Katsuaki Nakamura (中村克明), pen name Katsu Aki (克・亜樹), is a Japanese manga artist best known for his works The Vision of Escaflowne, Futari Ecchi, and Psychic Academy. Mangaka Mine Yoshizaki is one of Aki's former assistants.
One of the worst mangas I've ever read. The plot felt very jerky and not well-transitioned. I know it's just the first book but it did not manage to give the characters any actual character/personality. There were boobs where there really did not have to be boobs. (And I'm not one to really complain about boobs, but man, these characters are teenagers. Blagh. Though I guess this is common in Japanese works.) Also the plot was not even interesting or engaging.
Ai Shiomi attends the prestigious Psychic Academy where his older brother teaches. He faces deep insecurities while he tries to live up to his brother's fame for stopping the Evil Lord. While the premise is interesting, the plot line is underdeveloped - what's the story here? So far, Ai attends school, goes on some mini-adventures, and feels inferior to his older brother. The series quickly and regularly falls into fan service: the girls all have massive boobs, nobody's wearing enough clothing, more boobs, etc. As a straight girl not interested in seeing boobs, there wasn't much for me here; even in frames without boobs, the perverted rabbit keeps things lewd.
Psychic Academy is only a few steps above porn - if you're into that, you'll enjoy this series. Personally, plot matters the most to me, so I will not be continuing this manga.
This series had a great premise. Psychic kids need training so they go to special schools. Unfortunately, there is a lot of fan service. All the girls have giant boobs and short skirts. The main character and his perverted rabbit see way too much action for my taste, but the idea was so good I kept hoping the end would make up for it. The end was good, but not quite enough...
As I continue my discovery of the graphic novel connection, I want to take a minute to be real here. I would not call myself a fan of manga. I like graphic novels and comic books but the backward reading always drove me nuts. Only, not really. What I have learned through the years is that a good story is readable in any format. When I was looking through books I've read in the past decade, there were some manga series that stuck out. I liked R.O.D. and Hellsing, Princess Ai and Monster. I know that it is possible for me to like good stories in this format.
But let's be real here. This is kind of a shit story. It's very... flat. I know that I only read the first volume but there was nothing in that first volume that makes me want to continue. Some of it even actively bothered me.
Like, cool, your two female characters are smoking hot and both into the main character and you have your typical love triangle where one girl has known him forever and the other is edgy and perfect for him or whatever. BUT I do not think that I have ever seen so much accidental boob grabbing in my life. The first time it happened I was surprised enough to send a picture of the frame to my husband with a chuckle. Around the third time it happened I was rolling my eyes. There is a lot of sexy for sales sake going on here, I think. None of the sexiness makes any sense for the story. And, for the love of God, why do their gym suits have nipples??!??
Suffice to say that I won't be continuing this series. In fact, I considered removing it from the collection so that I could replace it with something better but it appears to still check out. This one was not even laughably bad in my opinion, just irritating.
Psychic Academy is a series I only vaguely recall a few friends in high school collecting, and even then, I don't remember having read more than this first volume. I'm not sure why I suddenly remembered it a couple of weeks ago or why that prompted me to buy it, because I remembered this volume being incredibly fanservice-heavy and full of very predictable tropes, the "Chosen One" and "Adjacent to the Chosen One" being the most prominent of those shown, but not even the tip of the iceberg. And while I may not always remember perfectly, in this case it turned out my memory was very accurate to what I've found in revisiting this: lots of stale tropes and an absurd amount of fanboy wet dream fanservice.
I want to keep going for the sake of the story, but given that this series doesn't exactly open on the highest note, I wouldn't be shocked if it's one that I wind up collecting, reading, and being bored enough with that I end up selling it on Mercari afterwards. Really, I'm also only here for Zero and Telda, if we're going to make arguments about caring enough for any of the characters in order to keep pushing through this one. And that probably says a good deal about how low my expectations are, here.
This Sci/Fi-Comedy Manga is off to a great start in this first volume. In the near future, in order to keep the world safe from evil, people with psychic abilities are sent to a special academy for training. Ai Shiomi is sent there against his wishes and his better judgement. He feels his powers are weak, and his brother, who saved the world originally, teaches there. Embarrassing! Especially when big brother keeps hugging him. We meet two possible love interests for Ai. One is a girl he's known all his life, a psychic healer, and the other is a young psychic fighter. We also meet a group of older students who decide to make his life hard. Fun read. It's off to volume Two.
This is an oldie but a goodie. I love manga, but rarely is it in the budget these days to purchase them, they are after all quick reads.
Luckily I found the first seven installments on ebay and I snatched them right up quick. Just as I remember them, the story is fun and light hearted. it focuses on the younger brother, seemingly un special when compared to his older brother Zero, the savior of the world!
As he goes to school in Japan, honing his psychic abilities (if he can even find them) we get to see all the crazy this inspires, and the inevitable love triangle.
Look, reading trashy manga is one of my favorite hobbies. To me, there is nothing better than finding a mid 00's title I've never heard of at a used book store for a few bucks. I really am pleasantly surprised by the quality of this trash. I can't imagine it getting *better* over time, but for the first two volumes, I can't say I'm throwing this immediately back into the donate pile.
DNF. This book is a little too sexual for the content. It seems like it's appealing to the anime neckbeards. Not a fan, which is a shame because it had a good premise.
So my cousin Spencer suggested this series to me, thanks!
The covers are wacky, especially the inconsistent color on this volume. The art is in the classic 90s manga style. It's not my favorite, but I don't hate it, probably because of how well Zero is drawn. He's the best character and the way his hair flops in his face, his super confidence in that ridiculous super hero costume, is what pushes him past Mew for me. I do like Mew as she seems to be comparable to Zero, like a female version. I enjoy her taciturn, loner personality. I like Ai, the main character, and how everyone has an overblown sense of his abilities much to his consternation.
Actually this series has compelling characters and despite its age in a compelling classic. I like the different relationships and abilities.
BOTTOM LINE: Good first volume.
*Note: there is quite a bit of fandom in this manga. (Really large breasts, "squishing" and touching of those breasts by Ai, many breast shots and girls in undress as well as girl on girl breast groping.)
I am extremely picky about manga and I am so happy I can say I loved this one. It has all the usual elements of a love-triangle, but I think the characters are really easy to like. I normally don't like the fluffy side characters, but the Master Boo is hilarious. Outside of reading the story, when I think back on it, I remember it as watching an anime, which is interesting for me. I like to imagine colors on the pages and I guess that means the pictures play through my mind as if I were watching a show. That doesn't always happen with manga or graphic novels with me, but the panels are set up in such a way that everything flows very smoothly. You can see the movement and the vivid colors without them even being there.
I have the second volume to this. I will probably start it tonight. I have a feeling that I'm going to get addicted to this one,... and I think I will go with it. :D
Ah, yes, a manga back from my novice days, back before I had ever heard the term "ecchi." I naively picked the series up on the premise alone, trusting it was just a story about kids with psychic powers. Man, was my fresh out of middle school self surprised at all the ecchi scenes!
My original review, back from 2011:
"Weird manga . . . it's kind of confusing and very obviously written by a guy. :("
My kind little self read this whole series and gave it three stars, which I'll keep for old time's sake. Honestly, based on my memory, it deserves less.
♡♡♡ I'm already in love with this series, and this was just the first volume. I can't wait to read more. So very cute. I loved the characters, especially Ai and Orina. And Zero was freaking hilarious, as was Master Boo. Gotta love it when a manga has nothing but interesting characters. But wow, so much fan service. Soooooooo much fan service. Love it anyway, though. ♡♡♡
I've had these books since I was a pre-teen and I think they suited me more then. The art drives me mad - what's with all the hair and the clothing folds? Gah. The story is okay. Lots of romance and pining. Fanservice. Love triangles. There's a bit of action. I don't wanna do it a disservice, but it's a lot harder to read now that I've grown up.
I loved reading this as I haven't read a manga in a while and I do love the fluidity of them. Didn't have any expectations when I started... The fantasy plot caught my eye but the bit of fan serving put me a little on guard as I don't usually like fan service only manga. So I'd had to wait to read more and see what was the genre of it.
It was really funny and good. First off, it at times was STEAMY. Not just a little but a lot. For example, the girl in the bathtub..her boobs showing, not other privates though.
