4 Stars!! Unique and creative spin on a zombie romance!!
Drake Parrish is not quite a zombie. Cursed by a Voodoo priestess in retaliation for breaking her granddaughter’s heart, or so he’s led to believe, he morphs into a partial zombie; his skin changes, his heartbeat stops, and then he switches back to his normal human state after a couple hours, a few days a week. While he’s not a full blown meat-muncher, his zombie looks are enough to send anyone screaming. Eight years of this agony and no hope of breaking the curse, has Drake living like a hermit, locked away in his Manhattan apartment, until he crosses paths with romance author, Simone Kent.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this book, it was loads of fun. I felt for Drake as he tried to work around his predicament, having a normal life again, or as normal as he could considering his dilemma. His best and only friend, Beck, encourages him to pursue a relationship with Simone. Initially I was not a fan of Simone. Her constant use of the word ‘pussy’ had me wondering if I missed reading somewhere that she had a cat!! No, she was referring to herself and her constant state of arousal. It got old after a while. Her first sexual encounter with Drake was undoubtedly scorching hot; he was scrumptious, and laid down some heavy lovin’ on her. However, it seemed to go on and on, and I started to skim. I was beginning to wonder if the sex-capades were going to take over the unique nature of the read. I wanted more of that fun and sweet that was in the beginning of the book, and thankfully the sex-fest was just a bump in the road and it shifted away from the bedroom antics and back to the zombie fun. The excitement kicks in again as the Voodoo priestess resurfaces and Drake and Simone find themselves on the run.
There was something for everyone in this book; a scrumptious hero, a brave understanding heroine, who eventually won me over, passionate sex; the author definitely knows how to steam up the pages, witty dialogue, some laugh out loud moments, and a surprise twist at the end. There are also some great secondary characters! Beck was fantastic, he was funny and a good friend to Drake, I would love to see him featured in a book. This was an amusing, exciting, sweet unique read!! Despite a few issues, I found myself totally engaged and would recommend this to readers who love zombies, romance and sexy good times!
