In 2007, at the age of thirty-four, Mike Tomlin was hired as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The youngest coach to win a Super Bowl in only his second season at the helm, Tomlin has yet to have a losing record in sixteen seasons with the team. He is also the second-most tenured head coach in the league, only behind Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots.
But the question still unanswered is, who is Mike Tomlin? Known for giving little to the media and keeping his thoughts and opinions private, those outside the locker room and Steelers offices know little about the future Hall of Fame coach. Even as one of the most successful African American head coaches in NFL history, and one that has handled numerous locker room “personalities” over the years, much of what is written and reported about the coach is only above the surface. I thought this book had the potential for Best Sports Book of the Year. Safe to say, it was not. I always admire and appreciate the work it takes for an author to write a 416-page book. However, this read like a Wikipedia year by year review of Mike Tomlin's career starting in 1998 and ending in 2023 when the book was published. I learned nothing new about Antonio Brown or Le'Veon Bell or Ben Roethlisberger that I didn't already know. It felt more like a 20-year recap of the Steelers than a book about Mike Tomlin. I also noticed many sloppy mistakes, such as Danell (Darnell) Washington, Andy Reid coaching the Kansas Chiefs, and "so evidence" of racism by Myles Garrett (when the word should be no and you write so, it really changes the sentence). I also could have lived without the many claims that Mike Tomlin is underrated and underappreciated because he is black.
