Aww this was a fun story. Not at all like an HP, but based on the other reviews, I wasn't expecting the high drama and angst of a typical HP.

The H/h meet cute when the heroine falls into the hero at a restaurant. They have instant attraction, but hero is on the rebound after walking out on his girlfriend of 2 1/2 years when she wanted to marry. The heroine also has trust issues because her father was a conman.

Their phones are mixed up so they agree to meet that night at the same restaurant to exchange them. The H/h indulge in some phone flirting and the H/h continue the mutual seduction over dinner. The heroine invites him to her apartment, but the hero turns her down - not trusting himself being on the rebound.

The push and pull of these two commitment phobes continue for the rest of the story. The author does a great job capturing the giddiness of love at first sight and the roller coaster of establishing a relationship with someone you're so attracted to but don't really know. There are also so class issues - hero is upper crust, heroine is not.

Both the H/h are matched in the intensity of their feelings and in their confusion. The story ending is closer to chick-lit -

The heroine is a dog groomer and her acid test for a relationship is how the man feels about dogs. The hero passes with flying colors in a scene with her sister's slobbering dog.

Why I read it:
I read the review over at AAR and I decided to give this new-to- author a try. I'm glad I did.

What it's about:
Chelsea London (yes, I know - but the characters roll their eyes too, so it's all good) has a dog grooming business in Melbourne. She meets her sister (Kensington!) for breakfast at a swisho restaurant where you have to hand over your mobile phone before you go in. She (literally) trips over a gorgeous specimen of manhood (Damien Halliburton, our hero and the day-trading magnate of the title) and it's lust at first sight. Still, until they phones get inadvertently swapped, both think that's that. When they re-connect (har har) each thinks it must be "fate". But, Damien is fresh out of a long term relationship - his ex wanted marriage or nothing and got nothing. Damien thinks he can't do marriage so he's not offering long term.

What worked for me:
Oh, I liked ths one. I enjoyed the humour and the repartee between the various characters (well, mostly). It read like a rom-com movie - my favourite kind. I enjoyed the dialogue and I liked the characters and they took me a long way to mostly overlooking what I saw as the book's shortcomings. But more of that later.

I liked the dialogue between the two sisters. Here, Kensington, happily married with loads of kids, is urging Chelsea to get with the programme and put herself out there.

"How do you think a girl gets herself married these days?: Kensey asked. "It takes putting herself on the shop shelf to begin with."
"I like dating", Chelsea said. "Especially men with muscles and dark eyes and all their teeth. I'm on the shelf.".
"Right. With a big Do Not Feed The Animal sign slung around your neck. One sideways glance at another woman, one bounced cheque, one hint he might have feet of clay and you bite the hand that fondles you. Whereas that creature over there is so-o-o on the shelf fluorescent lights aim towards him wherever he goes."

Chelsea doesn't suffer fools or bimbos and her words can have a bite. Like here when she can't find the check ticket to get her phone back from the condescending restaurant hostess:

"I seem to have misplaced it."
"It will be hot pink. Hard to miss."
"Yet visualising it still hasn't helped it appear."

Damien's gorgeous, rich, a member of Melbourne's elite. And he's smooth with the lines too. It takes a little while for him to understand it's not his phone in his pocket and there are a couple of confusing phone calls. Later, when he's trying to convince Chelsea to meet up with him to swap their phones, he says:

"And when you get back to Chic [magazine] to explain why I was not you, if they mention anything about my predilection for zebra print underwear they're making the whole thing up."
Chelsea leaned back in her chair and began to play with her hair. "I'm not sure Chic are in the habit of spreading rumours like that about random guys."
"It's a scandal. Best kept under wraps for all our sakes."

And later, when he's playing catch up after she's suspicious of the smooth and she asks him why he called, really, he says:

"Because you're the girl who fell into my arms, and spilled my coffee and stole my phone and gatecrashed my thoughts until I had to admit to her that I've been seriously thinking that a two minute phone swap isn't what we ought to be doing tonight.".

Sigh.

It's a sexy little story too

"And the idea of you in a wet T shirt almost short-circuited my brain right now".
At his words, she actually felt her uncooperative breasts straining against the cotton of her long-sleeved T shirt. "I have no boobs. Wetting them is not exciting."
"It's exciting to me."

See what I mean with the smooth?

I liked the references to Melbourne. I am an Adelaide girl but I've been there and it seemed familiar to me without being so "Australian" as to alienate an overseas reader or indeed, me. I liked the Australianisms in the story - they were real and not cringeworthy - eg "a stone's throw away" and that it's a "mobile phone" in Australia, not a "cell phone". There were no dingoes or kangaroos in the main street (hooray). It felt true, while at the same time, it could have been set in any reasonable-sized city.

There was the opportunity for a "Big Mis" late in the story and I'm glad Ms. Blake chose to have the characters step up and actually talk to each other.

What didn't (work for me):
I said that mostly I liked the dialogue between the characters. But there were a few exceptions. Damien's best mate is Caleb. At one point in the story he is warning Damien away from Chelsea and says "Everything I say I say out of love.". Erm, no. I don't think that's something an Aussie hetero male would say to his friend. Maybe he'd say "I'm just looking out for you" or "I'm just watching your back" but using the "L" word? Not so much. Also, later in the book, Caleb is described as not the "blackguard" others thought him. Blackguard? In a contemporary? Maybe a better word choice would have been man-whore. They are small things overall but they threw me out of the story a bit.

Most of the conflict was because of Damien's conviction that he wasn't a marrying kind of man. I'm not sure I really understood it. And, he got over it real quick. I believed at the end of the story that he was a marrying man but it was too quick - so I guess that means I didn't totally buy the conflict.

Which brings me to.

The romance was quick. I mean really quick. It happened over the course of about a week. Even though it's an HP, a week? I could certainly believe that they were falling in love and were working their way to a HEA but the "I love you" and "let's move in together" in only a week? When the hero starts off the week thinking he's not the type to EVER get married? I'm not sure I bought it. I did want to though.

What else?
When I finished the book, I gave it a B+ and my notes read "fun sexy read, nicely Australian, hero to die for, some mate banter seemed unrealistic and ? blackguard. Would have liked time frame to be longer than a week. I will read more from this author."

Thinking about it later, the whole time frame/hero conflict thing bothered me more and I wondered if I should change the grade. In the end I decided not to. When I was reading the book I was enjoying it so much that the time frame and the hero's conflict weren't a huge deal - both things took on more significance to me after I was finished and thought about it some more. Overall, I think the grade should be about my enjoyment of the story and I should stick with my first thoughts. And, I will definitely read more from this local (and really, very good) author.

Grade: B+

3.5* Fun little book set in Melbourne, Australia. As usual, the title is ridiculous and has little or nothing to do with the book. Once you've read the book, the cover picture of the suit-and-tie guy with the sleek lady dress in black will make you laugh.

Mostly this was an entertaining story, well-written and humorous. I especially liked the last part, where the "guy goes after girl" scene wasn't over in a flash, but went on a while. It felt more realistic to have them both fumbling to get it right, say the right words, express themselves clearly. I'm always frustrated when romance books have the guy or girl rushing in at the end and saying "I was wrong!" and they fall into each other's arms...The End. While this was still solidly romance fiction, it felt more satisfying than most.

I absolutely loved this book. I've even read it twice, which something I never do with a HP. I don't know why I haven't read more of this author. Maybe I'll read it again and then do a better review.

The story starts when Chelsea London, an owner of a pet-grooming business, swaps her phone with Damien H, a magnate that just came out of a bad relationship. Hilarity ensues as they try to get their own phones back from each bother and fight their sizzling attraction to each other...and eventually give in.

Adorable. Absolutely adorable!
This is my first time reading a book from Ally Blake. I loved loved loved it!!!

I find the plot chick-litty yet the steamy scenes are A+. The heroine is a feisty independent woman and I like that in all novels. The hero is hero material, haha.

The development of the plot is okay. I had fun reading about the characters' lives.

Other Thoughts:
The title is misleading. I don't remember the magnate proposing an indecent proposal-his proposals weren't serious enough to be called as such, haha.

The one thing I dislike is the one thing I more often than not dislike in most Harlequins. It's too hurried. Still, the plot and way of writing makes up for it. 4/5 !!! ☺

As usual Harlequin swept the bottom of the barrel for the title. But it's a fun little book, like one of the Little Black Dress stories. Damien and Chelsea's come from different worlds but meet when they bump into each other, literally, at a Melbourne restaurant. Their phones are accidentally switched, and hilarity and romance ensues as they search for each other and attempt to get to know each other.

I couldn't connect with this story, I felt like it was a bit too wordy and didn't feel the chemistry between the hero and heroine.

Sweet yet slow-paced romance
4 stars

After three nuisance calls, Chelsea London finally realises that she's accidentally swapped phones with someone in the restaurant that same morning. Knowing her luck, she'll go all the way back to town to have it belong to a middle aged man with paunch.

Luckily for her, the person with her phone is deliciously handsome and super rich. What a shame that he's so ridiculously out of her league. But Damien Halliburton always gets what he wants, and happily for Chelsea - he wants her!

Set in Melbourne, Australia, this was an enjoyable and sweet tale if a little slow paced. Chelsea and Damien were likeable and real characters and you really feel their chemistry with each other. The writing was wonderful, especially the dialogue which was witty and fun at all times.

The premise was amusing and believable but with the whole story taking place in under a week, you really have to suspend reality to believe in the happily ever after. I also found that some scenes dragged out quite a lot and I felt that, at times, there could have been less talk and more action.

Overall, this was a fun, well-written story that was easy to read and perfect for a quiet afternoon if you enjoy the Modern Heat line. 4 stars.

This was a stupid book. It started out pretty good with the whole phone swapping and dating (even thoughthe whole her thinking he's a stalker was very over the top). Then, it went down hill from there. They fell in love within only a week of knowing each other? Really? She asked him to move in after knowing him for one week? Really? Don't let me even get started on the disconnected conversations they kept having. They start talking about something and suddenly she goes off into a totally different conversation to try to weird him out.

I've read bad romance books from before and this one is definitely counted as one of them.

Con esta novela sentí que me falto más romance, más desarrollo, no hubo cliché en ninguna parte, me costo terminarlo.
Me dejo con ganas de más!

For a short read, I liked it. All the fun and drama were there. Ally Blake wrote a convincing story and the title was quite misleading as there wasn't anything indecent about the proposal. The guy was honest to a fault about what to expect in their affair - he's not the long-term type, he didn't make any promises

It's usually us females who fall first and Chelsea is the perfect example of a heroine who's afraid to show her vulnerability to someone she wishes would love her back. I liked the circumstances of their meeting, I felt the "schoolgirl crush" Chelsea did when her feelings were described and it's a good feeling too, makes one jittery and lightens the mood.

Speaking of mood, it's a light read with a little dramatic history on Chelsea's part. Characters developed considerably in a short span of time and it's just a quickie read so one can't expect something deep in this.

This was really cute - snappy narrative and dialogue. As is often the case, the events of the book take place over a really short period of time (a week), and this makes me experience more skepticism than I really enjoy while reading a romance. Also, the background issues of the characters that lead to the conflict were kind of undeveloped. Well, a lot was kind of undeveloped, except for the charming dialogue and description. But the overall sparkle of the book sold me on it. 3.5 stars.

*deep sigh* the dude's last name is very off-putting and their flirting isn't nearly as charming/interesting as I think it's meant to be. it's very "he's a hot dude she's a hot chick therefore they must want each other" and frankly I can't give a shit about a man who is best friends with a probably-a-pedophile (the whole perving on the teenage cloakroom girl was gross).

I pushed on for a bit, but I simply don't care about either of them, didn't feel any chemistry, and was frankly bored.

I went back and forth between loving and hating the main character, Chelsea. Unfortunately, most of the hating happened near the end, so I was left with an even more negative impression. Quick, easy read.

The story had a great start. Both characters had a chemistry. But I got dismayed as to how fast everything happened between the two. What?? It happened in just barely a week. Err something was really missing here

There were several things that just threw me out of this story. For example, can you imagine a multi-millionaire in the stock exchange world with bad English?

It was a-okay. A bit different from other hlq presents. The story is normal, no high drama here. Just like our normal life, I guess. Light and believable story.

Chelsea is wary of men and abandonment, but she eyes up Damien at a restaurant and thinks he'd be a great affair, but their little interaction at the restaurant is short and too quickly passes. Damien has also never been so intrigued by a woman. So when they realize that they have each other's phones, they take advantage of the opportunity to get to know each other better. Things turn lusty rather quickly and before they know it, they're spending the night together. But Damien knows he cannot do long-term relationships, so he makes it clear to Chelsea that this is temporary. At first, Chelsea is on board, but she begins to realize that she's in love with him and that this can only end in her heartbreak, so she ends it. Damien is left wondering what he can do to keep Chelsea in his life and whether he's willing to risk hurting her to take the chance at being happy together.

What's with all these deceptive titles? There really isn't anything indecent about the magnate's proposal here...in fact it's the pet groomer's proposal that is initially indecent. After that, everything is pretty mutual and not really all that indecent. Just sayin... First off, most of the stars are for the author's fresh writing style, which is infused with unexpected and not OTT humor and also because of the unique set up for these characters. This was a meeting and plot that did not feel recycled or cliche. And the characters had some very nice, witty banter that had me smiling throughout. I really enjoyed reading their interactions and their chemistry was pretty hot (though I did have trouble visualizing the whole restaurant under the table scene). Of the two characters, Chelsea and her hang ups were pretty much my least favorite. I did struggle to like her when I was getting her POV and she was overreacting because Damien had turned her down for a one-night stand (indicating he'd like to get to know her better) and she felt rejected. But I did like her sassiness and her personality when she was actually interacting with Damien. So there's that. I'm definitely putting this author on my to read list and hoping she has some better, slightly less neurotic heroines out there.
