Daoma Winston was a prolific writer of Gothic romance and horror/thriller novels. All of her novels have a strong occult theme and usually feature ghosts, witches, demons or magic. (Not "Golden Tramp.")
This was one of Daoma Winston's more unsettling books. There were hints of a 14-year-old girl named Merrill having incestuous feelings towards her older brother, who in turn was having disturbing feelings for his much older neighbor.
The story was going fairly good until Daoma became extremely focused on Merrill's body and her burgeoning womanhood. All of a sudden it was like I was reading Lolita when she began rubbing up against the husband of the much older neighbor.
There was constant dialogue about Merrill's breasts and at one point she was even squeezing them. I quickly became disgusted and was pretty surprised that a gothic from 1966 was going that far.
Lola and Ryan were the much older neighbors, and I didn't care for either one of them. I thought Ryan was pathetic and nasty and Lola was worse than that.
An interesting read, punching above its weight. I was thinking 3.5 to 4 stars. I try to balance all my reviews within a year and this was better than all my 3 star books but not quite up to most of my 4s, so I went with 3.
