Embark on a fascinating journey of self-discovery with Judy Balan’s Why Am I Like This? Equal parts astrology, Jungian psychology, mythology and memoir - if you’ve ever wished you came with an instruction manual, this thoughtful, in-depth beginner's guide to psychological astrology is just the book for you.
Author of Two Fates: The Story of My Divorce, Sophie Says: Memoirs of a Breakup Coach, How to Stop Your Grownup From Making Bad Decisions (Nina the Philosopher #1), Tweenache in the Time of Hashtags (Nina the Philosopher #2) and Half Boyfriend.
This book is nonfiction and is based on the author's real-life events. Judy Balan is a consulting psychological astrologer with a post-graduate diploma in Jungian studies. She is also an established writer who has published six novels, including 'Two Fates: the story of my divorce'.
The book starts with the author's struggle with self-doubts and internal conflicts and her experience as a child with a well-settled life. Though she had everything in her life, she always found something was amiss, and she was searching for the missing piece, which she later found in her Jungian astrology journey.
This book for me was very fascinating and exciting because the topic and details were very new to me, and it was quite an exploration. Though I don't believe or follow the practices in real life, reading them and about someone's experience with the same felt very lively. The author's parapsychic experiences were spine-chilling, and her explanations were well fitting. She explains each aspect of astrology, Jungian science, the natal chart, mysticism and the reality of the unconscious. The author's way of dealing with her life experiences with wit and humour was enjoyable.
Some aspects may not come to our understanding easily, but it takes a few retreads to achieve the same. The writing is so natural and easy, making the book's complex terminologies and aspects seem like a cakewalk. If you are interested in astrology and willing to learn or explore more, this book will serve you right.
Why Am I Like This? starts with the author's life experiences from childhood until she decides to pursue Jungian psychology actively, a field that offered an explanation for her unusual and parapsychic experiences, her 'disproportionate reaction' to situations and anything that defied her sense of self.
What is it that makes you act contradictory to your nature, your 'ego' (not self-importance here) that you describe as 'I'? More often than not, you may find the answer through the lens of Jungian psychology that holds up a mirror to your life, revealing a fascinating world of astrology as complicated as your life but making the unconscious part visible through archetypes, complexes, myths and more.
This finely structured book offers you a view into everything that you need to understand your Natal Chart (the map of your psyche)—what are complexes, projections, symptoms, planets, signs, elements, houses, aspects, their significance and how they may be playing out in your life. The book was a portal that transported me to a mesmerising world of new possibilities and limitless stories.
Absolutely fantastic read! Kobe does a phenomenal job addressing trauma and biblical identity in multicultural environments. Such an encouraging book. Highly recommend
