, but Tate decides to correct his assumptions. For what??? So he tries to kill her again? Smart guy our hero is. 🤡

Anyways, overall, this wasn’t a bad read, but I was frequently frustrated by the lack of attention to detail.

Safe; both H&h have exes who try to get them back, so there’s plenty of OW/OM drama. They got together four months before the start of this book, and were exclusive to each other for the entire story.

Cut’n’Paste

Honestly, I am embarrassed that I ever liked any of Ms. Wright’s books. At some point, writers like Ms. Wright or Mina Carter or Celia Kyle stop the writing about wolf or bear shifters and start cut-and-pasting stories about werehedgehogs and werevoles. To that end, Ms. Wright tired of wolf shifters half way through her first set of books and started in on Pallas’ cats, birds, wolverines, snakes, and, in this book, Tasmanian Devils that smell worse than skunks. (It’s less sexy than Ms. Wright probably thinks that the characters spray noxious fluid from their anal sacs and that that fluid probably needs to be expressed and/or the sacs treated for infection occasionally.)

Since Ms. Wright is cut-and-pasting these books, all the characters are described as basically the same from book to book and the new female characters are named after places or things instead of having, well, names. Vienna sausage. HavaNigla. Barnum & Bailey. As(s)pen. I particularly liked the piece in this book where the characters appeared alphabetical. Aspen, Bailey, Camden, Deveraux/Dante, Ethan, Farrel, Gideon/Gita, Havana, I-something or other, Jamie, Koby. Pallas’ cats are called Pallas cats because it’s important to note the exclusion of the apostrophe. And the cats are “crazy”, whatever that means. All the were-animal they’re hooking up with are equally deranged and extremely violent, begging the question - why aren’t the characters being treated for their mental and behavioural problems? Every character is an “Alpha”, every woman who isn’t the fmc’s bestie is out to steal her man, and blah-blah kidnapping/fighting/were-animal trafficking. Yawn.

I adore Suzanne Wright and have read almost all of her books and all of her shifter stories. This is the first one that was somewhat of a disappointment for me and I could honestly have skipped reading.
Too much repetition...plus a couple that I didn't connect well with: Tate just didn't seem macho enough for the tough and strong Havana.....but I have to say Havana's friends Bailey and Aspen they stole this book. In fact all scenes with the three of them were truly the best parts of this book.
I am considering this book an anomaly .....I will still be eagerly awaiting with bated breath whatever is next from the divine Ms. Wright.
p.s. ....that epilogue ..what was the deal there? It was like the author felt compelled to spew out the names of all the characters from the Mercury and Phoenix Packs....the two prior series to this one. It was too short to give any context or feel for these characters.....totally unnecessary in my opinion!!!!!!

Book one in the series did not meet my expectations but for a lot of readers it did. But I love and adore SW books, I have read all of them, some were winners some weren't.

This one is a winner IMO. I really enjoyed it and the good thing is that I feel as if we are getting nearer to the Movement.

What I liked about this book is that Havana Ramos knows her worth and what she wants. She cut her losses and didn't turn into a doormat.

This book has a strong plot so what I don't get is why there is always o/w or o/m drama. Wouldn't one or the other be ok, why both? SW has a formula that she sticks to and most of the time it works as you can see with my four star rating here. I know after a dozen shifter books it is hard to come up with something fresh but laying off the drama lama with ex's would be nice.

Tate is the alpha of the Olympus Pride and I really liked him although he was somewhat confused with his feelings to begin with. However when he wanted to continue their "fling" I personally would have liked to have seen that he coaxed her with actions not with how great the chemistry is between them. I know a lot of you will see it differently.

I can also totally get on board with Bailey the black mamba and Aspen the bearcat. SW brings unique and different shifters to the table and it is awesome.

I can't wait for Aspen & Camden's book.

More, she shimmered with a feminine alpha energy that seemed to light her up from within. It glittered in those exotic, almond bluish-gray eyes that were framed with thick dark lashes.

First Impressions
When He’s An Alpha is the second book in the Olympus Pride series which is the current series that is being written by Suzanne Wright. At first glance, this book has a A typical theme that is in all of the shifter romances that this author has written. All the characters are alpha, can kick ass, and are fighters. While their set of circumstances are a bit different, there is a sense of typical style that can feel the “same” at times. But these books will have certain quirks that will work for many readers. I do love immersing myself in Suzanne Wright, but I will admit, that I don’t think that I could read a bunch of her books in order from each other. But every once in a while, it definitely has its own feel of being a “treat” but sometimes I do wish that I could get something different from these books.

“No one could ever replace Gaia for me. There’s no room in my head or heart for anyone else, and there isn’t enough of me left to give anyway. I’m not a full person without her, and I don’t wish I was. Because the parts of me she took with her when she died were all hers to take.”

Summary
Havana Ramos broke the golden rule of flings, and she let her emotions and her heart gets involved and now she will have to be the one to break the sexy relationship she has had with the alpha Tate. When Tate and Havana got together, they agreed that it would be for sex only, and emotions were too sticky. But when Havana overheard Tate talk with his brother about them and how it was just for a physical release, it was like the moment of splashing cold water on the face, clarity entered her mind and she knew what needed to be done before she became too emotionally invested Tate even though she feared she was too far into it. But when she tries to break it off with Tate, something happens that neither of them expects, that the relationship that has been building between them is two-sided. Tate doesn’t want to let Havana go. He has kept relationships simple mostly due to the betrayal he and his cat suffered and doesn’t want to risk being hurt again. But he is coming to realize how much Havana means to the both of them, and he will need to fight for her if he doesn’t want to lose her. But now there are dangerous men that are after Havana, and he wonders if he will be able to protect her and prove to her that he is worthy of fighting for,.

His cat hissed and clawed at him, wanting him to move, move, move and get to her. And the internal battle that Tate had been waging against the urge to brand her just … ignited. It became a rampant storm inside him that whirled and whirled and whirled. It then abruptly swept outward, smashing his mental shields into nothing. Like that, a primal knowledge hit him so hard it almost made his knees give out. He took a shuddering breath as several emotions rose up out of nowhere and thundered through him. Satisfaction. Certainty. Pride. Possessiveness. For months, he’d subconsciously prevented that primal knowledge from sinking in. Right then, he didn’t fight it. He let it take hold. Let himself accept it. Havana Ramos was his true mate.

What I Loved
There were so many aspects of the story that I definitely loved with every beat of my heart. I was pulled very quickly into this story. I had a blast with the sense of the humor that is reflected, there is some fun bonds of friendship that is built. I absolutely adored the three-way women’s friendship that is built with Havana and the women that she rooms with even though they are all a bit CRAZY!! But its the type of outrageous,, you can’t help but be amused. I did really respect how they always have Havana’s back but I did like that they aren’t like vengeful towards Tate in this situation that happens. The sexy scenes between Tate and Havana were super steamy and I absolutely loved it, Wright definitely knows how to write her sex scenes that is for sure. Tate was such an adorable hero, it was a delight to see him work to win Havana back in his life, but he also has vulnerabilities that I found so endearing. I did like that both Tate and Havana have relatable qualities to them. The sense of danger that builds within the story was pretty well thought out, and it kept me on my toes.

His cat puffed up in affront. “I don’t brood.” “So says every dominant male shifter. In reality, you’re all experts at”

What I Struggled With
The sense of sameness among this author’s characters, they are always around the same and have similar qualities but have little differences that if you are new to her writing you might not notice it, But I have read most of her books, and yeah, they feel the same to me. Like her heroes are the A typical hero in most romances, to be honest, so nothing new there. However, I like more personality dynamics in my heroines, and they are always alpha heroines who can kick ass and nothing different to them. For example in the world there are all types of women that are shapeshifters that aren’t always alpha females, some are more submissive in the pack but have their own strength. I would love to see more heroines like those (they deserve HEA’s too).

Overall View
I found When He’s An Alpha to be an engaging, edge-of-your-seat, thrilling paranormal romance that kept me on my toes and delivered in sparks of humor and paranormal delights.

This was what her inner devil wanted in a partner—a male who’d protect, treasure, and avenge Havana. And, feeling it was time, the animal let the mental door finally creak open. And the mating bond snapped into place.

I love this author's books, but this one not so much. It just felt far too similar to Wright's other books with the names of the characters changed. The only thing for me that was different, and not in a good way, was the confusion over just who the alpha was because I'm afraid Tate did not come across as al alpha. In fact, Havana owned his nut sack!

If it wasn't for the fact that the next book in the series is Aspen and Camden's, I'm not even sure I would read it.

Update: Havana and Tate remain my favorite couple in the series so far (but maybe Bailey and Zeke will give them a run for their money in Book 5)

I loved and hated this one. Well hate is a strong word. I'm a big fan of guy chase girl stories and it does have that, but you have to get through the first part of their relationship that I just didn't care for.

I find it hard to buy that they had such a shallow relationship for 4 months before Tate just couldn't stay away from Havana. Where was that pull when whey only saw each other briefly in the beginning. I needed to see that he was struggling to keep her at a distance the whole time.

What I did love was obviously how hard he chased her once he realized she was going to walk away. I also loved Havana. She had such an awesome attitude about things. She was very mature for the situations she was in and she didn't fall at Tate's feet. She had self respect.

Overall, I still enjoyed their story. Despite having things in it I didn't like, this author really knows how to draw you in. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

4.5 shifter smut stars!

If you follow any of my reviews, you know I love Suzanne Wright. Her books are on auto-buy for me so when I saw this up for pre-order well I was excited...

description

If you've read any of Wright's books, its obvious she follows a formula so if you're looking to dive into this book and expect a deep, emotional and thought provoking read...sorry my friend you aren't going to find that here. But, me personally, I know what to expect from her stories and I love them all the more for it.

This is the second book in The Olympus Pride series and features Tate and Havana. Tate and Havana had a fling and Havana decides to cut ties before she develops deeper feelings for Tate. However, Tate (who never wanted anything serious) is not as keen on her ending the relationship and his pallas cat is extremely upset about Havana not being his anymore. When Havana is targeted by the bad guy, Tate realizes she is his and has to win back Havana and her devil's trust so she too can see that they are fated. Throw in some danger, some torture and two annoying exes and you've got a fun ride lol.

Tate and Havana were good together I thought. While I think Tate lacked a little character development, he made up for it with his growly and possessive nature. Havana, like all of Wright's female leads was strong and kicked ass. However, I would have liked to have seen her a little more vulnerable/soft with Tate. I think their relationship needed some more "make love" mixed in with "lets f*ck." That isn't to say that I didn't immensely enjoy their sexy times together because I did.

One thing that surprised me about this was the secondary characters really took the main stage here along with Tate and Havana. Havana's friends, Bailey and Aspen were such a delight to read and it was obvious that Wright was setting a story up for Aspen and Camden. Whether it was intentional or not, I found that Bailey and Aspen stole the stage from Tate and Havana a few times. Their arguments and fights were hilarious!

description

The conflict in the story was well written and I think Wright did a nice job at pulling all the loose ends together. While this isn't my favorite of her shifter books and I do think I liked the first one better, this one still ranks high for me. I know some people have problems with her formulaic stories, but it works for me and I hope she doesn't stop.

Overall, a solid story with the kind of hero I love and a heroine that never lets anyone use her as a doormat. I CANNOT wait for the next one in this series.

Suzanne Wright's stories always deliver. I was immediately intrigued by the blurb to When He's An Alpha and could not even find it in me to care that this book was the second book in Wright's Olympus Pride series. All I saw was series of standalones and jumped right in! Tate and Havana were absolutely delicious!

What I loved more than anything was how strong and assertive Havana was. She's an independent woman and gave as good as she got. This story had an amazing extended cast of characters, sizzling heat, and lots of heart. I for I could not devour this story fast enough! 4 stars! ~Ratula

Oh my.

When He's an Alpha is the second installment in The Olympus Pride series. In it, you will meet Havana and Tate. At first, you know that they were friends with benefits. Neither wanted anything commitment wise but were equally content when around one another. Until they weren't. Well, okay, until Havana overheard him saying that he didn't want anything more than what they already had.

After breaking up with him, it was pretty clear to everyone that surrounded them that they were not happy one freaking bit. She definitely had more feelings for him and he was just trying to figure out what actually happened. Of course he also had these huge feelings for her but it took him forever to figure that out. Luckily, Havana and her devil made him and his cat grovel. Boy did they grovel hard.

As for the romance? Well, I ate that shit up. I never read the first book but I'm very intrigued to jump into it. I also really want more from Havana's friends - they were freaking hilarious. I can't wait for them to find love because I just think it will be amazing to watch. I mean.. if anyone could tame their animals that is.

In the end, this was very hard to put down and I'm very excited to jump into the next book. I need more drama and animals being crazy. This pride kept me on my toes and I'm glad that Ashlynn is out of the picture. Hopefully she stays gone. Forever.

“I’m written into your skin, your bones, your soul. You have the same deep, absolute claim to me. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Well...I liked the story and the romance was pretty decent- but I'll be honest in that I had the most fun when reading Havana, Aspen, and Bailey's little crazy squabble moments. Take that as you will. But Kudos again to Wright for the fun unique shifter categories! We've got:

Image Bear Cat
Image Black mamba

Stinkin cute!
But, honestly I think some parts of the story were a little cliche with the "I like you but can't be with you...but can't stay away from you" moments- the ex's were pretty predictable, and the baddy wasn't all that exciting.

Plus, if I don't have to read another woman calling a female character they don't like a "skank, hoe bag, whore, slut, or heifer" (as stated a lot in this book) again I think I'll be just a little bit happier. Thanks universe.

description

Also the sex was pretty steamy at times--but I kind of laughed that every time they would get into it Havana had to basically run away from him so he could catch and dominate her, and although she was a bad ass fighter and super strong she was always describes as 'kicking him and punching him and swearing at him' but it was more light play fighting? So in my head I just kept seeing it as goofy baby kicks and punches...

Anyhoo looks like the next book is Aspen and Camden, but I'll be honest that I kind of want to read the hot mess that will be Bailey's romance...and dare I say to possibly the 'spawn of satan' Damian?

Re-read June 2025
I can't believe I've read and re-read this book so many times and never left a review.

Firstly, let me say up front: Suzanne Wright just somehow always hits my happy buttons. I know she isn't for everyone, and I know that her books can get a bit repetitive if you read several in a row, but that all said, I really like them.

This one was extra fun, imo. You have a FMC / MMC who've been having a casual fling for 4 months. As the book starts, the FMC Havana has started catching feelings and so she has decided to break it off. The MMC has been super clear that the fling will never grow into more, and he's kept her carefully at arm's length throughout. He doesn't treat her like an object, but they don't talk about their days, don't share stuff about their past, don't go on dates. They just hook up, maybe Netflix and chill, but nothing more personal. Havana is making a healthy choice for herself.

The MMC Tate is not having it. He's a lot more into her than he'd let himself acknowledge, and he's deeply unhappy that she's breaking it off.

Add in a bit of danger that throws them together, and you have a delicious, spicy book that is a lot of fun.
