England's soccer coach is under pressure to resign—their poor showing in the World Cup qualifiers is evoking such hostile press and angry fanmail that rookie PI Steve Strong is hired to protect him. England's prospects receive a further blow when a former key player is found dead and their goalkeeper goes into hiding. The trail leads him from the gambling casinos of London to deep beneath the streets of Vienna, where England's last crucial match is being played.
A light but entertaining football-based romp in which our hero uncovers untoward and deadly goings-on after being asked to provide security for the England manager and his team. It’s fast-paced, laddish and at times very funny, though it should be said that Andrews occasionally tries a bit too hard to squeeze in one clever line too many. Nevertheless an amusing and interesting diversion from my usual holiday reading fare of crime novels.
