Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine were a duo, "threeo" and eventually a "sixxo" formed by South London friends Jim Morrison and Les Carter. They had 14 Top 40 singles in the UK and made 7 albums. This is their story as told by singer and guitarist Jim Bob.
1) I read Goodnight Jim Bob whilst listening to the music of Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. 2) Carter USM was my favourite band for a number of years in the early '90s. 3) Their music absolutely holds up 25 years later. 4) The book itself is a charming look at a period in indie music that I've always been interested in, told by someone who was there. It's a fascinating point of view from which to look at the nature of life as a working musician at the tail end of the 20th century. 5) Jim Bob's prose style is brisk, and fun, and funny, and relentlessly readable. 6) Reading music biographies while listening to the artist about whom you're reading makes for an immensely immersive experience that I'd recommend to any music lover. 7) If you liked Carter USM, you'll certainly enjoy this book. 8) If you have no idea who Carter USM were, there's a good chance that you will still enjoy this book. 9) I briefly had my hair cut like Jim Bob from Carter USM in high school. 10) Good heavens, but people beat the shit out of me...
An interesting, apparently honest insight into the world of pop stardom. I cannot say I learnt much, or this read changed me as a person. But it was certainly interesting and entertaining. A little excessive use of hyperbole made it hard to discern fact and fiction at times.
An entertaining, witty and quite candid into Life on the road with Carter USM. Jim Bob has a talent for writing, very similar to the song lyrics he produces. Sometimes challenging to read and sympathise, but always honest and heartfelt
When I was discovering indie music as a teenage girl, Carter USM were one of my first. They hold a special place in my heart. I loved reading this book, and hearing Jim Bob's side of the story. I love the way he writes, and look forward to reading his other books.
