You're seventeen, and studying hard for your A levels. How would you like it if you were suddenly adopted by a Great Being, who had been around for ever and knew everything? 'Pretty useful, with all that knowledge and the exams coming up', would be your first reaction, I expect. But then the Great Being lets slip that the end of the world is just around the corner, and that you have a key role to play in saving mankind. I mean, right in the middle of studying, choosing a future career and writing that Personal Statement for university. Don't Great Beings have any sense of priority? Just as well Antonia Collins wasn't like you then. There are some people who are up for any challenge thrown in front of them, and she was one of them.
Is this a book for everyone? I'm not sure. I tried to put a lot into it.
This book is a fantasy tale. Ogg, a supernatural Great Being, tries to teach young Antonia Collins how to think logically as together they try to save the world from destruction. But it’s also a tale of reason versus emotion. Antonia struggles to balance her logical thought processes and her feelings about her family, friends and the eccentric Peregrine Pratt and the confused sensations of a nascent first love don’t make it any easier. It’s a philosophical enquiry too: who or what is OGG exactly and why does he act in mysterious ways?
Sounds heavy, but you are guaranteed a warm feeling and a lot of smiles.
A cleverly written and amusing story about a 'Great Being', the eponymous Ogg, and his team of young questioning humans and their endeavours to save the future. On the way they fail to answer a number of "GPQ"s that is "Great Philosophical Questions" play computer games and travel backwards and forwards in time. Meanwhile Antonia (Ant) finds some time to revise for her exams, get a (temporary) sun tan and meet a young mans parents. Difficult to pigeon hole this one ... A Philosophical Romantic Comedy?.
