A superb introduction to the British ghost story. Many rare treasures here, quite a number of the authors represented here would only become more familiar to lovers of the outre and ghostly - - years later when Ash Tree, Ghost Story, Tartarus and the other brilliant presses would appear and revive these ghostly gems.

Like all anthologies, this book is a mixed bag, but the hit to miss ratio here is pretty good. There are some excellent stories here and only a few that missed the mark for me. My only real complaint is Sullivan's needlessly complicated definition of a ghost story. It's really quite simple: if the story has a ghost in it, then it's a ghost story. If it doesn't, it isn't. And about half of the stories here don't. But if you like obscure horror stories, you ought to love this book -- if you can find it.
