Brian and Tristan, architect and cop, are still feeling their way toward a serious relationship. Tristan, a bit of a renegade from his upper-class moneyed family, avoids the party circuit as much as possible. To please Brian, he agrees to go to an exclusive up-scale New Year’s Eve party. Unfortunately, Tristan’s narcissistic ex-boyfriend, Eric, attends the same party. Ex-lovers really can be trouble!
As noted above, this is #7 in the Inches of Trust series (which are soon approaching porn star proportion on the ruler). I’m a bit torn by this. I love both characters a lot, I love where this is going, but I swear the author must have heard me scream when yet again the short came to an end with no satisfying conclusion. It is also a very slow-moving series as they met at Halloween (last year) but it is now only NYE. In their world two months have passed, in mine fourteen.
However, despite my misgivings about how many inches this is going to run, I really like this author’s style and I really like these two characters. I appreciate that each short sees cop Tristan moving closer and closer to fully trusting and accepting Brian in his life. I like that Brian is patient and determined to prove that he’s not going to bail at the first sign of trouble as well. Tristan has now given Brian the key to his house and agrees to go to the fancy NYE party that he hates, to please more socially outgoing Brian. Both big concessions.
Of course running into his jerk of an ex was not part of the plan and the ex makes sure to cause as much mayhem as he can, even going so far as to assault Brian. In this case, I loved that Brian told Tristan what happened, usually they try to “deal with it because they’re a guy” and don’t need any help. And he didn’t need help, but he didn’t keep it a secret either. Sharing that incident brought them yet closer together and then …. the end. Arrgghhhhh.
So for those of us who started following this way back when it was a Halloween short and they were getting it on in the garden shed, it’s probably a must read, however I long for the day when Brian and Tristan’s story can be put all in one book, smoothed out and I can enjoy it in one fell swoop rather than waiting not-so-patiently for the next installment. While this could be read as a stand-alone, I think a large portion of the relationship building would be lost to people who haven’t followed the series.
This is one of my favorites of the overall series. I just love Brian and Tristan and their witty banter, bad puns, and getting to see how their relationship has progressed over the course of this short story series. I do wish they were longer with some more major steps taken in their relationship, and look forward to more I hope!
