I've been an avid reader since the fifth grade. As I aged I read everything I could get my hands on from horror, to mystery and finally stopping in romance.
While in college studying computer programming and electrical engineering, I realized what I wanted to do when I grew up. I wanted to write those stories that entertained me through more nights than I could count. Of course my first attempts were less than remarkable and have been destroyed to protect the innocent. :) As the years have progressed life kind of took over. I got married, had a son, changed jobs several times. But one thing remained constant -- my desire to write.
Currently, I work a normal 9 to 5 in the IT world. I write during my lunch hour and at home after 9pm when everyone in my house is asleep. Is it easy?... Yes -- and No! Coming up with the stories is easy. Getting the words out of my head and onto paper is HARD! But I couldn't live without it!
Though werewolf stories are not one of my kinks, the idea of a damaged alpha intrigued me enough to give this one a go. I love damaged heroes, and this seemed to promise one in spades. However, this never got off the ground for me. The prose is simplistic and in places, redundant, and the characters lack any sort of nuance to get me interested in them. Gio's anger borders on shrill and obnoxious (though I liked that she kicked Jason's ex's ass), and the world underdeveloped.
The killer for me, though, came a third into the story when the focus turns to Gio having sex as much and as often as possible to control the heat she's in. Not my favorite trope, but it's made worse by the fact that Jason's come literally cools the fire in her. Not her orgasm, not the act of sex itself, not anything slightly emotional or psychological to give the cliche any kind of depth. His come. And he won't let her get up immediately afterward because, "If you stand up, my cum will leak out, and the heat will return." I probably should've stopped reading at this point because I was laughing so hard at how ridiculous that was, but I kept hoping it would improve. It didn't.

I’ve been hunting for a unique, enjoyable paranormal read for a while, so when my Kindle suggested this story, I was instantly intrigued. As I read the blurb, I thought “Well, I’ve never seen this before” and purchased. I’ve never been so happy with a purchase before.
Solstice Heat is worth every penny spent. First off, this story is about a former pack alpha, who gave up his position because he lost the full use of one leg, and has very limited use in the other. Jason sees himself as half a man, and definitely one third of a shifter. As their community prizes strength and no weakness, having such a debilitating injury makes him a bit of an outcast. He still has shifters loyal to him, but the females all avoid him due to his alpha-female ex, and makes for a very lonely life. Jason takes matters into his own hands and goes online, looking for a ‘submissive’ partner that could help ease the loneliness by being his mate.
Giovanni is that partner. Now, “Gio” thinks Jason is a first class pervert. She finds secret emails between Jason and her younger sister, and Gio is determined to meet with him, as her sister agreed, and kick some sense in the old pervert. She arrives to find him in a wheelchair, with two other men waiting. Thinking they’ve planned some disgusting ‘gang-bang’ with her precious little sister, Gio lets him have it.
When Gio arrives at Jason’s doorstep, he’s expecting her, but he isn’t expecting her dominance. He’s expecting a very submissive female, and as he’s backed into a corner, literally, and threatened by this woman, his beast emerges and demands her submission.
From there on out, the story is nothing short of hilarious and action-packed. Gio is one of those heroines you cheer for. She’s doesn’t hold her tongue for anything, and even gives Jason a piece of her mind concerning his position in the pack. Jason, similarly, is a very sympathetic character. When we meet him, it’s obvious he thinks of himself as less of a man, but with Gio there to talk or yell some reason into him, it isn’t long before he begins believing in himself once more.
Leila Brown wrote an exceptional paranormal romance with this story, and I highly recommend it to those looking for a unique werewolf story. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer.
I found Solstice Heat as an advert on the new aRe Cafe, and I was intrigued, especially since this follows on the heels of the Romance Club discussion on how very white white white the paranormal world is in Romancelandia. I love PNR, but the limited POCs kind of detracts from the thing that I like about PNR, which is that it’s our world, with a bit of magic. No POCs kind of zaps out the “this is the world we live, and you can just see out of the corner of your eye” kind of feel that a good PNR has, so I was very happy to find this book.
The book has an intriging premise: what if an Alpha male didn’t heal from his injuries? Jason, the hero, is an Alpha who had to step down from his duties because of a spinal injury. He uses a wheelchair, and Gio comes into his life via a flirtation with a woman online. Gio, the heroine, is her older sister, and when she finds out about the shenanigans, confronts him about flirting with her sister.
Gio brings out his inner wolf, and he shifts for the first time since his accident, bites and claims her. There is a lot of sexy sexing, for this is a Loose-Id title. *G*
The new Alpha wants to get rid of Jason, because apparently much of the pack would still rather have him as Alpha, and they embrace Gio as a sign that he may return to his old position. Pack politics ensue, and Gio proves herself a worthy Alpha, and helps Jason reconcile his Alpha nature with his new body.
I really enjoyed this story, and my only complaint about it is that there were a few loose threads at the end - Gio’s sister is one, and a nasty pack female is another. Ms. Brown has the bones of a great longer version if she were ever so inclined - I’d love to read more about Gio’s past and how it made her the Alpha that she is today. I will peruse more of Leila Brown’s backlist, because I’d like to see what she does with a longer format. I give Solstice Heat a solid B, for a hot, sweet short.
*I will put this with the caveat of this is a high-sensuality title, and remark that it does not shy away from violence. Ms. Brown’s werewolves are not sweet and cuddly. However, the violence isn't any more extreme than in Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series.
The hero, Jason, is your typical brooding Alpha male except for one minor detail: he is in a wheelchair. He lost his legs saving the life of his best friend and Beta, Donovan two years prior to the beginning of the story. However, despite his noble actions, Jason gives up the position of pack Alpha and decides to live peacefully away from the dangers that come with the title. This includes finding a mate who will not only accept him for being a shapeshifter, but is agreeable to caring for him for the rest of their natural lives.
Enter, Giovanni (I love, love , love this name). Our heroine is concerned about the direction her sister's relationship with Alex is going in after she stumbles across some risque emails exchanged between the two of them. She decides to confront Jason and takes her sister's place on the trip Jason sets up for them to meet.
Overall, I loved Gio and Jason's push-pull relationship. One thing is for sure: She is no wilting violet; making her the perfect mate for our Alpha hero. At the point of her arrival, he is allowing his disability to define him as a person. And she immediately puts a stop to the self-loathing. She makes it plain that she wants him to see himself for the man that he really is and not for his limitations. Their relationship blossoms within a short time, but considering their circumstances, that is understandable.
Chaos, pack drama and a whole lot of kink ensues, which makes a definitely interesting read.
this would be my third novel of top ten novel i like three out ten, anyway i like gio she a strong no sense type of woman,to let you know who running the show, but either is her man jason despite he try be deceitful about them.
It was interesting to read a story featuring an Alpha Male that had a disability. Loved the female Alpha, who although had some self esteem issues, did not back down from any challenges. The book was not a long one and I need to know more about this pack.
I'm afraid this story just didn't work at all for me. It was short, I didn't get the attraction, and the way the plot and how the werewolf clan worked was a simplistic attempt to force you accept the relationship even though it based on nothing tangible at all. Very basic and forced story telling.
I liked the female character, I'm a big fan of stories with strong family ties. Without going too deep, the character growth of the main characters was well done. All in all an enjoyable read.
