When I think of typical K-drama stories, plots like that of Idol Shopping come to mind. Overall the narrative is pretty fun and somewhat cliche/cheesy, but it does do a few shocking things by tossing in rather serious events without giving them much time or depth to be explored in the narrative, such as attempted suicide/self harm.

As with all comic reviews, this looks at the series as a whole (which I believe is 12 volumes long).

Idol Shopping focuses on Kang Song Ih, a high school girl who by day is a typical, plain, unassuming student but who moonlights as S, a super strong, fierce, and righteous girl who takes out bullies--for a price.

She has a rough home life where her parents are your typical sexist assholes who only value sons and, as a result, treat Song Ih like she's dirt no matter how hard she tries to please them. Her gentle and princely twin, Ah Eul, is perhaps the only person in her family who cares for her, so she's fiercely protective of him. A routine bullying-crushing assignment brings Song Ih into contact with two boys who will later form the two legs of the love triangle she finds herself in: Hwang Se Ryun, an idol, and Seo Ga Yun, a young man from an affluent family.

Se Ryun and Song Ih fight, leading to him demanding she pay his medical bills and Ga Yun, attempting to get revenge for his little sister whom S beat up (somewhat), ends up very impressed and intrigued with Song Ih and asks her to be his girlfriend, which she consents to in a rush to leave as a result of a phone call from her mom telling her that her brother attempted suicide. Her brother, not wanting to return to his prestigious all-boys school, remains in the hospital and is somewhat catatonic. The twins' mother is stricken over her son's plight and the fact that he doesn't want to return to school, believing it'll be the end of his successful future (to be honest, the mom seems like she cares more about her son being successful and impressive over his mental health, but I digress). Song Ih, determined to protect her brother's future and find out why he tried to kill himself, sacrifices her own life and identity to take his place (the mother who is awful is all for this plan; only the dad objects, but just mildly so he doesn't actually try to stop her which makes him essentially as bad as the mom).

From here on out, the story is a gender-bender where a girl has a pretend to be a boy and often switch between identities in pursuit of finding out exactly why her brother felt so depressed and unhappy that he wanted to die, all while two hot boys fall for her and vie for her attention and start to grow suspicious that Ah Eul and the mysterious girl they've fallen for are one and the same.

The conflict of the tale, on top of this, mostly centers around the entanglements of relationships between the characters (love interests, romantic rivals, siblings, etc.), since Ga Yun, one of the love interests, is connected with Ah Eul and his suicide attempt and someone from the sidelines, who is connected to Ga Yun, is secretly a viper out to manipulate and destroy for their own selfish desires. There's also things about Ah Eul that Song Ih doesn't know, which further complicates things. Despite a lot of the contrivances, I found myself pretty entertained by the way the story unfolded and I was invested in the plot. The villains were great; there was a variety and you really get a chance to hate them and hope they get their comuppance in the end.

Overall, I liked Song Ih as a character even if I was like "girl, no one in this family deserves you, please LEAVE THEM." She's righteous and fierce and loyal. I also enjoyed Ga Yun and Se Ryun; despite both of them being pretty standard archetypes, it's easy to feel for Ga Yun who, despite being rich and handsome, has a troubled past due to his first girlfriend being possessive and jealous and prone to violence, and Se Ryun, who despite being a snobby idol ends up being pretty noble and committed to Song Ih; you almost want him to get the girl in the end despite Ga Yun being a pretty good love interest, too.

One thing that was different from this manhwa (seeing as it's Korean and was published in the mid-late 2000s) is that Ah Eul was in love with a guy and is, for all intents and purposes, probably gay. While the topic is not necessarily handled all that well and Ah Eul is ultimately somewhat villainized, it's still something of a different twist from a country that's still in 2019 working on being more accepting and open to the idea of same-sex pairings.

But there are some plot issues and the ending is somewhat rushed and near the end things start getting rapid-fire overly dramatic. I think that the "why did Ah Eul try to commit suicide?" plot point was abandoned halfway once Song Ih realized she loved Ga Yun, though they do ultimately explain that Ga Yun didn't intentionally try to hurt Ah Eul or manipulate him and that Ah Eul ultimately decided to use self harm and threats and what not to try to manipulate Ga Yun and that the nurse played a biiiiiiig role in everything bad that happened. Someone else also mentioned "why would Song Ih fall for the guy she thought was the reason her brother tried to die?" but I think the author kind of didn't quite grasp the severity of suicide (it's kind of commonplace in Korea and they tend to not take mental illness in an empathetic way but in a "you're crazy and dangerous" way) and also didn't want that point to get too mucj in the way of Song Ih and Ga Yun's relationship because other obstacles were planned further down the road involving Ah Eul and Ye Rim and what not.

It's not the most well made comic, as with most Hwang Mi Ri titles it was quickly made and the art often suffers for it and there are some issues within the plot, but I found it entertaining anyway and have reread it a few times. The most problematic content is the somewhat dismissive and light treatment of mental illness and what not.

Today I have another work by Hwang Mi-Ri. I know I’m covering too much of her works, but well, it’s fun sometimes, other times I just get mixed up in all of her works. I’ll make a post about this author some time soon, because I found some good stuff to share about her. But let me get back to the story. Whatever you are saying about it, I loved it. I enjoyed it a lot. I mean, I started it at 11 pm, and well, finished it at 6 am. Yep I finished it as soon as started reading it. Okay, not so soon, but I did finish it in a day.

But now let me get back to the review. First of all, I didn’t really get why the title is Idol Shopping, but well, whatever. As always there are many fights, and the girl is a better fighter than the most of the guys. That’s N1 thing in Mi-Ri Hwang’s nearly all series. However, this time the fighting was actually enjoyable, more or less. Song Ih, that’s the female protagonist. Yes, I’m actually writing the names of the characters, though I actually had to look for their names. You see, I actually never have the names when I’m reviewing Korean manhwas. Sorry about that.

As I have already mentioned, I enjoyed it a lot for its romance and relationship development. However, it’s not a light story, there are a lot of themes that no one should ignore. I’ve already read 5 maybe even more of this author’s works and in at least 3 of those the family issue has been stressed a lot. I do not know if it’s still such a problem in Korea, but apparently at the time of writing this story the parent-child relationship was a big problem. It has been stressed in many other author’s works too, that the parents were giving the boy more importance than the girl. Yep, absolute sexism there, and especially when I’m a girl, and I have been an only kid to my mom and her parents, I do not get it, how Song Ih’s parents and grandparent could do that to her. I mean this issue left a big impact on me. They worked their asses to only pay for their son’s tuition and they discarded their daughter as if she was nothing. The last chapters made me explode, were he parent even human? They didn’t even ask where their daughter was!

Another character besides the parents that drove me crazy was A Ul, that’s Song Ih’s twin brother. He never left good impression about him, and when Song Ih finally tells him everything on her mind, I was like: “You finally got it coward?” last issue before I finish up this review of what frustrated me. No, you got it right; there is no normal ending. It absolutely sucks full time! There’s no feeling of completeness, is that a word? Whatever. I need at least a short extra chapter showing Song Ih and Ga Yun together. That way it would be complete.

But do not worry overall this story is amazing. Well, I enjoyed it a lot, and I actually didn’t mistake any characters with other characters. Maybe only a bit. If you want a good humor laced story about a girl who is thrown into an all-boys school, where she has to act as a girlfriend of the person who stole her first kiss, and on top of that has to find out why her brother left school! Yep, it’s one of those stories. But it’s definitely worth reading. Enjoy it to its fullest and don’t forget to share your thought below! Stay tuned for more reviews as well as promos. Don’t miss your next favourite book or manga! Happy reading

XOXO

To be honest, there were parts especially at the beginning that were a little ridiculous and/or overly contrived, but by the end of the series there were some great twists and such and I really enjoyed it.
