Guantanamo: If the Light Goes Out

Rate this book
For eight years Guantanamo has been home to hundreds of men, all Muslim, all detained in the aftermath of 9/11. Held in legal limbo for years and repeatedly interrogated, almost all have now been released without charge―very few have been tried in court. Guantanamo illustrates three experiences of at Guantanamo naval base, home to the American community; in the camp complex where the detainees have been held; and in the homes where former detainees, never charged with any crime, find themselves trying to rebuild lives. These notions of home are brought together in an unsettling visual narrative. Winner for Best Photographic Book at 2011 New York Photo Awards

Photographer Edmund Clark presents a remarkable photo essay of 'home' at Guantanamo and Omar Deghayes 'home' in Britain. Also containing a sampling of the letters of support Deghayes received from around the world, Clark's juxtapositions of the prison camp and the suburban British home tell a truly human story of an inhuman situation. Clark specializes in the subject of control and incarceration. This book is an important contribution to the understanding of the War on Terror.
