"She hides a shocking secret"Ramon Velaquez, heir to the Velaquez winery, clearly stated his cardinal rule to Lauren Maitland--he can't promise her more than a red&-hot affair. While she heard the words, her heart wasn't listening, and she left with more than the memory of their blissful night together...Two years later, Ramon finds Lauren again. She's independent, strong, and mother to a little boy. One look at the child and Ramon knows he's his. There's only one thing for a marriage of convenience--or the sake of his son and heir!
I grew up without a TV, let alone DVD’s, computer games etc that my kids spend so much time engrossed in, but I learned to read at an early age and from then on I was always entertained – so much so that my friends used to hide their books when I visited them because all I wanted to do was read!
When I was a teenager I discovered Mills & Boon romances in my local library, and so began a lifelong love affair. I still remember that feeling of anticipation when I settled down with a pile of books - all bearing the famous rose logo - knowing that I would be drawn into a world of love, passion and emotional intensity that I have never found in any other books. I enjoy reading a wide range of books, especially historical novels, and I am a big fan of Agatha Christie, mainly I think because her characters seem so real, but I love romances and unashamedly admit that I only want to read books with a guaranteed happy ending. Reading is my joy and pleasure and I don’t want to cry buckets at the end of a book or have my sleep disturbed by its gruesome content.
For me, the characters in Harlequin Mills & Boon romances are the key. I love reading and writing about strong, alpha heroes and feisty, independent heroines who find that they can’t fight the blazing attraction between them.
When I married my own tall, dark, but sadly not wealthy hero, we moved out of London to the Kent coast and started a family that grew and grew. I adore my six children, and when they were small I loved being a stay-at-home mum, but there can be days, as I’m sure many of you know, when you feel isolated and – dare I say it – bored of conversing with three-year-olds. Harlequin Mills & Boon romances were my life-line and my sanity and I read them whenever I had a spare five minutes (in the bath, pacing the floor at three am with colicky baby on one shoulder and a book in the other hand!)
My imagination soared and I decided to try and write a book myself. My first attempt was typed up on a manual type-writer with the full-stop key and the letter p missing. Luckily my hero and heroine were not called Paul and Poppy, but it still meant going over my manuscript with a pen to fill in the gaps!
That first book was duly rejected as were my next two. I suppose I was disheartened and by now I had four small children and very little spare time, so although I continued to read romances, I gave up writing. It wasn’t until my youngest son started school that I tried writing again. I was struggling to come to terms with the death of my darling mum Gabrielle and writing became my therapy. Mum had always nagged me to get on and write a book and had an unshakeable belief that I would one day be published – I’m so glad that she was proved right and my biggest regret is that she isn’t here to share my success with me.
I wrote two more books which were both rejected by HM&B, but I was given some advice on my writing from the editorial team that encouraged me to try again. Third time lucky certainly applied to me – the day I received ‘the call’ was exactly four years after Mum had died. It was one of the most exciting moments of my life - but instead of chatting to the editor about contracts I had to dash off and pick my sick daughter up from school. Reality is never far away in my house!
I have now had nine books published - At the Sheikh's Bidding was released in September 08. My next book, Argentinian Playboy, Unexpected Love-Child will be out in the UK in July 09, and The Greek Billionaire's Innocent Princess in the UK in August 09. I have just had my twelfth book accepted and am already busy on my thirteenth. Now that my children are growing up I am able to write every day between 9 am and 3 pm, but often I become so involved with my characters that I sneak off to write again in the evening!
I feel I must be one of the luckiest people in the world to be doing something that I love, but I work hard at my luck and I believe that w
No new ground here, but it’s a solid “I’m only your mistress?” story with a secret baby tossed in for good measure. H/h have been having an affair for six months. Heroine finds out she’s pregnant. She asks the hero the status of their relationship. The answer: She is his mistress. He will marry a Spanish noblewoman.
Heroine breaks it off without telling him about the baby. Fast forward 18 months and hero turns up at her law firm. He wants her legal expertise and to see if the spark is still there.
All of CS’s heroine’s have no backbone when the hero puts on their sexy moves. This heroine is no different. After attending a ball and falling into bed together, the heroine is summoned because her son had a febrile seizure.
Hero recognizes his son right away. Heroine is ill with the flu, so he brings them both back to Spain. Sponging ensues. Heroine is bullied into marriage.
They get along fine, working out how the heroine will continue her career as a lawyer in Spain. The black moment comes when the heroine thinks he’s cheating every Friday afternoon, but he’s really swimming with a disabled friend.
I reread it because someone said he was celibate but he wasn't. It was just his thoughts and he didn't seem to mind if she had a lover, well kind of, I guess, but he probably most likely I am almost positive he wasn't celibate. But at least we didn't get details about it. He just said no one could assuage his sex drive. Yuk But he did miss her in bed and wanted her back. And even when he was cruel you could tell he loved her but I hated that he just blamed her for not telling him but he was pretty cruel in the way he treated her that night. I did like how much he loved his son. And I knew the wannabe OW was just a wannabe. I added a star because I am a major freak about celibAcy. So don't judge the book based on my review. I am a seriously jealous bitter woman with a tendency to over react. My poor husband. I will never forgive him or let him forget. That's why we are still married. I can't divorce him and let him be happy with someone else now can I. Inconcievable! Lol
This book has trope I usually like: the chick who finds out she is a mistress and didn't even know it. Some authors can overcome the hero's initial ass-hattery and arrogance and prove dementia-preventing-love with a solid good panicky grovel, but not this time.
Lauren is in a passionate affair with Ramon and, shockarama, finds herself facing a little blue line. Over the course of the evening, the big R makes it clear he is not in it for the long haul. He is a Duque back in Spain and needs to marry another blue blood. How he treats her in this one scene is enough for justifiable homicide, but the h spurns his generous offer of allowing her to stay his mistress. Words ever woman wants to hear. "Yes, you
Two years later, the H is back and manipulating Lauren into working for him. Nice change of pace, Ms. Shaw, she is an attorney and not a cleaner or the ever-present PA.
Blah, blah, MOC. Passion out the wahoo. OW.
Suddenly, he is head over heels. I just didn't buy it. Plus he was so horribly arrogant and cruelly dismissive.
She was his mistress for six months, then found out she was pregnant. The same night the hero told her he only considered her as his temporary mistress and he would one day marry a suitable gentlewoman from Spanish royalty. Come on. We are in the 21 century, most royal houses of Europe have married commoners, this was too far stretched, and btw the heroine is a successful layer. Whatever. She decides to dump him but not o tell him about the child. This was an awful act, because even if he was a shallow playboy he was no criminal and deserved to know he had a child on the way. One year and a half he’s back because he was not able to forget her and to move on. His father died, he had familiar issues and now he wants a taste of his favorite mistress before marrying the right girl. They have sex, because of usual tbs that gets all heroines in hp and beyond, and then he finds out accidentally he has a son. Usual self righteousness Blackmail and threats. Marriage in Spain. Heroine who doesn’t trust him a bit. Heroine leaves her career to be a mother and a wife. I hated most of this. She acted very dishonestly, he had to know e ad a child. I didn’t like the blackmail bit, it’s always the same old, same old. And no, I don’t like she chose to leave a job for which she had worked so much. Maybe she will study in Spain and become a lawyer there, the hero allows her to study. Oh be still my heart. Celibacy unclear for him, it’s not specified, but it’s hinted he wasn’t attracted to any other woman after her so he went back looking bfor her. Maybe he did maybe he didn’t. The heroine of course was a nun.
The heroine Lauren is a very successful lawyer. She has a casual affair with the hero Ramon who happens to be a Spanish Duke and is determined to marry a suitable wife preferable a Duchess.
Lauren ends the relationship even though she knows she is pregnant and hides her pregnancy from Ramon. 18 months later the hero discovers he is now a father and proposes a loveless marriage of convenience.
Loved this book. This romance was very intense. The heroine was fierce, independent and a hotshot lawyer but she kept sabotaging her relationships with her emotional baggage. She has lots of insecurities from an unstable childhood.
Ramon was sexy and a decent man with a strong sense of duty. He embraced fatherhood with a passion and he made me laugh with his belief that his son was a 10 months old genius!
A wonderful read, absolutely loved the characters and how all explanations were give as to how and why the characters beliefs were and their behaviour
basic plot is of secret baby,Ramon is only son of Duke and its been drilled in his head that he has to marry a spanish aristrocrat family girl and provide heir and do his duty so he wants to enjoy his freedom, his reputation is that of a playboy his affairs does'nt last longer then few weeks and he does'nt trust women cause of a bad experience, then Lauren and Ramon meet,Ramon is in love with her but keeps saying to himself no he only sees her as his mistress and keeps denying to himself he loves her, Lauren loves him, then she is expecting their child and she asks him what is their future to which Ramon cruelly makes her see that she is only a mistress to him and will always be that only cause his duty is to marry a spanish aristrocrat girl and provide heir,Lauren is heart broken and ends their affair then and there after 18 months they meet again and from there again their love journey starts again
Ramon liked his character he is a moralistic man and he knows what is expected of him and he is ready to fulfill all the duty when time comes but till then he wants to enjoy his freedom,he loves his family a lot,Ramon is a good son, good brother, good business man and adorable father also, but i disliked one thing about him when he comes to know of his son he is angry i understand that but the way he saya Lauren is not a good mother cause she leaves Mateo in daycare for her job and dismisses all her efforts and hardwork to give Mateo the best as to nothing,he says bluntly its not as good as it should be he only sees how she hid her son but he never sees Mateo is such a happy child and Lauren regrets and explains her decision to keep Mateo a secret and apologises for it more then once but till the end he never acknowledges her apologies but when he understands Laurens need for her independence and to keep working he supports her
Lauren is a great strong willed woman, absolutely liked the fact she never gives away her independence, she has been through a lot in her childhood and has trusting problems but she is a great mother she always give Mateo the best of the best no matter how hard she has to work but she gives him the best and Mateo is wonderful kid,the rejections Lauren faced felt really bad for her but the way she stood and handled everything was applaudable
So the story goes like this; the female character, Lauren is a successful lawyer, who comes from a broken home after her father walks out on her and her mother. Lauren still has emotional scarring from this time. She has been having an affair with the rich Ramon, the male character, with whom she has fallen in love and just discovered she is pregnant. Ramon comes from Spanish nobility, and is a self confessed playboy who fears the day he will have to settle down and marry a suitable blue-blooded Spanish wife. He considers Lauren only as his latest mistress and when Lauren discovers this she makes the hard decision to break things of and have her baby alone. In the time that they are apart Ramon finds himself thinking about Lauren and devises a plot to get her to work for him, which is full of tension especially when he finds out Lauren has kept his son a secret. He then forces them both to Spain and sets out to make Lauren marry him.
This is an okay book, I have to be honest and thought it would be slightly better. I'm not saying its bad, it's just okay! I'm sure you get the idea! The start of the book was good, Lauren seemed like a great character, she seemed to be independent and fiery, and when she ended the relationship after finding out how little she meant to Ramon I thought "go Lauren!". However, once her secret was discovered her character seemed to go from independent and fiery to needy and a bit of a push over. It also seemed to me that as someone who had experience of men who take women for granted from her fathers behaviour she wouldn't have got involved with Ramon in the first place. Of course you can't help who you fall for, I'm sure many of us have learnt that the hard way!
However despite this, the passion between the two characters was intense and the banter between them was also very good, this was definitely a highlight in the book!
His Unknown Heir is not a super exciting book with tons of angst or betrayal. Instead, it is about two strong, independent people who try their best to compromise and make their relationship work when they realized it was a relationship they both wanted.
Lauren is great. She's a smart, hard-working lawyer who values her independence and refuses to rely on anyone for either emotional or financial help. She is part of a big law firm specializing in commercial property and she's very proud of her career. When she meets Ramon she's more than capable of conducting a no-strings affair with him since she understands where he's coming from: they both value their careers and are uninterested in pursuing something more serious with the goal of marriage.
It isn't until she finds herself pregnant that she really allows herself to think about love and a long-term relationship. Lauren has a very logical side to her and she plays everything close to the chest. Even when Ramon was telling her that she was only mistress material she did not start throwing things or tell him that she was in love with him. Instead she just called things off with him and walked away.
Ramon is so sweet. Yes, he's the typical HP alpha male who thinks everyone should simply bow to his commands but when he finds out that he is a father, he throws himself into taking care of his son with enthusiasm and determination. He feeds him, changes his diapers, gives him baths, etc. Ramon is simply in love with his son from first sight. He also tries his best to see where Lauren is coming from when she tells him that giving up her career to become a full-time wife and mom is not something she is comfortable with. He tried arguing with her about it but when he realized that she was serious, he did his best to find a compromise that would make them both happy.
Ramon is not a complete jerk, which is what really makes him wonderful. He's arrogant but he's not cruel or mean. He doesn't try to "punish" Lauren for keeping his son from him. Instead, he tries to build a relationship with her based upon his strong belief that a child needs both his mother and father to grow up happy and healthy.
There was some drama stemming from the fact that Lauren has trust issues but these two are solid and I just love how their relationship played out. They're both strangely mature for such damaged and stubborn people, always putting their son first while trying to work out the mechanics of their own relationship. They're both quick to apologize, which was refreshing, and this made any possibility for a prolong angst fest nil.
I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes their characters strong and compassionate, who are willing to make sacrifices but also acknowledge their own needs while seeking a good compromise between life and love.
I enjoyed this book. Ramon was the perfect asshole alpha. He was over the top, possessive and it was his way or no way. I liked Lauren, at times she frustrated me but nothing that would ruin the book. He resolve toward Roman is understandable, so was her need to be independent.
Anyway, it was good.
Lauren falls in love with Roman and the day she was going to tell him she loved him and was pregnant was the day he was a dick and atraight out said she was only good for sex. A year and a half later, Ramon seeks her services as a lawyer because he missed her (but never admits it to her) and wants her back as a mistress. Lauren wants nothing to do with him because she's still heartbroken but he blackmails her to work for him anyway. He finds out about his son on accident than blackmails her again to marry him or be taken to court so he can demand custody, move to Spain with his son and with his connections and cash he would win.
She agrees to marriage and but whole miscommunication of feelings ends up in a complete misunderstanding about how much they both want and need each other. Anywho it's cute.
Dominadores. Fruto do Pecado.
Not too bad. I couldn't figure out if Lauren had given her v-card to Ramon. I didn't feel the love between them anyways with the brief prologue to feel for their HEA. It was a drag by the second half of the book too.
Ramon was however an alpha lover. He also took tender care of Lauren when she's sick. The extended mistress trope was a yawn-fest!
It was a great read, especially the stress put on Lauren pursuing a career, and in spite of being angry with her, I just loved the way Ramon cared for her.
Run of the mill secret baby story with no real surprises. I can get behind a good secret baby story if the reason for it is solid and/or different. But here is was not real solid and even worse in my opinion, the heroine is an older, well educated, gainfully employed at a good job, woman. She should have known better. I generally give an 18 year old making a bad decision a bit of a pass because that's just a mixed up kid making a bad decision but that wasn't the case here. Other than that standard stuff.
An OK "secret baby" story combined with "you're my mistress/ no I'm not" trope. Though I'd just read this a few weeks ago, I had to go back & re-read this so I could remember what this was about.
I never quite liked this novel, there was always something holding it back. The emotions didn't seem real. Honestly, it was kind of messed up. It felt super bland.
It was ok, But I could never get past his "I am going to keep coming back into your life. But you will remain mistress material" attitude.
The hero is Spanish nobility. Finds a good sex partner in the heroine, a lawyer from London. When she gets pregnant, she wants to 'talk'. He just wants to get into bed.
Thing sour between them. She walks out because he can never come out of mistress mode. 2 years later, he comes charging into her life again. This time there is a kiddo at home waiting. But our lady is still ready to drop into bed with him, he is just irresistible you see.
I cant tolerate stories where pregnancy and the struggles of single motherhood are just glossed over. And the hero just comes back waltzing into the girl's life. Even worse, starts yelling because she dint tell him about the kid earlier !!!
Serious, life altering experiences are just casual plot points, and way too much time is devoted in how he makes her go weak in the knees. Not relatable. Offensive even.
Chantelle Shaw’s h’s are typically blonde and slender. No variety here.
I believe in his love for his son, but I don’t believe in his love for her.
The man is fickle. During their affair he insists he can only marry a woman of blue blood like him. At their wedding night he says he doesn’t care, even if she would have green blood. I don’t believe him. He would never have married her if she hadn’t been the mother of his son. So much so for his ‘love’ for her. 🙄
2,5 - 3 stars. It’s an okay read but not something I would want to read again.
this was an easy quick read. typical HP w/HEA. i liked that lauren had a career & stood her own ground despite her loving ramon. ramon ... ugh, such an annoying guy treating lauren always as a mistress & not someone to respect. even when they met 18 months later & he wanted to reunite w/her, he viewed her only as a mistress & not a girlfriend. what an ass! even after their marriage he would never treat her as his wife ... so annoying hence the 3 stars.
Love can happen like a bolt of lightning or come on easily like a breath of fresh air. I'm this case, I think it was a little of both. There were so many opposites of the same coin in this story. It was maddening in some parts, but blissful in others. I consider it a good read.
my aunt said it was quick but good read to get out of a reading slump…i’m not big on eroticas in the first place, but this one was worse than some. the female lead is absolutely spineless. the male lead is controlling and borderline abusive. this reads more like unstable parenting and stockholm syndrome than anything else. but hey, at least it was a quick read.
Okay the hero in this needed to calm the heck down. Especially in the end. He blamed the heroine for everything! 'You kept my son from me, you want to work, you have daddy issues' Uh yeah cause you never speak to her! She is alone not knowing what the hell the hero is thinking most of the time.
I loved this story about how a lack of communication can cause a couple to misunderstand each other. Trust is needed for a marriage to work. Look forward to reading more by this author.
Mediocre read with Spanish lover and sexy voluptuous English rose with TBS. I lost interest about 30% despite secret baby trope. I sympathized with neither MC. One positive thing was that the heroine was a lawyer and not a secretary.
